The part where he described using the von Trapp house from Sound of Music in a movie about Al Capone in which several people get brutally murdered had me nearly in tears from laughing so hard.

Speaking of bourbon semantics, names can be pretty important. My mom has this thing she does where she doesn't try very hard to pronounce names correctly or remember them. (She and my dad have been married for 33 years and she still mispronounces his name. In fact, she seldom pronounces my name right either.) I had to explain to her why she needed to stop saying "Chink & Chong."

Slice of life: I almost became that caricature of a "Social Justice Warrior" that conservative people complain about and I don't think actually exists. A close friend posted a picture of his neighbors dog with a surgery collar and said basically "the saddest expression." And immediately before I was reading about Israel and Gaza, and the articles helpfully had photos. And I wanted to write CHILDREN ARE DYING WHY DO YOU GIVE A gently caress ABOUT DOGS THAT AREN'T EVEN YOURS AND ARE GOING TO LIVE.

But thankfully I realized proximity matters, and there's not much screaming on the internet would do. And the dog looks pretty sad, and me being mean to people I care about over the internet doesn't do a drat thing. Plus I've shared too many animal videos to have a leg to stand on.

Wow, just saw blatant product placement in a TV spot for Expendables 3 (an HP laptop with the HP logo clearly in the frame). Not sure I've seen that before (or at least not recently), outside of the Tumblr logo being visible (I think on the side of a building?) in TV spots/trailers for Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Took a right turn in my journey through Homeric cinema to a jaunt through imperial Roman sleaze.

Messalina, Messalina is an awful mostly pornographic comedy not worth watching at all, except for the last 15 minutes or so which are an absolutely insane comedic bloodbath as the Praetorian guard try to kill Messalina.

Fury of Achilles is a really good semi-straight adaptation of The Iliad. Michalis Kakogiannis's Euripides Trilogy (Iphigenia, Elektra, The Trojan Women) are loving incredible and easily the most immersive and emotionally investing Trojan War related things I've seen.

And I'm going to keep yelling at all you loving shitheads to watch the gorgeous Odyssey adaptation Nostos: Il Ritorno until one of you does.

There's also that homoerotic claymation adaptation of The Iliad I posted a while ago.

I'm not doubting you, but somehow I don't remember this at all? It seems very out of place in the series, which overall is pretty good, especially as answer to the cop-out ideology of Gundam.

I just finished the Grand Budapest Hotel. The Courtisane au Chocolat makes for an intriguing metaphor for the film itself: I think Wes Anderson stands out because he doesn't half-rear end anything. His films have the mark of someone who thinks very, very hard about everything that shows up on the screen.

EDIT: Has Jeff Goldblum ever done an accent in his career? I find it strangely endearing that, for such a successful actor, he seems to follow that Mitchum mode of never straying that far from just acting like himself.

Thanks! And you'll be pleased to know I actually did watch Il Ritorno and it indeed owns. Its pace takes some getting used to, though. It felt like one of those movies like THX1138 where everything moves at half the speed that it should. But I can't blame that film for my own impatience.
