It really depends on what you're looking for. Breakthrough includes the World at War WW2 map. (Don't get the Pacific War title). And Global Gold has two extra expansions that are Assault on Communism :ussr: and Assault on Democracy which will have the largest WW2 map along with really nifty alt scenarios.

However, the thing is, WW1 and Breakthrough also have awesome campaigns, check it out http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=300&Itemid=512

While I'm glad they included the East Africa campaign in Breakthrough! It doesn't really capture the nature of the war. The Germans were essentially fighting a guerilla campaign with the occasional pitched battle. Lettow-Vorbeck's goal was to draw as many Allied troops into the theatre as possible to drain resources from the main game in Europe. He did this quite effectively by hitting allied supply chains, and letting disease do his work for him (I think there was one Allied unit that lost 95% of its men to disease and never saw a battle).

Strategic Command is just not cut out to model this. You would need a different engine which modelled supply and tropical disease in much more detail to do it justice. With a kind of asymmetric victory point condition similar to the iPad Battle of the Bulge game where the Allies need to conquer territory quickly, have lots of resources, but suffer horrible attrition. The Germans win by dragging out the war and causing a high number of Allied casualties through disrupting supply and disease.

Sounds fun! In order of preference:

1. Global Conquest - Alliance of Evil, Evil
2. WW1 Breakthrough - Russian Civil War, Bolsheviks
3. Assault on Democracy - Invasion America, Axis
4. WW1 - Triple Alliance, Entente

Apparently there's a Distant Worlds unannounced sale of sorts going on - everything 40% off if you buy the whole bundle, or up to 50% off for individual items. I say "unannounced," but apparently the announcement was folded into the release of the new expansion, so if you aren't looking for it it's a bit tricky to find out about it.

Still a bloody king's ransom, but if it'll convince those idiots at Matrix that not all games need to be priced into stratosphere...

After trying the game out a bit, this much I can say: For beginners, it's a pretty good "Yes, Prime Minister" simulation.

"Eh? You want us to offer those guys a free trade agreement? Oh, well, that sounds all right. You want to set up a new colony over there? Well, can't see why not. New Matrix deals: 19.99 USD for Carriers at War and 29.99 USD for Harpoon Ultimate Edition.

Carriers at War is incredibly tempting at that price, but I already played (an older version of) that game from about 2 decades ago and this one, despite the new interface, is still really limited as far as scenario selection goes.

Harpoon on the other hand makes me wary because it sounds like it just throws a bunch of "versions" of Harpoon at you sight unseen and with no guarantee on quality or playability, like those level packs/compilations for Duke Nukem 3D.

The second part of the WITE MapMod is up, this time with new counters:

The especially notable thing about it is that the creator moved the "soft factor" indicators to horizontal hash marks to the left of the unit icon - this makes it possible to view soft factors even while Fort levels are being displayed.

Spent way too much time play SPMBT last night. Managed to have the British delay the Soviets, but man did British tanks in the 70s-80s stink (at least in this game) vs Russian tanks and even BMPSs. The Lynx ATGMs I eventually got deployed were a godsend. Also defending the MACV company against VC infiltrators was a small and tight, but very fun scenario. Same with a Red Dawn inspired holding against Cuban tanks which demonstrated how a good layout of tanks and ATGM units can be devastating to an advancing army.

I used to play SP1,2,3 as a kid all the time, but haven't for a long while. Such an immensely enjoyable game and all the scenarios for free. I liked how you can have anything from Spec Op Missions all the way up to Fulda Gap Blowouts. I guess if there is one compliant (and this is only because I have limited time) is I wish you could move more than one unit at once, granted it might be hard how to effectively do that. Still this along with TOAW III are some of my favorite wargames, just wish I was good at them, but I'm finally starting to get the hang of things with SPMBT by just not trying to rush and trying medium engagements.

Does anyone have any good links to armored/infantry warfare theory manuals? I'm just trying to have a better understanding on how one should deploy troops and tanks, even if its not going to be a direct help since it is based on the real world and not the game system.

For some reason SPWAW always has display errors on my computer (kind of hard to describe), which sucks as I would love to do some WWII missions again.

I was wondering has anyone else here fans of Age of Rifles? Pretty much what SPMBT is for armored and infantry war in the modern age, but set during the 19th Century and filled to the gills with interesting and unique scenarios and locations.

EDIT: Looking at those Combat Mission games is making me very tempted...except Matrix Game prices...and I wish there were some Cold War hypo themed games. I wonder how the iPad version is? The description makes it seem like a legit Combat Mission game and not something like what Civ Rev (a nice game nonetheless) is to Civ4/5.

