I just ran across a white Mercedes CL 63 AMG with a Top Gear license plate insert at the Intercontinental The Clement Hotel in Monterey (next to the aquarium). Is the UK or US version filming something here right now, maybe at Laguna Seca, or is it just a poser with a Top Gear plate? It was being tailed by a Porsche GT3RS into the valet parking area.

There's a Nissan Sentra that I see in the parking lot at work with a TG plate all the time. This would be in NE Indiana.

Fair enough, although Monterey isn't quite the shithole that NE Indiana is. There weren't any LR Discovery camera cars lurking around, so maybe it was just another plebian car spending the weekend at Seca.

what?
The important question is whether it's in the rear plate position in a non-show environment. If it's only the front or at a show, it's probably just some random who bought a Top Gear plate. If it's on the road or similar with the TG plate at the rear, a camera car and police escort are probably nearby.

Rear plate, non-show environment, and it had just driven in off the street to the valet parking area. But as I said, no camera cars to be seen, or police. Just your bog-standard GT3RS trailing behind it.

While not directly Top Gear, James May's Toy Stories special with his Meccano Sidecar racer running the TT course is finally airing January 3rd. I can only imagine how drunk they had to get Oz Clarke to sit in the sidecar.

I really wish they'd do more cheap car challenges. I love seeing them hoon around in supercars, but Jeremy "fixing" his Porsche's tire balance with tape and a coin was hilarious and rhe budget supercar challenge makes me smile just remembering it.

That, along with the finale to series 13 where he drove the Vantage were two of the most moving things they've ever done.

I'm not British, but living in a former coal mining boomtown, I can definitely appreciate the past being filled with promise and a present full of decayed, rusting relics.

Love when they go from hilarity to sober reflection like that.

Clarkson is from Doncaster (as am I, actually), which was very much one of these old mining/engineering towns which suffered a downturn - though not as bad as many areas, and it diversified/recovered pretty well, especially compare to places farther north. He wrote an article for the TG magazine in the nineties that was partly a review of the Aston Martin Vantage (the thuggish Virage-based one) and partly a reflection on the loss of the old industries from his hometown.

Still, at least it's not Rotherham.

It's a week later than that, February 2nd. They film the studio segments on the Wednesday before the air date; the Applause Store (who distributes tickets for Top Gear filming) have their first date for Top Gear filming as the 29th of January.

I would be OK with an entire hour long Top Gear episode of all the guys driving somewhere boring in boring cars in real time. I bet the James May one would be a fascinating discussion of mechanics and machines.
