The ticket prices for the USGP at Indianapolis was great. IIRC $50 got you a 3-day GA pass. And the grandstand tickets were very reasonable too.

Yeah but if you work out how many cars you got to see for the price of that ticket it's probably a worse deal.

If I ever go to a GP right now it would have to be Canada. Cheaper for me to get to as I live in the Boston metro area, at cheapest it's a $100/8hr bus ride compared to $300 for a flight to Austin, the next cheapest.

Dicks, I need to spend almost a grand on flights and accommodation before I'm even in a country with a GP

A grandstand seat at COTA will cost you more than $500. GA ticket for WEC? That lets you sit in any grandstand (and into the paddock)? $75.

Ghost of Mussolini posted:What's truly sad about the Russian GP is that if there is one country right now willing and able to pony up a lot of land and money to build some sort of extravagant circuit it would be Russia. It's not like cost is an issue for Putin, but of all the places to build this dumb thing they just had to make them drive around the olympic stadium. Giving birth to the dullest track in can remember in ages, as others have said, its worse than Valencia or India or whatever. But in historic terms, is this worse than the Phoenix street course, or the Ceasar's Palace GP? The reason the grand prix is in Sochi is the same reason the winter olympics were in Sochi, which is essentially that Sochi is Putin's favourite resort. While we're doing silly season driver change predictions, I reckon Alonso/Maldonado at Lotus, Raikonnen/Vettel at Ferrari, Button/Magnussen at McLaren with Grosjean going to either Force India or Sauber because Lotus need the Maldonado cash. Although when they balance the books they might find out he's broken more than he's paid for, which could conceivably change things somewhat.

Yes, in my opinion, because you can also find room for a cooler full of beer and sandwiches, and you can have a few beers before you go inside in the morning, leave for lunch (Fri and Sat) and have a beer and a sandwich for lunch, and then instead of fighting traffic leaving the race, you just break out some camp chairs, and keep drinking and eating sandwiches.

Well, Renault in all it's incarnations has traditionally either been a championship contender when they have their poo poo together or very very poor. It is important to note that today's Lotus are not Senna's Lotus, they are Renault in a Lotus suit. This years Renault engine is shockingly crock of poo poo in every car, add in Lotus' money woes and you get what we are seeing now. Honda is a unknown quantity, but, we know that when Lotus had the same good engine as red bull they were easily able to get a driver on the podium, just not the top step. Lotus is getting the Merc engine, this engine is known to be awesome. If they are able to repeat what they did a few years ago and get some money to pay staff then they could be 2nd in the championship, with the right drivers. So, this is why I think that Alonso to Lotus for a year isn't out of the realms of possibility if he can't get in a merc till 2016, especially when you add in Flavio's connection to both the team and Genii who are one of the main owners.

So the strategy group voted to unfreeze engines next year, but the way the group works gets stupider as you read this explanation, including Lotus voting against engine unfreezing (?!)quote:The Strategy Group, which is compromised of six teams, Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt, requires only a majority vote for ideas to go forward. It’s understood that in today’s meeting that Ecclestone, Todt, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull voted for the unfreeze, and Mercedes, Lotus and Williams opposed it. As Ecclestone and Todt have six votes each, the outcome was presumably 15-3 in favour

Oh I just assumed Lotus would have a million year agreement with Renault or something. They say the F1 Commission can veto it (which I guess includes Mercedes) but good luck trying to figure out who is on the 2014 commission.

Haha, Renault is poo poo:quote:Renault has also endured a significant deficit to Mercedes under the first year of F1's new V6 turbo hybrid engine rules, but Renault Sport F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul is unsure whether the French manufacturer would benefit from a relaxation of the engine freeze. Translation: we're not willing to allocate the resources required to beat Mercedes or even produce a decent engine. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Red Bull Honda 2016.

Dont forget, the renault was considered the weakest of the V8's after honda left, and they needed the FIA to bail them out by un-freezing the engine formula just for them in 2008. The next season saw vettel win his first race in a renault red bull, and the rest is history Last time they waited 3 years to give up and beg bernie for a mulligan. Its pretty sad this year that they need to do it only a few months into a new formula.