IIRC, there's a "unit move" option in SPMBT - might be in SPWAW, can't recall for sure. Only problem is, you get to move your command unit (I think) and then AI pathfinding takes over for the rest. And clusters.

Might work better if you move one hex at a time, maybe, but I'm impatSHIT MINES/ATGMS/BOGGED :argh:

Bingo hence the problem of it. I almost wish you could just draw a general point to advance to and have you do the deployment lines when it gets within range. Granted that only works if you're setting up a defense and not expecting enemies, in short I just need to be more patient...and read the manual (though I can only seem to find one for 5.0 floating around at the moment).

You can get CMSF for as little as $15, or CMSF+Marines bundle for $25. I especially enjoy custom made Red vs. Red campaigns where both sides use obsolete Soviet poo poo equipment like T-55's and AT-3 Saggers - wiping out T-72 companies with Javelins gets old at some point but honest to god ambushing the enemy with a recoilless rifle is different.

Yeah, basic CM:SF as US Army gets old fast because you have so many Javelins and can just dominate everything with those no sweat, the only question is if you can do it without taking casualties yourself. Brits and Marines are better about this and Red on Red is best of all.

The Marine and UK campaigns are much better, partly because those armies don't have the ridiculous firepower of a Stryker brigade, partly because the Syrians get much more modern equipment and Republican Guard formations, and partly because the scenario designers just plain got better at designing interesting battles.

Awesome. I was aware of the FM sites before (for some reason certain FM's make for a good way to kill time on the commute, the older Civil Disturbance one is kind of interesting),I just wasn't sure what titles are useful and which are useful, but not for the study of tactics and gaming applications. Oh yes England seemed to have went to war with everyone and everywhere at some point so you just had so much to work with. I loved all the tight defense situations you could have in the game. I was also lucky that when I got the game I also got the scenario expansion pack with it. Installing them was a massive pain in the rear end though (along with sound IIRC), even with Dosbox. I really wish someone would produce a modern...or hell just a WinSPMBT version of it, since lord knows people madea ton of scenarios for it. I loved the manual mentioning how "there was also a rocket artillery cult in the British Army" which gave me a mental image of British people sperging about rockets in the 19th Century and wanting to use them for everything. Also you can have Gurkhas :black101:

Sweet, I had no clue it was that cheap...I just wish I hadn't sperged and bought the Victoria II expansions, CKII and Old Gods two days ago. :arggh: Then again how often do these games go on sale normally, so it would be silly to wait it out...of course that logic also has me buying Harpoon Ultimate Edition too since that's on sale now. I do dislike how Battlefront (and previously MatrixGames but lucky enough I got TOAW later on) that they don't protect your download or you have to pay for it. I know they're not Valve, but I hate having to worry about where to store (and not being lazy and forgetting to store) the files. Though Google Drive helps out a lot now.

Red vs Red sounds fun and honestly it's the way most third world battles played out (Euro Equipment notwithstanding).

That's a good point. I guess Steam has spoiled me, since if it was a new console game I'd be paying $5 more. I was also looking at Shrapnel Games website so that was factoring in the mini-rage. I do like that everything that Battlefront sells seems to have a demo for it...which is also not something Matrix does (though Shrapnel does IIRC). Since the prices aren't a sale (my mistake) I think I'll give the demo a whirl first and play around with CM Touch first. Plus I now have a desire to reinstall Age of Rifles again and go spread civilization via Lee Enfields and play around with WinSPMBT some more.

The difference between Battlefront and Matrix is that Battlefront change on a par with new games rather than a premium over them, they do respectable discounts if you buy bundles, and they always offer a demo.

I'm willing to accept Battlefront saying 'we don't want to do sales, it won't help our revenue' because their baseline price is reasonable for the quality of game they're offering and I can try before I buy.

Also need to point out that Matrix is a publisher and games are made by developers, like WiTE is made by 2x3 guys or something, so its up to the developer to push out a demo based on the funds they have. For example, the Command Ops folks are talking with their customers about the prices they want to set with what they want to do next, Matrix isn't involved.

I would buy that so quickly, I still can't understand why no one has tried to make a new version or do a Matrix or MBT type approach. It's also good to know I wasn't the only one who loved the crap out of the game. drat I want to fight the Sepoy Mutiny right now...and bomb the crap out Korea with the US Navy....so much variety. Has anyone let the french know that if they aren't going to defend their country again and expect someone else to liberate them the least they could do is get rid of all the bocage now?
