Also check out Ash Borer, Weakling, Skagos, Fauna, Fell Voices (maybe), Deafheaven (gasp!), Gottesmorder, Alda, Lake of Blood, Panopticon, Fen, or Heretoir. I'm less familiar with bands similar to Wodensthrone. Maybe Drudkh? If that list is a bit overwhelming (although it's by no means comprehensive), I'd say start with Ash Borer. They're probably my favorite in the subgenre.

To my mind, Watain to do the big, showy, more accessible black metal really well, and whilst they continue to get it right, I'll continue to enjoy it. I quite enjoyed the ballad too

I finally listened to the Ruins of Beverast preview tracks. I just wish that every time I heard them I wouldn't immediately remember Alexander's previous band, Nagelfar, and how much I wish they hadn't fallen apart so many years ago. The new urfaust EPs and live album are up in the Van Records shop now, along with new Ruins of Beverast and a heap of new shirt designs. I hope they're still there on Sunday as I can't order before then! The EPs are the ones that I'm worried about selling out.

Speaking of Urfaust: I've seen them praised in many places (including here), but I've never gotten into them. What's a good place to start? Also, I got my copy of the Lychgate LP from Gilead finally, and it sounds amazing. Fell Voices too, I guess.

The mastering on that Fell Voices record really irritates me. I can appreciate raw production, and I get the "wall of sound" aesthetic they're going for, but to say the riffs are buried on that release would be an understatement. That said, they're absolutely mind blowing live. I must revisit Lychgate I guess, thought it was good, but nothing special. All the Urfaust releases have their merits, but I would start with the most recent full length probably, working backwards. Don't skip the Einsidler EP either (probably spelt horrendously wrong but I can't be bothered to check on my phone) as both tracks are really excellent. The Ritual Music... compilation is well worth checking out true, there are some brilliant tracks on it. I really hope I get to see them live one day, either because I find someone to travel with me, or they finally play London.

I've been listening to a lot of Les Discrets lately and I was wondering if there was a so called "blackgaze" band harder than that? I mean, it's all well and good, but I want something a little more Darkthrone and little less Joy Division. Any recommendations? Edit: I hope this is the right thread to ask.

Fell Voices and Ash Borer aren't blackgaze, but they do the "monumental wall of sound" thing really well. More importantly though: new Inquisition samples: http://youtu.be/tLZQZaVNi0g Also, the dude from Cobalt has done some really raw LLN worship under the Recluse moniker. Youtubing Weakling lead me to Gallowbraid in the related videos, and I can't miss a band as fantasy sounding as that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR0OzoojEkY (the song is called Oaken Halls of Sorrow, I think you can guess what it sounds like.) I was looking at their Facebook pages and found this kind of funny given recent conversations: Facebook posted:Hey guys, Jake here. I am honoured to announce that I was given the opportunity to perform some guest vocals on the upcoming Catuvolcus album! I got to listen to the whole thing yesterday, and it absolutely destroys! 'Gergovia' is nearly an hour of huge, energetic, powerful melodic black metal that harkens back to times before post-rock and shoegaze encroached on the genre and made it tepid, flaccid, and weak. Be warned: Catuvolcus comes armed with steel, torches, and mighty riffs - not an album to miss! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVAP3N9GziE
