Naw, the investigation was helped greatly when authorities could delegate racism to Reddit and 4chan.

The police were reading off the name "Mulugeta" on the scanner and I think they said "M as in Mike," not that his/her name actually was Mike. Mulugeta is an Ethiopian last name, and since the pictures were two white dudes I did not expect it to be him. Chances are that someone named Mulugeta was stopped/arrested that day, probably for some kind of crime scene thing.

It's lovely media's fault. While reddit is dumb as hell, desperate reporters could have skimmed the SA thread for inaccurate accusatory pictures just as easily.

To get horrible unsourced social media witch hunt pictures off SA involves finding the correct thread and digging through it page by page until you find something.

Yeah I think the main distinction between the two was that SA people were scanning the pictures and talking about them for their own amusement whereas reddit was actively seeking out and contacting authorities with their every lead.

Chicken-and-egg, maybe, but law enforcement was looking that guys on the Post front page as POI, internally. Maybe they were found by the FBI/BPD because of Reddit, or they found them independently. Word leaked to the press that those two needed to be identified, and the Post and at least one local TV station in Houston ran with it and published/broadcast the pictures.

Same with during the actual manhunt. Like I was listening to the scanner and reading the thread and following along on Google Maps all and . And while it was crazy how far behind the actual tv news was, I was glad that 99% of what we heard never got out because it was all false alarms. How many times did we hear "THEY GOT HIM" in the thread and it was nothing? Packages and open doors that never checked out, major SWATS that were fruitless, pulling over that cab, the old man and the robots? Not to mention stuff that was mispronounced, half heard, or turned out to be wrong like that the guy had a suicide vest. If everyone else out there had been hearing that unedited there would have been panic in the streets. There's a reason police don't release that poo poo to news organizations and a reason most news organizations don't roll with that info when they get it (because you know they all had guys listening to the same feeds we were). It was just way to confusing and crazy and not informed. And you know what? I am FINE with all that crazy info not getting out. Unlike some of these Redditors, who want to take that info and throw it out there and be pundits and heroes. I was glad I could listen for my own personal amusement, but I'm not a trained professional.

So I ended up recording about 20 hours of police scanners the other night, and someone asked about sharing them, so I'm putting up what I have if anybody else wants to download it. I started recording at 11:30 PM MST and aside from missing a few minutes here and there during the first six hours because the scanners kept dying on me, it runs up to about 9:30 the next night. I also tossed in a few notes with time codes for when some of the stuff like "In-n-Out Real Quick" happened, but that stops when I left it to go to bed, so I don't know when perimeter lobster or robot orgy happens. Fletch generously offered to host it on his site, so you can either grab it from this link here or from Alluvion down below. Download torrent81 (1 file; 831.96 MB) View torrent stats

There seems to be a lot of revisionism going on. First, the Sunil poo poo only exploded when supposedly his name was heard on the scanner. Reddit (and here) specifically forbid trying to post "evidence" that Sunil was involved. People here were referring to white hat as Sunil as if it were fact and I clearly remember one person being shouted down for daring to question this "fact" during the night. Second, at least when I was looking into it, the reddit mods were very specific to not post personal information and the goal was simply to try to pass leads over to the FBI. You can argue how helpful this was (who knows, honestly, we have no idea if anything reddit sent was actually followed up on by the FBI) but the people who crossed the line from "lets crowdsource image scanning and evidence gathering" to "lets accuse people of being bombers" was very clearly the New York Post not Reddit as a community. (There may have been individuals who crossed this line from Reddit too but I didn't see it personally.) There are a lot of people painting was good intentioned and ethically sound (but probably naive) internet detective-ry as "vigilantism" and "witch hunting" which clouds the reality that the real witch hunt was being done by the loving shitheads in the media taking photos and running them on the front page of newspapers. nebby fucked around with this message at 05:46 on Apr 22, 2013 |

I was at a kid's birthday party yesterday and happened to catch little snippets of a conversation between a few people who were so ignorant and misinformed on this whole thing, yet so confident in their explanations, it made my freakin' head spin. I mean, it was like "Czech Republic"-level ignorance. Point being, just wanted to thank you guys for being a consistent source of good, relevant information and (mostly) level-headed and well-informed discussion. I love this community. So thank you. Anyway, when do we get to see the Lord & Taylor video? Sounds like it's pretty damning footage, so does that mean that they keep it out of the public eye as long as possible, since it'll obviously be a key bit of evidence in the trial?

I've updated the timeline of the last GBS thread through page 50 (which brings it up to about 5:30PM Eastern the day of the bombing). I'd appreciate any help in taking some smaller (25 page) chunks and summarizing major events with a) short descriptions, b) links to the first mention (be they Twitter or outside news if linked in the SA post, or the Something Awful post itself if nothing else), and c) the times of those mentions. Otherwise this probably won't be finished for another two weeks.
