there's a gigantic apartment complex in a prime shenzhen real estate area about 15 minutes away from me that's been completely vacant since it was built because it was intended for government workers, but a lot of local people thought it was too luxurious looking for civil servants, so the government said "ok fine, nobody gets to live there then"

on one hand i agree that the shopping center as a parking lot surrounded by stores is grossly aesthetically offensive but on the other hand if i only want to get to one store, having to park in the mall parking lot and waste a bunch of time going through the mall to get there can be annoying

I am driver, only on weekends. I have a good 9-5 job where it only take me 10-15 minutes to get to work, about 8 miles away. I have to be honest - if I lived in one the cities that had under $1/mile rate cuts, I would get rid of one of my 2 cars that my wife & I have. It would be cheaper to commute via uberX than to pay for the payment, insurance and upkeep that I incur just for the convenience that I get for driving myself to work. I can double down on this theory since I can also work from home on an as-needed basis. This is only in theory though, not my specific situation. Both of our cars are paid off. But for example if the rates stayed this low, and it came time to replace one of the cars, I would just sell it and go uberX. and a reply People have already done this. I once got a ping 10 minutes out in the suburbs and I thought great, somebody who wants to go to the city or the airport, so this should be a pretty good trip. When I picked him, he was just going 0.5 miles to the grade school for parent/teacher conferences. While in the car, he was on the phone with someone else telling whoever he was talking to that he was using an Uber right now because his wife had the car and they decided to use Uber instead of getting a 2nd car and would continue to do so until using Uber became more expensive then a monthly car and insurance payment. After the 0.5 mile trip min fare ride, he exited the vehicle without tipping. So a 10 minute drive out of the city and facing another 10 minute drive without a fare to get back in it, I spent 40 minutes of my time to drive this asshat 0.5 miles for $3.80 gross and no tip. At the end of the trip I rated him 2 stars to warn other drivers what they are getting themselves into if they accept his fare. But just like they usually do when you rate a rider low, I am sure Uber removed that rating from his record.
