For the record, Thai curry + white rice is superior to pasta, especially if you're carb depleted when you eat eat. Zoom! But you must have a stomach that can accept and contain Thai food 2-3 hours before exercise.

gingerbread waffle with orange infused butter + bacon and eggs and coffee in the morn, then a beer before the game, then beer after in the locker room (I mean, we're called The Growlers after all ), then sushi has been the norm afterward the game lately. Ain't complaining about that ritual one bit. edit: D C posted:No joke I'm gonna work on that 'strut' celly so I can bust it out during the winter season. I knock back a shot of vodka in the car and listen to power metal before games. That's the only nutrition I need.

xzzy posted:Think it was this one: Hahahaha! If I celebrate at all, it's always the "holster my stick" celebration but that strut really completes the effect. Day 4 of Hockey Week is in the books and I am dying. Four hours on the ice at camp (two in the morning, two in the afternoon), working on stops, stickhandling, passing, and shooting. I got to see some tape review of my own starting and stopping, and it was pretty humbling, but at least I know what to work on. In between ice sessions, there were a few "class" sessions. The aforementioned tape review, a "sniper seminar" by the goalie coach teaching shooters the things all beer league goalies do and how to beat them, and a basic defensive positioning and skills "chalk talk" that focused on three fundamentals: 1) protect the inside of the ice 2) stop listening when people tell you to always keep two hands on your stick 3) show people to their backhand if you can. I liked this session much better than the first day, since it wasn't working on remedial skating fundamentals that I'm terrible at, but instead stick and puck skills that I'm slightly less terrible at. One thing this camp has taught me is that a lot of the advice veteran beer leaguers I play with give isn't always the best. The coaches recommended not playing tight to your point man as a winger, but giving a little space when the puck was away from them and using good positioning to force the dman to do something worthless if he gets possession. They also poo-poo'd keeping two hands on your stick at all times, which people had yelled at me a lot to do last year until I made it a habit. Now I've got to get used to using a one-handed stick to take away ice and options from the opposing puck carrier. After a brief three hour break, I then had a league game tonight. Very strange game. I had very little energy after so much skating earlier in the day, but I still managed to bag a hat trick. And we still managed to lose 11-5. I'll just be over here lying on the floor dying.

I take everything I hear in beer league with a grain of salt, but in the D league I play in, we did better when wingers covered the point men tighter in the D zone. Most of the time it was absolute chaos anyway, so we basically split everyone in to corners in the D zone and told them to just stick to their men. It seemed to work better after the shitshow that was games 1 and 2.

People yelling to beginners to keep 2 hands on the stick is mostly about beginners trying to lean-and-reach in situations where you will do better if you step in with more leverage on the stick. If you're playing vs. another beginner who is also lean-and-reaching it'll work out fine (I mean, one of you will bump the puck in a direction and then eventually someone from one of the teams will pick it up), but once you're playing with people who skate to the puck and control their stick a little bit you'll lose out.

Yeah, it's basically the same as "keep your stick on the ice." Generally you want to as a rule but there are exceptions. Much more so with one hand on your stick.

RE: 2 hands on the stick, I had a cool play the other night. I was on the forecheck, going left to right across their blue line as their D had the puck down at the circle. I saw he was going to flip it cross-ice, so I put my stick out behind me, about waist high. The puck hit the blade of my stick, knocking it down and giving my team a quick breakaway. We didn't score, but I sure looked like a genius for a few seconds. We lost 3-0, but we had 6 skaters and they had 9, so it was a sloppy game overall. All 3 goals came in the first 3 minutes of the third period, too, so it wasn't that bad. At least I got plenty of ice time!

I got the stink 100% out of my gear. It's now just a smell. Unfortunately my broke rear end won't be able to re-stinkify it all for a while till I find another job and/or knock my debt down to a reasonable level. Why couldn't I just enjoy a cheap sport like basketball or soccer.

So Pure Hockey was having their annual tent sale this weekend, with 25% off the entire store, and I somehow managed to score the new CCM Jetspeed 300 skates for $150 less than normal price. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't have been allowed, but I'm pretty satisfied with the score. I haven't skated in them yet, but the fit already feels incredible. Coming from a pair of Bauer Vapors, the fit is pretty similar, and worth looking at for anyone wearing Vapors looking for another option.

My wife just accepted a job transfer to Seattle from Chicago. We should be out there by the end of August or early september and I'll be looking to play hockey from day 1 so I wouldn't mind meeting up with some Seattle goons at some point.

Over the weekend, one of the coaches for the instructional league I play in had his house burned to the ground, lost everything. The organizer of the league sent out a mail Sunday morning informing people and asking if anyone had old hockey gear they could donate so he would be able to get back to work. By afternoon someone had offered to buy him all new gear, someone else was willing to loan him a car, a big envelope of cash had been filled to help him out, and a couple boxes of clothes so he could have something to wear. So that's pretty cool, hockey players own. Usually. That same morning our game was cut short because a few dudes were getting nasty after some sketchy no-calls. Turned into lots of shouting and dudes taking runs at each other. Eventually the coaches told everyone to get the gently caress off the ice and go home with about 12 minutes left to play. No punches were thrown but the league has a pretty low threshold for shenanigans so once it gets to the point of cussing at refs and shoving after the whistle they cut things off.
