I worked in a call center dealing with welfare cases and heard many names over the years that were quite clearly made up or off the wall. The things that the uneducated will name their children frighten me. Those 2 in particular stood out in my mind over the years because the people that gave them to me felt the need to explain why they chose those names. I'm sorry that you think I am being dishonest and thus have removed the post.

If anyone's going to name their kid Abcde, it's going to be some obnoxious hipster who does it just so he can smugly correct someone who says it's just an urban legend.

I started reading this forum before 1/13/13 and did not think to reread the 1st post. I did not mention any ethnicity in my post if you choose to make it racist that is your choice. However, the people in question were of french descent, as am I. Not African as I believe you are eluding to. If you just Google Abcde you will find that it is listed on baby name websites and many articles have been written on the name.

It's been mentioned at least half a dozen times already in this thread anyway so real or fake it's time to move on to other names. Just remembered my little cousin's name. They had one son, named him Finn, pretty popular and normal. Then they had a daughter a couple years ago and decided out of the blue to name her Circe. Like for the Greek legendary enchantress who had a lot of sex with Odysseus' men and then turned them into pigs. That poor girl is growing up in rural Canada with a name like "Circe".

I grew up with a guy that was named "Jerry Felcker", he didn't like that name and decided that "Palmer Cranfield" was a upgrade. He legally changed his name and becomes very angry if someone that has known him for years accidentally calls him Jerry.

Needless to say there was a Parth. No excuse for Jinely though, that's rough.

Had to proofread comments for a Grade Three report card the other day. Fortunately most "English"names in Hong Kong aren't officially registered so I can use their real name if it annoys me, but: Whammie (a girl) Bosco (so loving common here, is there any other meaning besides the chocolate or Irish puppet?) Unique (she acted it) T. Rex The icing on the cake was a boy named Xenos. You literally named your boy after the Greek term for unwanted stranger? Have a drat abortion then. Oh and last year I had some nice students named Rex and Regina. For the first month I couldn't figure out why the class laughed when I called her name until I found out I wasn't supposed to use the Canadian pronunciation.

To be honest, I lived in Canada for five years and still giggle like a child whenever anyone says "Regina." (as it's pronounced for the city in Saskatchewan. Is that how people say it as a name, too?)

A girl who posted on a class message board in my undergrad was named Typhani... As in Tiffany. I also know children with the following names Finbar, Napoleon, and Hannibal. If my sister had a girl she wanted to name it Sida (pronounced Sitta) but spelled the same as the French acronym for AIDS. Living in Canada that would likely have been a poor choice.

Coincidentally, she was a lesbian. And awesome.

Apparently it's a not exactly common but not exactly rare last name. It was also the first name of B.A. Baracus from the A-Team. He said it stood for "bad attitude" but it stood for Bosco and some middle name that I don't remember. It's...kind of sad that I know that. Either way, there are worse names to have. Bosko was also one of the first cartoon characters. He started in the 1920's. He would be considered very racially offensive if he was created these days.
