Pfft continuity error, it should be ecto-2.

Unless the real ecto-1 was totaled and they kept the plate.

I was hoping the new movie would be in a new city though. And use a mid-90's beater, like one of the melty looking Taurus wagons.

I would contend that the FTO does, in fact, suck arse because it has the complexity of a larger car with none of the benefits. The starion is good but very flawed (we can blame Chrysler for that though).

The question then is "WHY?" and I don't have the answer.

Different manifolds for FWD/RWD applications?

Yeah some of that list is really reaching. Mitsubishi really haven't made all that many great cars... The Galants and Evos are pretty much the best things they've done.

Holden decided to put the battery behind the rear wheel arch on the VE series (or at least the wagon). Which was fun when I needed a jump one day. Car was in garage, so I thought I was lucky that I could jump from the back. Nope, the rear hatch is electric ONLY so had to snake jump leads through the rear doors.

There's no manual cable release for the frunk on a Porsche Boxster/Cayman either. So if the battery dies, you use this little wire tool (that is hopefully still attached to the fuse box cover) to extend a terminal in the fuse box in the driver's footwell that you attach the positive jump lead to, while grounding the negative lead to the door hinge. This will theoretically activate the solenoid that opens the frunk where the battery is held that will subsequently need a jump. If your Front Control Module shits the bed (as they sometimes do when you buff the car or for other random class-action-lawsuit reasons), you will have to remove the front bumper cover and pull the solenoid cable with your bare hands like a loving animal.

There's also no easy way to get a key out of the ignition of a 997-era 911 with a dead battery, either, as the release mechanism is electronic for no good loving reason. You are supposed to be able to remove a plastic piece from the steering column and insert a thin metal rod (supplied in the glove box) into a specific hole and jimmy it loose, but I had absolutely zero luck with that and had to use a trickle charger to eventually give the battery enough juice to pull the key free.

Also: automatic cars that can't be pushed/dragged onto a tow truck when dead, like the prius, because there's no mechanical interlock to overcome to stick it in neutral and the front wheels are always locked.. The entire shift system is electronic (because it isn't really a 'transmission' in the traditional sense, but it still has a parking pawl!) and if you can't power up the 12V system of the car, you can't get neutral. Ditto if you take the battery out or w/e. There is no physical way to disengage the parking pawl AFAIK. Ditto steering lock. Did you break down with the wheel pointed left? Tough poo poo!

Oh, and there is no starter motor - if the hybrid system is dead and unable to supply power to the motor-generators, there's no way of turning the engine over because they do the job of a starter and the engine isn't directly connected to the wheels. Dashing any hope of getting it running so it just keeps the ICE going continuously.

I assume luxury cars with stalk mounted selectors and such are in the same boat.

Sorry, but even a Prius can be dragged onto a tow truck. People who work in repo would be out of a job if you couldn't tow a car simply because the wheels are locked.

It's a pain in the rear end to unload them if it's on a flatbed with locked wheels, but nothing a winch can't fix. I used to work at a place where the parking lot was often used as parking for events at a nearby stadium (despite 8 or so "we'll tow your car" signs around the building, on top of someone watching the lot and telling you "hey, you can't park here, unless you want to get towed"), and the only thing that would stop a tow was a RWD vehicle parked with the wheels turned as far as they could go (and even then, only if there was a car next to it and it was parked head-in).

stuxracer posted:

The car will give roughly 0.1% of a gently caress. Seriously, hundreds of thousands of cars get repo'd every year in this exact scenario. The only damage that usually happens will happen when the driver takes off with it around the corner, prior to properly loading the car (and it's usually limited to flat spots on the tires). Once they're around the corner they'll hook it up properly if they value their insurance.

I like tech as much as the next guy but I'd prefer a car I can at least push around without a tow truck if it's broken down. If there were some way of mechanically overriding this stuff, however awkward and terrible, it'd be better than just having nothing at all.

The older mazda/nissan style smart key system where they have an actual slot you can put a mechanical key into to disable the steering lock and start the car 'manually' is a good one but has gone out of fashion in favour of buttons with entirely electric steering locks.

If it doesn't do a better job (possibly even a worse job), is more complicated, and breaks more easily, it's not worth having. Electronic handbrakes, for example. Electronic push-button transfer box selection instead of a lever for 4x4s might be another.

This isn't Luddite thinking, it's annoyance at pointless overcomplication.

That's not even a hole. Every friggin manhole cover in this city looks like that. If you're driving down Tower Rd in the right lane, EVERY GOD drat 50 FOOT there is a manhole that is 3 inches lower than the road.

Also, if you can't push start your car when the battery is dead you're doing it wrong.

The Starion had no Chrysler involvement. The Astron is it's major weakness. Outside of the Evolution it is their best performance car. I also should put an asterisk beside both the Mirage/Colt and Galant because both were mediocre aside from the performance versions.

That reminded me... Last year there was an intersection near my apartment that developed a bit of a sinkhole in the left turn lane. Maybe a foot and a half wide, but like 3 feet deep. An enterprising citizen put a plush hot pink chair (kind of looked like a dining room chair) in the hole to keep people from losing a wheel. You could see the top half of the chair back popping out of the crater.

Casual google search seems to indicate it's a total reboot of the franchise.

While I kind of like their idea of using a hearse Ecto 1 will always be a 50s Cadillac ambulance to me.

As to why a reboot...you may have missed the memo but Hollywood is apparently completely out of ideas and are left with recycling old movies.

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

I just don't see why Ghostbusters had to be recycled. The guys who made the movie had the hooks for sequels written into the script 30 years ago. It would have been trivial to put movies in other cities and rehash the "mysterious evil threatens to destroy iconic city" plot a million times or until people stopped buying tickets.

Perhaps this is why I am not a hollywood exec, I just can't see the big picture.
