Same with the democracy talk, just arrogant to the extreme. I think Moore would've been far better on the panel if Richard had been on it as well to spout that nonsense and have to deal with significant push back. Haass is a Morning Joe regular and an austerity cultist. It was pretty funny how he was trying to get those Pete Peterson talking points in there as Maher was trying to talk about Muslims.

Maher's done that pot speech on Obama a lot of times so it seems repetitive at this point.

My guess is the guy is part of a coming trend for folks from VICE in various respects to start hitting up the panel with more frequency since there's collab going on in general now with the HBO show---it was a weird panel this week but largely divorced from the worst sorts of idiocy which suits me decently given they were just back from an off week.

Also probably has a lot to do with the fact that Maher is an executive producer on VICE.

I got a bad feeling when the CNN Lady started to get on her soapbox on things, especially cringing on OT with her Reagan worship, but it was only until somebody thought to mention she was once one of McCain's handlers who should know better about Latino prospects and the modern GOP that it all came back to me...ugh. This was the wrong panel to have for all the poo poo that hit the fan this week, and the 50/50 sentiment trotted out was exceedingly weak considering, at the very least, there exist other proportional relationships that put a proper weighting on things. On the flip side VICE is finally airing the North Korea special next week for the season finale, and from this week's Morning After, I can't fathom why they didn't put their onsite Nigerian arrests by Shell and Friends on the postscript at the end of the episode so the bulk of the audience could have that staring them in the face. Same thing to a lesser extent with the existence of an off-camera PR handler for the Police spin in the Chiraq piece.

Speaking of Vice if you get a chance to go to their website check out their "Guide to North Korea" and "Guide to Liberia" videos as those are arguably what put them on the map.

Yeah, I really liked that episode of Vice. It was really funny watching the guy self-consciously go on a tour through the most massive Potemkin Village ever created. The best parts were when they pointed out that the lights in all the skyscrapers might just be on for their benefit and that no one in the pretend North Korean computer lab was clicking on a mouse or typing anything. It got a little preachy at the end though. "If only North Korea would stop being so hostile to the American empire and __________ then everything would be alright."

The best parts were when they pointed out that the lights in all the skyscrapers might just be on for their benefit and that no one in the pretend North Korean computer lab was clicking on a mouse or typing anything. I would say more the possible but probable. For example, propaganda village: quote:The village features a number of brightly painted, poured-concrete multi-story buildings and apartments, many apparently wired for electricity. The town was oriented so that the bright blue roofs and white sides of the buildings next to the massive DPRK flag would be the most distinguishing features when viewed from across the border. Scrutiny with modern telescopic lenses, however, has led to the conclusion that the buildings are concrete shells lacking window glass or even interior rooms, with building lights turned on and off at set times and empty sidewalks swept by caretakers in an effort to preserve the illusion of activity. I enjoy Vice but you're right. They're often preachy, self-righteous, and shallow in their reporting. But they also go a lot of places I would never go so more power to 'em. Oh, I thought by and large this episode sucked. Bill couldn't keep a handle of Niall and I couldn't stand the way he interviewed Patrick Kennedy. I'm all for tough interviews but Bill is still not a pro and when it's a pet issue he doesn't really give a poo poo what the other person says. I'm squarely in Bill's corner but it seemed like he just talked over Kennedy and never let him get a point out. Although, in Bill's defense, when Kennedy was asked to explain he dodged by saying there wasn't enough time. Gasland guy was fine but for a documentarian, he was pretty lacking in any factual pushback. I am fully inline with him as well but how about some numbers? How about the thousands of dollars the gas industry puts into campaign coffers and the millions they spend on astro-turfing. Go drive through coal country and you'll see all kinds of political yard signs that just say COAL. Go drive through Pennsylvania and the rest of shale country and you'll find much the same thing. Yep, what a terrible panel. I was also somewhat surprised to see Maher immediately jumping into the trope-laden Snowden pile on, since IIRC he was at least somewhat inquisitive moreso back when Manning and Assange first went down. Then again, I suppose the next things in line from the Guardian haven't came out yet since the start of it all, so all there is to do is either reckon the nature of the leaks in a serious manner or attack Snowden every which way and nobody else---generally a bad sign when something can unite the disparate hacks on the panel like tonight. At least Bill's dismay at the Syria situation was consistent with the mess that is likely to become. I felt bad for the Gasland dude---he'd have done far better to win the coin toss or whatever to be the first interview of the show which is usually the better venue for anybody with a forthcoming documentary to get into it without putting out the meat of the thing ahead of time without the context of the rest of the film next to being on the panel proper. Kennedy I think was a case of him becoming a lost cause to the reason as soon as he brought up his fervent "facts" which seemed absolute---and Real Time pretty much always turns into either constantly interrupting that or letting it run wild and ruin a show, unfortunately. Niall was one of the worst guests though---pompous to a Gillespie degree and practically an establishment character.
