Huh? The only reason there are no stars in that photograph is because setting the camera's shutter speed and aperture size to a setting that would pickup the stars would result in the rest of the photograph being severely over exposed.

Exactly. The difference between daylight and starlight is about 20 f-stops, and cameras only have a dynamic range of about 6. That is why stars aren't visible in real video footage of the ISS. But in Hollywood movies they stick them in, supposedly so that the audience of mouth-breathers knows that it is set in space.

What did you think that I was saying?

We know exactly what you were saying. Your complaint is stupid... why should they not put stars in the movie, again? You can see stars when you're in orbit. You understand that they didn't actually film this movie in space, right? They didn't "shove them in" any more than they shoved anything else in. Your complaint would only be valid if this was a "found footage" style movie which it doesn't appear to be. Is it?

All of that attention to detail, and they had to include the fake Hollywood starry sky on the daylight side of the earth. Here's an actual photograph of the ISS for comparison.

Apollo 13 got it right. Why can't other movies do so?

Someone get Neil deGrasse Tyson on this, stat!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B6jSfRuptY

They probably just added the stars as fixed points of reference to give spoon-feed the audience a sense of motion and velocity relative to them. Otherwise, the characters are just spinning around on a black background and that's not very intense at all.

e: At what distance would the stars be visible? The ISS orbits at 230 miles, but the figure in that trailer is 372 miles.

I Don't Get It,
I Don't Get It,

Yeah, it's put in as a visual stylistic choice for the movie. Yeah, cameras can't pick it up without over exposing everything else, but you're not watching a movie thinking "Wow, I'm seeing this through a camera and any effects that say otherwise break my immersion."

You can be accurate and have attention to detail while still taking creative liberties.

Interesting video, but they left out the part from the real speech about suicide, the brain, and the master/servant idea:

quote:

As I’m sure you guys know by now, it is extremely difficult to stay alert and attentive, instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head (may be happening right now). Twenty years after my own graduation, I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience. Because if you cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed. Think of the old cliché about quote the mind being an excellent servant but a terrible master.

This, like many clichés, so lame and unexciting on the surface, actually expresses a great and terrible truth. It is not the least bit coincidental that adults who commit suicide with firearms almost always shoot themselves in: the head. They shoot the terrible master. And the truth is that most of these suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger.

This makes the video a bit bittersweet in context. It's like taking advice on how to lose weight from a 600 pound man. It's learning how to deal with depression from a guy who failed and succumbed to it, all the while believing that his mental illness was common to almost all people. In a case study of one, following David Foster Wallace's advice on "how to choose how to think in order to survive adulthood" has a fatality rate of 100%. I would like to write as well as David Foster Wallace, but I sure as hell don't want to think like him.
