Skeletron posted:Huh? The only reason there are no stars in that photograph is because setting the camera's shutter speed and aperture size to a setting that would pickup the stars would result in the rest of the photograph being severely over exposed. Exactly. The difference between daylight and starlight is about 20 f-stops, and cameras only have a dynamic range of about 6. That is why stars aren't visible in real video footage of the ISS. But in Hollywood movies they stick them in, supposedly so that the audience of mouth-breathers knows that it is set in space. What did you think that I was saying?

We know exactly what you were saying. Your complaint is stupid... why should they not put stars in the movie, again? You can see stars when you're in orbit. You understand that they didn't actually film this movie in space, right? They didn't "shove them in" any more than they shoved anything else in. Your complaint would only be valid if this was a "found footage" style movie which it doesn't appear to be. Is it?

Yeah, it's put in as a visual stylistic choice for the movie. Yeah, cameras can't pick it up without over exposing everything else, but you're not watching a movie thinking "Wow, I'm seeing this through a camera and any effects that say otherwise break my immersion." You can be accurate and have attention to detail while still taking creative liberties.

It just popped up on Co.Create's blog today - not sure how long it's been around but drat. Interesting video, but they left out the part from the real speech about suicide, the brain, and the master/servant idea: quote:As I’m sure you guys know by now, it is extremely difficult to stay alert and attentive, instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head (may be happening right now). Twenty years after my own graduation, I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience. Because if you cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed. Think of the old cliché about quote the mind being an excellent servant but a terrible master. This makes the video a bit bittersweet in context. It's like taking advice on how to lose weight from a 600 pound man. It's learning how to deal with depression from a guy who failed and succumbed to it, all the while believing that his mental illness was common to almost all people. In a case study of one, following David Foster Wallace's advice on "how to choose how to think in order to survive adulthood" has a fatality rate of 100%. I would like to write as well as David Foster Wallace, but I sure as hell don't want to think like him.

Telling the kids to take phenelzine would have made for a far less interesting commencement speech. That video is nice and everything but it doesn't really add a whole lot to the experience.

Whilst this guy's future most probably involves turning into a big pile of tiger poo poo at some point, I can't help but admire the sort of testicular fortitude you'd need to keep one of these fuckers as a house cat. Or perhaps he's just madder than a biscuit tin of hedgehogs. Either way, his movies are absolutely fascinating. Best bit of the following video: "That is one thing I've made peace with: everytime I play with him, I'm prepared to bleed a little bit". Actually no the best bit of that video is the way the tiger jumps up on the kitchen counter like a normal cat: http://youtu.be/7z8KLlCfzwc "The Wake Up Your Cat Thread: Tiger Edition" http://youtu.be/BV13TS990ZY That moment when your cat hears you opening the tin... http://youtu.be/2MUAOStqrCc Cleaning himself http://youtu.be/cnvDKfCQnZY This one's worth watching for the bit at 4:36 when the (young) tiger climbs on top of the guy http://youtu.be/vkVeExtH38M?t=4m36s Loads more here: http://www.youtube.com/user/oomyfok Mr. Gibbycrumbles fucked around with this message at 19:22 on May 10, 2013 |
