No idea, I'm a PM. I just said "here's what I need, make it happen".

Also: because I'm not terrible I gave them information on how we need it to scale so they don't need to get 24Tbps online to start, they can ramp up to that based on usage patterns.

Oh yea, you can only access it from the internal network, so if you're not in a corporate location, you have to connect over a VPN, which requires a completely different username, password, and RSA token.

It pulls a random admin account from a pool that have the access rights you should have, for the server group you need to administrate. And the randomly generated passwords are only good for up to six hours.

Using DWDM you can probably get 100 GBps over like 400-600km from a quick glance at some optical gear manufacturers cutsheets.

The biggest problem is it's still a web interface. It's slow and the design cues were taken straight from an AOL CD offering 40 FREE HOURS A MONTH! It seriously takes half a dozen full page loads to actually get a password. When it works properly. In once instance, it took me almost half an hour to get an account last week.

Ever had a customer freak out over the timing of a maintenance window for work they themselves scheduled and are performing? We have a customer that has private lines running over fiber that they, coincidentally, are the vendor for. Customer's repair department sent us a maintenance notification that the fiber would be down for a brief window (minutes) in a few days for a card replacement, so we sent a courtesy notification to their change management department that half of a redundant link pair would be down because of the fiber work (so no service impact).

They freaked out, rejecting the maintenance and demanded we work with our vendor (them) to postpone so that they had more notice and to reschedule for a later time*. When we explained that they were the ones doing the maintenance, they seriously expected us to escalate with their department doing the work (as we were the customer) to try to get it postponed. We basically told them to gently caress off and figure it out internally if they cared.

Oh absolutely to both of your comments (and great reference!). I am not the kind of person who says "I'm tired today" lightly - I know a lot of people use it as basically a conversation starter, but I think I've said it twice in the last five years. I'm no more or less tired than other people, I just think it's a stupid thing to say. ("Start exercising and eating healthy, you tired piece of poo poo" is NOT a great conversation starter, by the way). That being said, I remember where I was standing and to whom I was talking when I made that fatal mistake. Hey Stripe, how ya doing? Man, I'm freakin tired today. Oh really how much sleep did you get last night?

It's at that point in the conversation that you're basically looking for something to light on fire so you can make your exit, because you know exactly what's following your answer no matter what you say.

It feels like if I did even a fraction of the poo poo I do at this place I would be making 3-4 times as much I really feel like the entire MSP system is built to take advantage of guys like me to give customers service that they aren't paying nearly enough for(but could afford)

As long as you have a good exit strategy, and enough fodder for the resume that you can bail, take a month or two to misplace the postal uniform and find a better job, then it can be really rewarding to get one of those 'these are your concrete lined running shoes, and there is the bottom of the pool we need cleaned, go nuts' type jobs.

Just make sure that when you say "I did all these things" you can prove it, and that your old manager won't lie to your new boss's face about who actually did the work.
