I've found Twitter to be an incredibly useful tool for professional networking, actually. In the DevOps community particularly, most people of any particular importance usually have good stuff to say.

You can follow all your vendors etc.

So when someone has a new product or an outage or security issue you can get live updates. A lot of status pages for companies are just twitter feeds now.

Sure, you can manually find them all and bookmark them without an account but you can't tweet back or just have them all in one spot.

Post automated server status updates to Tumblr. Will work just like the above, but also people will reply to them with Sherlock GIFs and comments that your server should kill itself for being white and cisgender, even if it's actually an HP DL380 G5 with a PERC4 RAID controller.

This could actually work quite well because we refer to our batch boxes as "BI File Servers". This will also prove that when tumblr isn't raging about something, you know something has gone wrong and the natural order is upset.

Edit: poo poo we have a system that's actually called CIS as well.

My boss has been fighting for almost 2 weeks to get BIG_HOST_COMPANY to change their terms of service and contract with us, just for us, because we're special snowflakes.

Not yet Bob, it’s on my schedule for today however. As discussed yesterday, these terms are pretty much as-is set in stone no consideration for unique terms since we service 50,000 customers globally with those terms in multi-tenant environments. They were designed to be incredibly balanced which is rare. Apple terms are not balanced at all they are shameful yet everyone agrees to them. All xxxxxxx customers are customers at-will with the 100% right to cancel at any time for any reason with no penalty. That having been said, I have not digested your request and want to do so prior to a final response. That will happen today. Thanks for your patience since I’m just a bit overrun this week 

I was able to do this to great effect recently. My now ex-ex-boss (i still work in the same company but in a different division) would continually browbeat my ex boss into having me clear stuff through her (to the point of CCing her on all tickets, getting clearance before installing hardware and other silly crap no one else in the division that didn't work under her before the reorg had to put up with. Fast forward to now where I work at a much better division within the same company and she tries this again only to run into my new boss who happens to be a director and far above the offending ex-ex-boss.

She now has to have upper management audit HER meetings and got written up and has left me alone, while my new boss and I get along great. I was so afraid to make a lateral move but since doing so life has been so much better.

Lessons learned? Two wrongs CAN make a right and making a lateral move can be an amazing choice.

Get loving hosed. So that lovely security admin job I applied for is being considered, not for me, but for my lazy, uninspired, technically inept co-worker who only has seniority and his good-ol-boys club to back him. I'm tired of being on the hell desk. YOTJ indeed.

EDIT: no more consideration, he got the job, only because of his seniority. Glad I have a chilled bottle of Tanqueray 10 at home.

The secret to getting off the helldesk is to get any IT job that isn't helldesk.

If I could do it all over again (besides never being on the helldesk to begin with) I would have been a little bolder about my job hunting while I was on the helldesk way back when. I would have lied, cheated, and virtual done anything to get any junior admin type role their was. Nothing would be too taboo. Because once you get a non-helldesk job, suddenly the skills you list on your resume all of sudden have some weight.

I wish your current title didn't matter as much as it does for finding new jobs. I wish titles didn't matter period.

after speaking with my boss about this, there is a good chance that im going to get a promotion to a job that doesn't exist yet. I'm not holding my breath, but If I'm helping him architect the job role, responsibilities, and pay grade, I'm aiming to keep my sweet sweet hourly pay, 15% raise and a lovely "work from home once a week" package, at least for the summer. I know full well that it'll be like 5-7% and no work from home, but a man can drink dream right?

Make sure its something you want to do. A lot of time "lead" in the name can end up being a supervisor (without the limited power) while still taking on the heaviest part of the daily production workload. 15% raise and some WFH sounds good though. Just make sure the duties are well definded.

They still have the same design as the latest Cisco ones, but I think they feel less substantial and the box looks like a knockoff model. They also cut the number of LEDs on the ports to 1, which doesn't really make any practical difference but doesn't really help the "Looks like a cheap knockoff" effect.

It doesn't have to actually do anything aside from DHCP, but yeah. I have a feeling this was a "cost conscious" setup since usually for T1s the ISP brings their own Cisco router and switch.

Its still going to be an edge device though right? Like providing nat and such? If yes, rip. If its going to be used like a switch then it might not have to be reset as much. If all I needed was a device to provide dhcp, so many other options I would have chosen. Probably a good time to mention to someone that choosing hardware is sort of important.

If they're anything like us, the system was probably originally licensed for Vista but had been downgraded to XP. I'm actually in the process of re-doing a shitload of XP systems to Vista for this very reason.

Probably this then, I know little about business licensing, and no explanation. This company must have at least 10,000 licenses or more though of every other flavor of windows, but we specifically never use Vista ever. It just seemed very odd to us that they'd put vista on a pretty important system, but I'm guessing it's free this way?

edit: Incredible insane timing, I just got an email mentioning how how different licenses can be downgraded although not for this specific reason. Also a chart of windows 8 licenses and there are 12000 (which is faaaaaaaaar more than I would have thought)

Oh, yeah, it's gotta do NAT too. Slipped my mind as I was trying to track down which mis-labeled port everything went to as I was posting.

All of the computers here are still XP and I don't think there's a current timetable for upgrading.
