I forgot to mention that the place where Mr. Palma was born, Esperenza Base, continues to operate in a manner suited to back up the Argentine claims to the land. (Coincidentally, Palma's father was the commander of the base when Emilio was born.)

They have settled families there and even built schools for the children so that they can claim that is just a normal permanently inhabited settlement. The families live there in 6 month shifts, and I can only imagine that this must be some sort of punishment for political prisoners akin to that chapter in Lolita where Humbert Humbert is forced to work in some sort of miserable arctic scientific expedition for a year, but for all intents and purposes, it is just a normal place where normal Argentines live of their own volition, and hence a normal part of Argentina, right?

Right.

11th June 2009. Libyan Leader el-Qaddafi arrived in Rome Airport for his first visit to Europe in decades. He was greeted by the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlousconi. Pinned to Gaddafi’s uniform was a faded, black-and-white photo of a Libyan who fought against Italy’s colonial rule. In what the New York Times called, “one of the least notable colonial histories in Europe,” Italy ruled Libya from 1911 to 1943. Resistance Leader of Mnifa Tribe, Omar al-Mukhtar, so-called “Lion of the Desert” was arrested, chained (in the historic photo) and hung by the Italian captors in 1931.

That kind of depends what we're talking about. There are some major shifts that occurred in Islam during the transition to modernism but the orthodox theological proscription on the depiction of Mohammed has been fairly consistent. But in practice, these drawings for example are from private manuscripts and the like that were commissioned and held by the nobility and literary class who were known for challenging various orthodox positions like the proscription against figurative art; the educated Arab/Persian class was full of winedrinkers and homosexuals for example (according to al-Tifashi, most of them). The major exception are some public Shi'a curiosities.

I think there are much more challenging Muslim paintings that are somewhat obscure. Like this one, Zeynep by late 19th century Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey, a secular challenge to the Caliphate. I can't find a hi-res version so I have to kind of explain it: a provocatively dressed and unveiled woman is seated on a Quran, with Qurans scattered under her feet. Behind her is the mihrab, the marking towards Mecca, placing a woman between the "praying" male and Mecca (forbidden in orthodox Islam).

If you go to Istanbul you can actually find quite a lot of art depicting Mohammed. The Palace museum had an entire exhibit dedicated to the Prophet and things relating to him, including depictions and pieces of hair and things like that.

Soldiers marching around the Palace grounds, when I was there they had far more modern uniforms so I guess this is an old picture. They were pretty friendly fellas, allowing tourists to pose with them and everything.

That is some quality workmanship around the borders there. I love the faux US style medals. On a real US uniform, up close you can see that they are actually individual medals, for specific awards. Meanwhile, his is just one piece. Can somebody chime in and tell us if it's copied off of actual medals, or is it just made up nonsense? I'm thinking it might be based on a picture of some high-ranking US general.

Clearly Gaddafi just glued together his hard-earned Libyan awards and covered them in Velcro, because reassembling all that poo poo every time you change your pimping robe takes way too much time.

I'm willing to bet that a portion of them are made up and some are actual medals he earned from his time in service. Maybe if Qaddafi had this guy he wouldn't have been butt stabbed to death.

The ravenous, mouth-frothing, shrieking hatred right-wingers have for Susan Fluke never ceases to amuse and frighten. Lady had the unmitigated gall to, um, suggest to officials that perhaps birth control should be affordable, and that automatically makes her a savage harpy slutbeast.

These people have a strange tendency to revert to 12-year-old boys on these things.

It irks me when Right Wingers try to frame their hatred of birth control as anything other than the attitude of how dare women have agency over their sex life. The attacks of Fluke pretty much showed their hand that they don't give one poo poo about preventing abortions (especially since the intent of birth control pills isn't to cause them) but only about slut shaming. Additionally the idea that they are just SO concerned with insurance companies paying for birth control pills and raising their premiums is hilarious when medical care for mothers and children is factored in.

It's 100% hatred of women and the parade of ugly caricatures of a private citizen highlights it perfectly.

Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.

To say nothing of the common conflation that the more sex a woman has the more hormonal birth control she needs. :psyduck:

Of course he realizes that. But Gaddafi is literally wearing copies of American ribbons. He's actually wearing a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (which is an award you get every three years, automatically, for basically not getting in trouble), he's also wearing a Coast Guard Achievement Medal (when I say medals, I'm referring to the awards, he's actually wearing the ribbon version of the medal). I can identify at least 75% of his rack as being copies of American ribbons/medals.

The reason for that sculpture's placement there isn't intended to be anything related to what you're presumably thinking. I agree it's poignant, none the less.

http://arts.mit.edu/arts-blog/cai-dedication/

quote:

CAI GUO-QIANG’S SCULPTURE RING STONE

Ring Stone is composed of twelve individual but indivisible links cut from a 39 1/2-foot-long single block of white granite weighing approximately 14 metric tons. The massive stone block was quarried from the caves of Zhangbanzhen, Hui An County, near the artist’s hometown of Quanzhou in southern China’s Fujian Province, which also is where artisan stonemasons carved the work. Seven graceful Japanese Black Pine trees, reminiscent of images found in traditional Chinese landscape painting, are planted inside the rings and nearby. The interlocking, inseparable granite links of Ring Stone form a chain, representing the individual’s relationship to society. The rings are simultaneously symbolic of both wholeness and emptiness. The twelve inextricably linked rings also refer to the twelve months in the Chinese lunar calendar as well as the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. The pine trees, which retain their green foliage even in a severe winter, represent longevity and endurance in the face of adversity. While the stone timelessly grounds the work, the seven pines will slowly grow over time and change with each season.

Cai has placed Ring Stone in its location on the Sloan School lawn according to the exacting principles of feng shui, the Chinese understanding of how qi (energy) flows throughout the universe. Based on the concept that man and nature must exist in harmony, the artist has studied this complex belief system extensively, which has been practiced in China since 1100 BCE. In siting Ring Stone, Cai has used feng shui to bestow beneficial qi on the Sloan School by blocking the inauspicious energy created by traffic converging from Broadway and Main Street.

This makes zero sense. Before I knew her politics I had the hugest crush on Garofalo. Sonia Sotomayer is 58 and looks amazing for her age. Same goes for Pelosi and Hilary. Doing a relatively quick average in my head there's about a 20 year difference between who they chose for one side and the other. And Michelle Obama? REALLY?

None of that matters because all these women are either state leaders, journalists, or comedians and judging them on their attractiveness is sexist and has nothing to do with their performance at their jobs or their value as a person, but even based on their own criteria and sick mentality I still don't get how Garofalo or Obama are even considered for a list of "Ugly liberals".
