Penny Dreadful was interesting until Billie Piper appeared on screen. At the best of times she is to acting as used toilet paper is to napkins, but in Penny Dreadful she is also doing a full on racist Oirish accent. Her performance is so bad the programme stops dead in its tracks, climbs out of the screen and shits on your chest.

In one episode Timothy Dalton says "chicanery" with all the seriousness in the world. It is great.

I didn't really know much about it besides the fact that it's supposed to be kind of a campy horror/Goth show, and I ended up really enjoying Penny Dreadful despite not really being into either of those things. It's got that same kind of borderline-smug confidence in its own ridiculousness that Sleepy Hollow has, except stepped up a notch in terms of production and style because it's on a premium channel. Also Eva Green is absolutely fantastic in it during the second half of the season and just goes for it, so it's probably worth watching just for her performance.

And to be fair Billie Piper's character is absolutely terrible, although luckily she doesn't have too many scenes.

The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers, stern and wild ones, and they had made her strong, but taught her much amiss.
Clapping Larry
The entire cast brings the crazy (even Josh Hartnett!). The first couple of episodes are okay, but then when Frankenstein makes his move; the floodgates of lunacy and scenery chewing are opened.

Can we talk about how fantastic Ken Burns' Roosevelt was? I'm still at the end of the fifth episode, but I've been holding off until the weekend because once I start one episode I blink and its six hours later and I know a shitload about the Square Deal. These people were amazing.

EDIT: Ugh Who talk.

Billie piper is a capable actress who was saddled with a lovely character on doctor who from an oft-times lovely showrunner

Any other opinion conflates the difference between a bad character and a bad actress

She wasn't great on the first season, admittedly, often in her first season she looked like she was totally lost onscreen

But even at her worst she was just very wooden, not you know

Bad

Anyways that's the True Opinion on Billie piper from dw

Watch Penny Dreadful for the Eva Green episodes, but don't spend $30 on it. I'd recommend holding off for a Black Friday/Season 2 sale if you don't mind waiting.

It was really fantastic. I loved how they were able to effortlessly balance the huge impact the Roosevelts had on history while making their private lives just as compelling. It's probably Burns' best documentary.

I never minded her on Who but on Penny Dreadful she's a prostitute with a heart of gold, a terminal illness, and a horrific accent. In a show full of ridiculous, scenery-chewing characters out of classic horror she's at best boring, and at worst actively annoying.

I'm watching How to Get Away with Murder and something about the opening scene in the lecture hall bothered me. The student who gets called on but isn't prepared, he says he didn't get the emailed assignment, but Viola Davis goes up to him and says "I deal with liars for a living so you'll have to try harder if you want to fool me", except the student then explains he just got into the school so he really didn't get the emailed assignment, which means Viola Davis is already proven to be a bad lie detector.

The whole "I can tell when you're lying because <dumb made-up reason> :smug:" thing is such a dumb TV/movie cliche. It's like a writing shortcut for having to actually come up with something interesting to happen. "Hey how should we resolve this situation we came up with? I know, we'll just have the protagonist blindly declare that he knows the antagonist is lying! Because he can read his face! Awesome, next scene."

Lazy writing for sure.

When Wesley was first in his bedroom, deliberating how to come up with a defense, I totally called that they should attack the 1st assistant saying she saw the pill on the 2nd assistant's desk. :smug:
