zoux posted:Yeah except the people complaining didn't understand what the cartoon was trying to say and then fell all over each other trying to be the first to snark it. I get it, but the third panel really is "some gizmo" and contradicts his point. Because modern law really does need to be very specific and technical, but making up a word salad suggests that it's actually capricious and making the situation sound more complicated than it really is. Reading the comic without reading his mind, it sounds like he's saying we don't need these dumb specific laws because "free speech" and "liberty" should cover it. Internet Webguy posted:
Branco's so weird about how he depicts everybody, whether he agrees with them or not, as ugly sour slobs who look like they haven't felt a moment of joy in their life. It's not entirely a bad thing to avoid cheap symbolism like that, but does the common denominator need to be "clearly suicidal"?

The point of the cartoon is "it's stupid to defer to the FOUNDERS on everything because they didn't anticipate any of our modern problems." It's really, really, REALLY obvious, guys. It's not obvious, which is why several posters expressed confusion about what it was trying to say. Bors threw together a bunch of different technologies and issues, some of which are tech-related and some of which aren't, some of which involve actual debates and some of which don't. He then doesn't quote the actual content of the bill of rights, but uses some buzzwords. It would make sense as a criticism of people abusing the founding fathers' words by just asserting "freedom" and "liberty", but all the prior content serves to obscure that point. Even the folks posting to say how they liked the comic aren't entirely in sync about what it meant. It is, in fact, A Bad Comic. If Bors had wanted to make the point you mention, he should have used a single example of technology not matching originalism, and followed through on it, or given several short examples of modern scenarios not matching direct constitutional quotations. As it stands, it's just a list of things that don't tie together, and a strawman of both the bill of rights and originalism. Imagine if this comic just involved pseudo-Jefferson describing the Edward Snowden case, or Trayvon Martin. The last panel would be unchanged, the same point would be made, and it would have a much stronger impact. Discendo Vox fucked around with this message at 02:00 on Mar 12, 2014 |

The point of the cartoon is "it's stupid to defer to the FOUNDERS on everything because they didn't anticipate any of our modern problems." It's really, really, REALLY obvious, guys. No it wouldn't, it would mean that he disagreed with the judge's decision because the Bill of Rights clearly (according to the plain reading of the cartoon) is incompatible with allowing upskirt photos. It wouldn't even be in the running for top twenty dumbest concepts in political cartoons for this day. It would just be completely not the intent of the author, which makes this a bad cartoon, which is not the end of the world. We mock cartoons for employing metaphors poorly all the time. I couldn't care less that it's a liberal doing it. Don't complain that people are having trouble seeing your point of view when you're making no effort at all in understanding other people's point of view. It's incredibly unpersuasive.

Oh Snafu's back to this same ol' point, is he? Man, Damon and Pythias is a deep cut even for a political cartoon from the 1800s. And I have no idea what the hell's going on. In the story, Pythias was sentenced to death but wanted to see his home one last time, so Damon took his place in prison with a time limit for Pythias' return. Pythias gets waylaid by pirates and barely makes it back before Damon is executed, and the king pardons Pythias for being a good friend. The dog is Damon, I guess? Pythias is the rat in rat heaven who's eating a big ol' plate of spaghetti, instead of saving his friend from his fate of lying on a dais while other rats look at him? And this has something to do with San Francisco. Your edit makes more sense, and it doesn't make any sense.

MacKay had an uninspiring cartoon about Hockey Night in Canada, and then followed it up with this masterpiece: Canada just signed a new free trade agreement with South Korea that a lot of people in Ontario are worried will do serious harm to our auto industry due to losing all tariffs on imported Korean cars, while non-tariff barriers like fierce nationalism in purchasing preferences will prevent us from a corresponding increase in sales to Korea. On the other hand, it's great for natural resource exports which are what the current Conservative government thrives on. So yeah.
