So if anyone else missed Yeah Yeah Yeahs live stream of their new album Mosquito or, like me, didn't know it was happening, here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpGtkz-449U I am only 2 songs in, but I have like them both so far!

Cotton Flower is an amazing song! So haunting, I love it. I can't say I've listened to much else by them but I will now. EDIT: Sorry, this was about Future Islands.

People Get Ready have the same name as a famous song, which makes them somewhat annoying to search for, but I'll forgive them for that. Lots of percussioning. Shame there was a small turnout, but I guess that's partly because they only announced the concert a week ago.

The new Caveman self titled album came out this week and is now on Spotify. For those not familiar with them, they have a very dreamy, mellow psych sound with Brian Wilson harmonies thrown in. Their show at Crossing Brooklyn Ferry last May is still one of my favorites of all time so definitely go see them if you have the opportunity.

I am constantly surprised by how few people are familiar with Vic Chesnutt, who died at the end of 2009 at 45. Just watch this all the way through: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rPyQFmGmb4 That was recorded about a month before he committed suicide. I'd recommend starting with two of his last albums, "At The Cut" and "North Star Deserter", both of which where recorded with Guy Piciotto from Fugazi, and members of Godspeed/Silver Mt Zion (Efrim Menuck, Jessica Moss, Thierry Amar etc) as his band. "Coward" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNJKL_6MwT0 "Flirted With You All My Life" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4Z-kjr4BLs His last live performance is available from the Live Music Archive: http://archive.org/details/vc2009-12-05.akg483.flac16

I had never heard of them until I read your post, so thank you. Next time you hear of them being in Birmingham, please send me a PM. I am sure my wife and I could drive down from Huntsville for a show. Hell, might even make a nice night to tag up and be stupid.

NPR has a First Listen of the new Iron and Wine album up. It sounds like an extension of their sound from Kiss Each Other Clean, so if you liked that you'll enjoy this. They also have the new Flaming Lips album.

That's disappointing. I find that some artists can go from lo-fi folk to a more full and lush folk-rock successfully (for my money, Jason Molina in his Songs:Ohia to Magnolia Electric Co. is the best example of that) but I don't really dig his new sound s much.

FactsAreUseless posted:I don't think that either of these albums stand up to Shepherd's Dog, but the closing track of Kiss Each Other Clean is still the best thing he's ever recorded. Heck I don't think any of these three albums stand up to The Creek that Drank the Needle, and certainly not Our Endless Numbered Days. I would personally put them in that order: OEND > CTDTN > Woman King EP > Around the Well > Sea & the Rhythm EP >>> In the Reins >>>>>> Shepherd Dog > KEOC > GOG If I hadn't been following him since CTDTN my opinion wouHld probably be different, but at the end of the day I find his old sound much better (and richer) than with a full band. Heck, I would rather listen to the unofficial 'Unknown Early Session' than material from 'In the Reins' until now

I think it's just a very different sound, because I don't really like any of his pre-Shepherd's Dog stuff except for a few bits of Woman King. I think Shepherd's Dog is his strongest album because of its diversity of styles and the much-needed addition of a rhythm section.

Kiss Each Other Clean is my favorite from him, but I haven't listened to the new stream yet. I forget which album was the first one, but whichever it is I find it incredibly loving boring. The lo-fi does it no favors either, but then I don't like lo-fi 9 times out of 10. EDIT: Also, I saw him with a full like 12 piece band in 2011 and it was amazing hearing not only the stuff from KEOC but older songs reworked for a full band setting. Holy poo poo was that a good show. Epi Lepi fucked around with this message at 05:17 on Apr 9, 2013 |

There's a new Small Sur album coming out in June (I believe). I've liked all of their previous work and am probably going to enjoy this new album. I don't really know how to describe it...Chill country folk maybe? Anyways, listen to some songs off of their upcoming album. I think it will be quite enjoyable. https://soundcloud.com/smallsur/sets/labor

Rageaholic Monkey posted:Oh man, I didn't know what happened to them but I figured they had broken up or gone on hiatus or something. The only album of theirs I have is Like Vines, but I really dig it. I didn't hear anything about them after a while. I didn't even know they'd released an album in '08. I saw them in Philly a couple months ago. I too was happy to see them reunite. Thry were honestly really bad live. Greta didn't put much effort into the performance, Bob kind of went off into his own world and wailed away into a tiny Valve Jr (which looked ridiculous next to an Ampeg 810), and Chris looked high as a kite. Their timing was sloppy, the live mix blew, and they played everything at 120% album tempo. Combined with the fact that there was no audience participation they seemed like they wanted to cash in and go home. They'll be back next month, so we'll see. Like Vines was a high school staple. Check out So Sudden; it's their debut album. It flies under the radar but I think it's more substantial than Like Vines or Goodbye Blues. There is some amazing songwriting on there, especially considering they were 14-18 at the time.

If you cut Fly Trapped In A Jar, Education, Steam Engenius, and Little Motel, and then put King Rat in their place, you get a much tighter and more listenable album. Modest Mouse always have too many songs on their albums.

My friend and I were stumbling home drunk after the Ghostface Killah show in Seattle last week and he wanted to show me this tiny bar called Electric Tea Garden. We had no idea who they were at the time but Religious Girls were playing that night. I was incredibly impressed by their energy live. It reminded me of some of the more raucous parts of Animal Collective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ8dyuvEhzQ

Outside of Dashboard I think it's the first half of the album that's worn out it's welcome the most for me. I generally like the Shins but James Mercer has the kind of voice that I need to be in the mood for so all of his guest vocals on that half put me off.

So Yuck's beginning recording on their second album soon which is cool. What's not cool is they're doing it without their frontman Daniel Blumberg, begging the question of whether it'll be worth listening to and whether they'll keep old songs in their live act. http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/04/yuck-announces-departure-of-frontman-daniel-blumberg/ Anyone listened to his solo project Oupa?
