You can always use other TV software, even use WMP instead, but WMP is a lousy alternative and I haven't liked any of the others (even the goon-vaunted XBMC) since BeyondTV which was last updated like a decade ago.

The only thing you really need WMC for is if you have an Xbox 360 and want to stream your TV through the WMC 360 app, which to me is the ideal way to do it currently.

If you need an excuse to watch BoJack Horseman on Netflix, there's a scene in Episode 2 where Keith Olbermann spoofs his own blowhard personality, all the way down to "HAVE YOU NO SHAME, SIR?"

Show itself is good so far! I don't think every joke lands; there's one scene where a couple of lady dogs are like "I shouldn't eat chocolate because it could LITERALLY kill me, but I love it SOOOOOO much..." That's representative of what passes for comedy here: It's half animal puns, half broad Hollywood satire. But there are some drat good puns here, and the Hollywood stuff is at least somewhat couched in character. Worth watching if you need to kill a little more time before your shows come back.

Sometime during the 3rd episode, which ends on a dark satirization of how success and the Hollywood lifestyle irrevocably destroys certain people, and how individuals ignore their own part in this destruction by shifting blame to the nebulous "Society" (admittedly, none of this is subtle, but it is a comedy and this cast can sell it), a character tells BoJack that he's supposed to put in an appearance at "The Comedy Central Roast of Gloria Stei--" but is cut off by plot development.

The 4th episode opens up at The Comedy Central Roast of Gloria Steinem. The woman at the podium speaks in a glowing, educated voice: "Gloria Steinem, one of the leading lights of modern feminism. You will surely go down in the annals of history just as surely as Lisa Lampenelli will go down in the locker room of the Houston Rockets."

The crowd loves it. The dais is dying. Gloria Steinem looks like she wants to cut a bitch.

I'll accept "good, as opposed to great," but mediocre? Mediocre my balls.

This is about as subversive as Family Guy criticizing religion and praising weed. If anything it would be edgier to do the opposite and criticize the audience for mindlessly bashing celebrities and Just Worlding when bad things happen to them.

Family Guy criticizes religion by building an entire episode around how awesome its strawman atheist character is and praises weed with an overlong musical parody of "Me Old Bamboo." BoJack Horseman might tell you straight up what it's doing, but it does so after building characters that go at least a little beyond their so-called types and telling engaging stories about them. Subversive? Maybe not, but let's not break out the lazy Family Guy comparisons just yet.

And if NOTHING else, this show has absolutely zero interest in mindlessly bashing celebrities. EDIT: I'd like to amend that. It DOES bash celebrity culture, but that's not necessarily the first thing on its mind given efforts to shade the main character as a lonely, desperate individual, giving him more notes to play than just "LOL I'M AN AWESOME DOUCHEBAG LIVING IN A BUBBLE LIKE THE REST OF HOLLYWOOD."

You don't even have to build one specifically with HTPCs in mind anymore. Just buy one of these and plug it into your network, and presto, any PC or laptop on the same network is a TV. Since it's got three tuners, get one cablecard from your cable company and it's just as good as three cable boxes.

If you record a lot of TV or have enough people that would be watching more than 3 different channels at the same time, you can buy another one and daisy chain them to add more tuners to your network.

That'd be cool to have, but I'm pretty sure I can't use that with my provider.

It's a local fiber optic company. The fiber comes into the house and immediately goes to a box in the basement, and out of that box is a Cat5 cord that connects into their modem. Out of the out jacks on the modem is for their cable box/DVR, and the other goes to my router.

They don't technically charge for a cable box...unless you want HD channels and/or a DVR, then it's a monthly charge (I think $17 total for an HD DVR.)

At least there's no modem rental fee?

FYI for any Charter customers FXX appears to now be available even without owning the Sports Tier package. I'm not sure if they did this a while ago or if they did it in time for The Simpsons marathon but nonetheless you have the chance to watch the good seasons of the show while they're airing. No idea if this is just a Charter thing or if FX has been making deals with all the cable companies to give the channel easier access.

Sadly they haven't moved it down with the basic channels (yet?) so you still need the digital cable box to watch it.

This was the best episode of Married by far mostly because Paul Reiser and that's not something I ever thought I would say. He just seems to add a gel to the cast that it was lacking before.

Your the Worst is still the better show, plus the best depiction of one night stands on tv and the self-loathing that generally comes with it. Plus a better depiction of a marriage that's failing then even Married. My only problem is I've never meet a woman that's that ok with fetishes that quickly.

Yeah there's no need for a gaming PC in the living room, your MCE PC could even be a tiny fanless j1900 celeron. No fans no noise.

If only there was a Roku Windows Media Center extender, then you wouldn't have to interact with the box at all. It would just be sitting somewhere, recording shows.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. It's sad that they still charge $10 for what seems to be an un-updated MCE program (what no metro version?) but that's not a bad price at least.

What other TV software is there though? GB-PVR disappeared and Google bought SageTV and made it their own proprietary thing rather than something you can buy for your computer.

I guess there's still MythTV if you want to mess around with Linux... and deal with the pain of getting TV listings. It's probably still easiest to just use MCE since MS bought a TV listings company and will probably provide them basically forever.

Oh and thanks for letting me know about the WMC 360 app. If you have a 360 then it sounds like a good deal to just have the MCE box sitting headless somewhere and just use the 360 front end to do everything.

That's odd, I thought all providers in the US at least were required to offer cablecards if you ask for them. Does it not transition into regular coax cables once it gets to the box in your basement? Even FiOS had cablecards back when I had them years and years ago.
