I don't have good experience with XBMC but it's been years. I just mean a normal pop-up, double-click to enter/exit full screen media player. One where I can use the mouse wheel to affect the volume, which will is able to raise the volume above the normal 100% without having to enter a menu.
I had to look up MCE remote. I'm not buying a thing when I am happy using a wireless mouse. I want exactly two functions from my "remote" and I don't even need to look at the buttons to know what they do.

mewse posted:

Most people use the volume controls on their TV and a wireless keyboard like the logitech K400

Everything in Windows has its own volume and level. While this works, it makes the next sound coming from the PC to be unexpectedly really really loud unless I remember to undo it every time.
A keyboard has crossed my mind; space is how you pause in VLC. I don't want to employ a second, wireless keyboard to bring across the room for one big button on it. This button could and should be on my wireless mouse.

ThinkFear posted:

Pretty sure theres a vlc plugin for that. Still another thing to install I guess.
There is, but it doesn't work with the current version of VLC. Back when it worked, it could not stay enabled by default and was an option you always had to turn on. From the half hour I spent googling the issue this seemed to be the best solution. It was after all this searching and trying to use a broken plugin and submitting a bug report that I realized how petty this whole thing is and I can just bind Space to LeftClick in GlovePIE in 5 seconds.

Next up on the little annoying things that turn into mammoth tasks that take me away from some important projects I HAVE to get finished before leaving the company next week:

We apparently have a corporate YouTube account and the boss wants some old rear end promotional video we made about 15 years ago to go onto the page.

"This shouldn't take you too long Humphreys"

Problems:
1. It's on an old DVC tape.
2. YouTube account password was changed 11 months ago with no documentation
3. Password recovery sends email to some random gmail account
4. "The video isn't HD, make it look nicer!"

Solutions:
1. Find a Deck in the electronics pergatory room and get it to actually work
2. Go through the motions of password recovery
3a. Call any ex-employee that I think might have had ANY form of knowledge and see if the password recovery was sent to their gmail
3b. After all this find out that the account isn't even the LIVE account, just a half asses attempt that wasn't used as certain managers were fighting over what to call the account due to another YouTube user having what we wanted.
4. It's a 15 year old 4:3 video digitized off a tape using a lovely Deck over SD-SDI, it isn't going to be pretty.

So wait, you get a severance package for quitting, but not if they find a reason to fire you after you've put in your official and documented notice of resignation? None of this makes any sense to me. Where do you live?

It's like the opposite of that here. If you quit, you get jack poo poo, but if they fire you during your notice period you have a case for applying for unemployment benefits at least.

Note, that volume past 100% in VLC is simply compressing the range and will result in clipping. Not much cop for audio fidelity, but I understand that a lot of videos may be quiet.

So I screwed up massively at work. Our biggest customer had a major issue over a weekend that I was on call and I worked the whole weekend getting it straightened out. So now I am on the team that is supporting them and they request me by name.

Yeah it's job security, but I went from a place where most of the issues I was working on I knew and I could just put my head down and crank out tickets to now where I am given tickets for a major customer because they are bleeding edge enough that no one knows their stuff exactly, but I am the one to figure it out. It would be a nice learning opportunity except for the time and political pressures.

It's a US thing. In the perfect world, the concept is that if you give two weeks notice (varies on HR policy), and they can find no terminable fault during that time, you get to cash out your Vacation/PTO in the final check. That way, you don't just slack off/float for the next 2 weeks and actually help the company during the transition time.

Also, if they find a cause for termination, you often can't get unemployment benefits. So it's in the company's favor to find something wrong and sack you for it. It's vindictive and it saves dollars!

What type of phone? I have an Android (a couple, actually) and I'm able to bring up Google Play and it's able to show me roughly where my phone is. I mean, it'll show me the physical address but it's not going to tell me it's under the couch cushions. It will, however, let me have it ring at max volume so that it will help me locate it. I'm not familiar with iOS, but I would think they have something similar.

Ah, I didn't think about cashing out vacation. I'm actually in the U.S., but my last job's policy was that you have to have at least 80 hours left after the cash out. So I basically just burned up all my vacation before I left.

Cabling and the folks that run our cabling is currently pissing me off. We've got quite a few of these that run to various closets and these asswipes haven't bothered to label which closet they go to. They have numbers, but being that there are multiple closets that have a drop labeled as 30D, that isn't very helpful. So, I've been running around like an idiot with the toner and wand to track down where they're terminated. Then, I've created labels and properly label the closet they're going to. Then, we have a couple of spots that look like they have drops, but it turns out, they've been clipped. Why the gently caress didn't they replace it with a blank plate?! I am so goddamn tired of doing other peoples jobs. I'm far behind on my own poo poo I have to do because I keep having to fix other peoples fuckups.

What the gently caress is it with contractors and just chopping through anything that looks a bit in their way. On what planet is it acceptable to cut through stuff without asking whoever's booked you to do a job?

On the planet where it's cheaper by far to just repair the damage they cause than it is to fight them in court. Either you sue them for damages, or you refuse to pay them for their work, at which point they sue YOU (or put a lien on your building, I'm not sure how this works with commercial property). Either way you're going to get lawyers involved, and after about 5 minutes of that you've already lost more money than you'll ever hope to recover.

Accountability, reputation, ethics, integrity, none of this matters in the world of American business. The only thing that matters, the ONLY thing, is the number on the quarterly earnings report. Because of this, nobody is willing to go after lazy shithead contractors who just sawzall through anything in their way, so they have no reason to not be lazy shitheads.

I think he means it doesn't natively have a PCL or PS renderer in the printer, so the server needs to take the documents, render them, and then send them to the printer using some made up driver garbage.

It draws your mind back to things like Winmodems.

We're remodeling the other side of our building and one of the things we'll have is a new training room so my boss went to ABC Warehouse and bought three 60" plasma televisions.

Aside from the fact that the IT Director who probably makes double what I do has spent the last week deal-hunting to save $50 on a TV, and wasted countless hours discussing televisions and wall mounts with half the people in the company, the remodel isn't going to be done for 3 months.

So I've got this taking up a ton of room in front of me, and now each person who walks by my desk gets to serve up their very own version of:

"Hey Bob looks like Santa came early!"
"Hey Bob my TV's came in!"
"Hey Bob just load one of those up in my car"

Not to mention the helpdesk guy gets to talk LCD vs Plasma and Smart TV vs non-smart TV for hours on end.

That specific model's also likes to break the local print spooler, preventing printing even to other printers, so badly that the only way I've ever found to get it working again is to manually delete the files that represent the print queue. It isn't a consistent behavior, some jobs just make it poo poo itself, and if you just try to restart the print spooler service without doing that it will just break the service again.
