Speaking of the Punchline... This last Saturday me and the wife went to see Ben Bailey (the host of "Cash Cab"). It was last minute, so I didn't know what to expect. There were two good opening acts, Lace Larrabee and Jerrod Harris. During their acts there was apparently a drunk Bachelorette party that was getting noisy, but both comedians ignored the group. So far so good. But then, Ben Bailey comes out, gets about thirty seconds in, the girls make some more noise, and he abruptly halts and *completely* tears into them for a good two minutes. As in, a "I will tear off your head and poo poo down your neck"-style tirade with the veins in his neck bulging out. A lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the routine at first, but when they realized he was serious, they were kind of taken aback. I know we were. He wasn't able to completely recover the act after that. It didn't help that the rest of his act was mostly about who he hated, who he wanted to kill, etc. It was a pretty uncomfortable show. I've been to the Punchline about a half a dozen times in the last year, and it's the first time I've ever seen a steady stream of people leaving early. We would have left ourselves had we gotten the bill earlier. Since I don't attend comedy shows as much as some folks here, how often does something like this happen? It seems like handling a rowdy group is part of the art, right up there with diffusing hecklers. I don't want to second-guess him, but Bailey really didn't seem to handle that very gracefully.

I try to go to at least three shows every SF Sketchfest, plus maybe another couple of shows a year if I can, and this is all I could remember vis-a-vis heckling: - When I saw Patton Oswalt at Cobb's, he located two bachlorette parties and engaged them preemptively (he held a quick contest to determine which was the better one), which gave them attention and kept them quiet for the show. It was a graceful and funny way to deal with potential disruption ahead of time. - The Human Crash Test show at this year's Sketchfest didn't exactly have hecklers, but there were some very ardent fans (I had the misfortune of sitting a couple of seats down from one) who wanted the comedians to know how much they loved them. Especially one chick who was really into Natasha Leggero. She was really good at quick one-liners and keeping things going. - At the Bruce Campbell Q&A and Army of Darkness showing (also at SF Sketchfest), there was one jackass who got to come up and ask Campbell a question. He said something like "How does it feel to be interrupted?" and then walked away just as Campbell started answering. Didn't faze Campbell a bit. I think he's seen everything at this point and insta-recovers from anything. (And I got to talk to him one-on-one for a minute at a pre-show signing, which made this the best show ever. ) - This was not in San Francisco, but at a Sunnyvale comedy club, Doug Benson stopped a heckler by just commenting that the guy was being kind of rude and mean interrupting a show other people had paid to see. That actually guilted the guy into shutting up, which surprised me.

An insane heckler was screaming at Chelsea Peretti when I saw her once and she handled it well and the woman was escorted out. Honestly, I'm surprised the Punchline let them go for two other acts. I saw Wyatt Cenac handle a heckler a couple weeks ago and it was beautiful. He tore the guy apart, then apologized to the crowd when it turned out the guy had already stormed out. It actually happened as he was heading off stage and he still managed to make it into a great closer. The only big comedian I've seen not handle a heckler too well was Chris Hardwick, who I think gets people who still harbor weird Singled Out resentment a lot. In my experience he gets way too defensive way too fast. Ben Bailey did not handle it well.

Given Ben Bailey's last career I would not be surprised to see him lose his poo poo now and then. Comics who have some TV success tend to have bitterness about it for along time. It seems to just take time for that old buzz to die and them to readjust.

Theatre was sold out and everyone was dying laughing. Burr is great. Speaking of handling hecklers, at the 2012 JFL42 I saw Todd Barry do a small midnight show. There were probably only 50 people there, max. One guy wasn't heckling but he was giving his input on jokes, or occasionally just repeating punchlines. He was by himself and was clearly drunk. The openers mostly ignored him but Todd was not having it. He told the guy that he was going to ask him to move to the back and to relax and quiet down, but the guy got belligerent and wouldn't leave the front row, so club staff came to escort him to the back. Keep in mind that Todd didn't even ask for him to be kicked out, just wanted him further back where he wouldn't be so disruptive. Anyway, the guy loses his poo poo and starts crying. It was hilarious, because on one side you have a crying drunken idiot, and on the other side you have Todd Barry, who is the calmest, most relaxed person on stage, making fun of the guy without coming across as angry or anything. Frankly I think Todd found it funnier than the crowd did. It was awesome.

I saw Tracy Morgan at an international comedy festival in April and it was honestly one of the worst shows I've ever sat through. I think he's a funny guy but when he's funny it seems to be off the cuff or in the moment and not something he's written out or anything. He told jokes that I vividly remember hearing in elementary school and almost all of them were really lame dick and pussy jokes. Like, a step away from "Whoever smelt it dealt it!" type of stuff. Anyway, I'll continue to support the guy in television shows when other people write for him or he can improv but don't ever go watch his stand-up.

I searched and haven't seen it mentioned here, but it is there a thread anywhere about the recent "news" or hoax or whatever it is that Andy Kaufman has a 24 year old daughter even though he died 29 years ago? referring to this: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2013/11/14/andy-kaufman-daugther-says-hes-not-dead/3525403/ Personally, I call bullshit and think he's dead, but if anyone on earth could pull this off and if, for once, the "He's really alive and faked his own death!" conspiracy crowds were right, it would be Kaufman. Not Hendrix, Elvis, Jim Morrison. Not Hitler. Not any of them. It would be Andy.

I'm aware of the "Andy is alive" websites and such. It makes me wonder if they staged that exchange simply in the spirit of Andy Kaufman which, if they did, I'm not sure is in incredibly poor taste, a really brilliant idea or both. Obviously, Andy's brother would have to be in on the joke if it's a put on.

I scored tickets to the Eric Andre show live December 3rd at the echo. Should be pretty nuts considering Eric Andre is nuts. I saw him recently at hot tub and he was hysterical. And I imagine his show live should be great. I'm also guessing Hannibal will be there too so of course that's always a plus.

Every Monday in Toronto there's a showcase show with around 8 comedians, and the bar puts out a podcast with about 4-5 of the sets from any given night, and sometimes they put up sets that don't go well and people forget their jokes. There's a lot of "That was supposed to be my closer but your reaction wasn't very... ah well gently caress it goodnight" or "There's more to that joke but whatever" stuff, but sometimes it's good.
