i'm making an sa forums client (web tech + phonegap) and I wanted to use swiping to move between forums > forum > thread. Unfortunately there's a pretty significant android bug with scrolling and swiping (it can't do both) so I've been making a javascript library to work around that. also the idea is to have live animation during the swipe because most other approaches (like jquery mobile) just have an uninterruptible animation that transitions the whole page. http://holloway.github.io/swiper-do-swipe/ (works fastest in webkit, but it does support firefoxOs) bugs: you can't scroll vertically right now but i'll fix that soon

Luigi Thirty posted:i bought a breadboard-mountable RCA jack but i haven't gotten around to looking up how to output video and build my own Fairchilde Channel F for b&w composite video, the hardware side is pretty easy - you only need two outputs, a 470 ohm and a 1kohm resistor however, you have to generate the signal on the fly, generating horizontal and vertical sync pulses and counting clock cycles or you can just use the arduino TVout library

okay so my friend claims that she mixed blue and red food colouring, and it turned out green. she asked me why this might be the case she swears that she did not simply mistake a bottle of yellow food colouring for red, and while i'm p. sure this is still the most probable explanation by far, i will do my due diligence in investigating this mystery of science the obvious route seems to be: get the transmission spectra of the food colouring dyes, and then get the emission spectrum of the lights she was using (fluorescent i think), and then figure out what sort of colour one would expect to see so, step 1 is build a spectroscope. my first prototype is just a kludged-together slit->tube->diffraction grating->digital camera, so the spectra i'm getting out of it are pretty rough here's a spectrum i got from a CFL bulb i'm going to build a more solid one out of lego that will actually sort of mount to the camera and allow me to precisely control the amount of light getting in and the angle it's at, and then stick it on a tripod or something so that it'll be stable for the relatively long exposures it'll need to do

a long time ago i wrote a program to push text (with a rudimentary font/color syntax) to scrolling text led signs its got stocks and news headlines and charlie chan quotes and whatever else can be scraped and printed to stdout after about a year at cur job i finally got around to making some scraper scripts for stuff relevant to there, eg build status, any recent pages, current/peak qps for the day, so its now set up and scrolling anyway thats my story Progressive JPEG fucked around with this message at 08:40 on Jan 16, 2017 |

Sagebrush posted:you should read this first (Feynman) yeah i've read that before. and i mean i'm 99.9% sure that there's nothing crazy going on but i want to test it anyway. why? because it's an excuse to build a neat little scientific instrument. and colours have fascinated me for a while (a few years back i looked into the feasibility of building that colour-changing pen i had an idea for, and while it turned out that actual inkjet printer heads use some wacky microfluidic stuff which was way way way outside of my capabilities for fabrication at the time, i learned a whole lot about how colours work. also i built a little thingy that would hook up to an arduino and get a colour reading off a surface by flashing a red, green, and blue LED at it in quick succession and measuring the reflected light with a photoresistor, which was a fun project in itself) spectroscope update: i tried looking at the heating element of my stove while making lunch, but it was too dim. a candle flame looked pretty similar to sunlight. an LCD screen looked sort of like the CFL.

Beer idiot spare time project update: I made my own immersion wort chiller out of copper and vinyl tubing. The idea is that, after boiling your various beer ingredients to turn them into wort, you use this thing to cool the wort off quickly. The faster you can cool the wort, the sooner you can get in in the fermenter and add the yeast and seal it up, which gives you a much smaller chance of contamination from aerial bacteria and wild yeast. Plus, cooling quickly enough makes the proteins that cause hazy beer sink to the bottom of the kettle instead of staying suspended. One of the vinyl tubes hooks up to the water faucet, the other goes in the sink/down the drain, and the copper part goes in the kettle with the wort (having been sterilized by putting it into the wort while it's still boiling), and you run cold water through until the wort has cooled down to your desired yeast pitching temperature. A commercial immersion wort chiller runs about $70, I made mine for just under $40 and 5-10 minutes of pipe bending and assembly. It should be able to get the wort to go from boiling to under 80 degrees in less that 20 minutes (versus 40+ minutes with an ice bath).
