As I approached there was someone already there and he said the machine just took $300 cash and crashed without giving him his bitcoin. I HOPE he got it resolved, and I certainly hope this was the exception not the rule. Not a good for bitcoin PR anyway!

so these wallets are being generated browser-side? and before they even sync up to the cloud they are able to make transactions? how can the server make transactions on a private key that hasn't been given to it by the client yet?

They had the private key of the source, but the private key of the destination was not generated, not saved, invalid, saved then corrupted, or just flat out stolen by an admin
