No one who studies evolution seriously considers The Origin of Species a prophetic text that contains ultimate truth. It is a science publication with testable hypotheses and observations.

Equally important, the differences between the two events he mentions make them entirely unrelated to his point. The Sacred Constitution dictates what the government does, so it applies to the withholding of federal and state benefits to gay marriage, yet has no bearing at all on a private organization's business decisions (suspending a very public employee for hurtful speech).

Horsey is such an idiot sometimes.

That's not the point. He's saying that making the debate about Bible and about Christian values :usa: is irrelevant to the real nature of the issue, which is political, and must be led within boundaries of what is acceptable as political in a liberal democracy.

You may argue that he is missing the point because the Duck guy was just stating his opinion without an intention to fall into the political framework, but a counterargument to that would be that the underlying issue is the worrying equivalence of law and religiousness prevalent in Conservative discourse.

To tie Darwin into the problem: The liberals are mistaken to accept the Conservative line of argument by responding to it. They shouldn't focus on the validity and interpretation of Biblical statements (for which evolution - and Darwin as a shorthand - is a powerful symbol), they should stay firmly inside the bastion of civil liberties and protect it from the erosion that comes with religious arguments.

Yeah, maybe that wasn't the best part of his opinion piece to cite, but this is basically his point. Whether the Duck Dynasty guy is right about what the Bible said and whether the gay straw-man is right about Origin of the Species isn't particularly relevant. Our rights as Americans are defined by the Constitution, and those rights include the rights of gays to marry and the right of Phil Robertson to complain about it (and the right of A&E to do whatever it wants to Robertson).

That doesn't seem like a very charitable interpretation of the first pointer. Do you disagree with the idea that racism is a spectrum, rather than "an either/or proposition"?

Half the posters in this forum have been made up. This website is a goddamn ghost town.
It's perfectly accurate to say that denying you're a racist is irrelevant to whether or not you actually are racist. Lots of people that hold bigoted views claim that they're not racist simply because they're not literal white supremacists. That or they're just lying.

One thing I'm surprised about is that none of the rogue's gallery of cartoonists here covered Kshama Sawant (the actual Socialist elected for Seattle's city council). I was expecting an army of cartoons cowering in fear over her and the Soviet menace :ussr:, but I guess she's too local and obscure even for them.

I want to say that there was a talking point from misinterpretation of actual studies of "Most sea ice in 16 years, suck it libs!" from last year and then they just ran it through the talking point izer again, adding a generation of fuzz on top, like a bad VHS copy---from "if sea ice, then why climate change" to "no change, suck it some more" (and added another year on top because 2014 isn't 2013.)

VVVVV Right, that. I just seem to remember "16 years" being a specific reference to a right-wing sea ice talking point.

If you go off solely land temperature measurements, there's been no statistically significant warming in 17 years.

Because all the heat's been going into the ocean.

I think the cashier is saying "shove your groceries up your rear end."

The correct answer is, of course, paper bags or reuseable bags, as someone who knew even the tiniest, most miniscule bit about the issue would know already. This is Mallard Fillmore-level ignorance.

As a bonus, here's a mini-collection of some Ramirez Benghazi cartoons. There are lots more that mention Benghazi, but I stuck with ones that had it as the main subject, as listing every cartoon of his that included Benghazi would take hours.

There was a hot year 17 years ago so until every year is consistently hotter than that single anomalous year, global warming is over. Until we get another really hot year, then that is the new benchmark.
