I was wondering if that's all it was. On my video cameras I can set the headphone monitoring to have a tiny delay so it's easier to separate the recorded sound from live and any time I talk near the mic it completely throws off my speech patterns. Maybe it just depends on the person?

I have a feeling that people who are used to using communication programs like Skype or Ventrilo or similar programs, where you have to adjust your settings and tweak your microphone and whatnot, are used to hearing themselves enough that they might not be as effected by a speech jammer. I just tried it out, and it doesn't do anything to me.

I just tried it out on a coworker who has used a computer about 3 times in her life, and a microphone never, and no effect on her either.

It does vary by depending on who you are. But it's way more effective if you can't hear your own voice much - only the echo, so crank the volume and put on some some headphones that block outside noise if you have any.

I'd say that's pretty much the only requirement, you only have to hear the echo and can't hear your own voice, otherwise it doesn't work. The effects of the jammer still look exaggerated to me though.

It helped for me to read quickly, and crank the volume up. Trying to say the ABCs quickly or counting 1-20 or spelling your entire name had some odd effects too. I noticed words that had two f's, s's, l's, etc. can really throw you off. It was definitely a fun thing to play around with.

I telecommute for a living and run into this all the time when I'm in a tele- or video-con when someone has the remote end set up to feed back with a nice 1/2-second or so delay. It's super loving annoying, and you can often force yourself to power through, but it also largely depends on how interested you actually are in what you're saying, i.e. how important it is to you. Which makes it even more annoying, because if you feel the need to more accurately convey an idea, the harder a time you'll have doing so. If it doesn't matter and your goal is to just ramble, you can ignore the sound of your own delayed voice, but if you're actually trying to communicate meaningful ideas, it gets a looooot harder. Even so, those cases above seem exaggerated, usually me and the other people end up just pausing often mid-sentence and filling in with stupid-sounding "ummms" and the like.

Doctors used to use the speech-delay thing years (decades?) ago to test for deafness when there was a surge of people 'faking' deafness to get benefits or something. When done in the right environment it does work, but you can train yourself to overcome it.

Seriously though musical tastes differ, I much preferred the George Barnett version. Content, a funny song/animation by the same guy as did the 'George Washington' song, probably posted ages ago but still good. The Roleplay Tournament https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2XGp5ix8HE

You're saying that George Barnett's version is much better/more interesting than the parody version Indolent Bastard posted and you say this might be because he's British and British people like boring looking/sounding musicians. George Barnett is British. He even looks what I consider to be definitive British indie musician. Also what is this video you posted: Is it supposed to be bad on purpose like the Brett Domino video that Indolent Bastard posted? Your description said "a funny song/animation". It wasn't funny or good in any way so comedic tastes differ as well as musical tastes. Final Cause fucked around with this message at 18:12 on Jun 5, 2013 |

You can't dangerously cut off someone at a dead stop. In any event, even if he was in the wrong for getting in front of the van, which I don't think he was, that doesn't justify literally putting the dudes life in danger by jumping in front of him and slamming on the brakes. e: whether his initial move was legal or not really depends on UK road laws. Maybe he was supposed to overtake the van on the right instead of the left. It still doesn't justify putting the dudes life in danger then assaulting him. In a lot of places cyclists and motorcycles are allowed to overtake stopped cars in traffic. Someone in the youtube comments suggested it would have been perfectly legal to pass the van on the right. So yeah, I guess he did make an illegal move.
