All of DBKai has been translated. The final episode actually aired in June, so it's not that long over with. It cut the show down from 291 episodes to 159, so it's a slightly easier prospect to get into. It's basically the definitive version of the show (for now, anyway), so unless you have any nostalgia for the filler, head straight for that.

Oh, and just so no one misses it :goku:THERE'S AN UPDATE ON THE END OF THE LAST PAGE:goku:

There's a wedding dress designer called "ChiChi", so that would probably clog the results a bit.

Appending "Dragonball" as a search term brings more relevant results.

Seeing as we saw Baba this update I feel the need to point out that one of her fighting champions is Count Dracula, who is a kick boxer.

He gets his rear end kicked by Puar. (Also some native American Kid iirc)

There was also an Invisible Man, who Yamcha (yeah) was able to beat after Krillin sprayed him with Roshi's anime nosebleedTOMATO JUICE.

Oooooh boy you're here. So, this is another anime-only bit of content. Goku and Chi-chi's wedding is never seen in the manga, and any interactions before you see them again several years later are non-existent due to Toriyama's self-admitted inability and fear of writing romances.

This entire plot thread exists to give Goku and Chi-chi's SOMETHING beyond "we married now" like what happened in the manga. And in all honesty, it ends up rather sweet in the end. The game glosses over quite a bit of what happens and jumps right to the end of it all, sadly, but it makes a bit of sense from that perspective. At the same time, there is a long, multi-episode quest Goku and Chi-chi go through to find the Bansho Fan, taking them to places like: Oolong's home village, filled with pig people just like him; an encounter with Pilaf and goons again while trying to save a fire-eating giant bird; a mountain that throws hissy hits about women for no clearly discernible reason (basically, "Mt. MRA"); and finally leading up to what happened in the update here. All of this exists to give Goku and Chi-chi some time to actually interact as, well, a couple, and it honestly works quite well. You see their personalities mesh fairly well, and it ends up feeling less abrupt overall. It also serves as a nice little ending adventure to "Dragon Ball" proper.

But yeah... that's a lot of poo poo to shift through. If you forget about Sun Goku, Nimbus, the Pole, and every other reference, you can tell Journey to the West was the basis on Dragon Ball because it is full of loving padding.

Try reading that, and you'll look back fondly on DBZ's padding of two guys hovering and screaming and powering up for a couple episodes.

Things to watch.

This is a good list, but I feel the need to add a couple more things:

1) The History of Trunks special. Kai actually skips it despite being canon, which is terrible because that's actually really good and important for Trunks' characterization.
2) Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return. An OVA, sadly not dubbed. It is canon (as a character that only appears in it is mentioned in BoG). Not particularly important, but fun and worth the watch.
3) Bardock: The Father of Goku. Kai uses some of its scenes in its first episode, but it's still worth a full watch. It should be noted, though, that Toriyama retconned it out of existance with Dragon Ball Minus.
4) Despite the previous point, do NOT watch Episode of Bardock. It makes no sense and it is terrible. Just know that Bardock's a fan favourite so he gets every Super Saiyan form ever and the original needed a special to its own for some reason. A bad special.

Never mind that our main character is marrying Chi Chi, his daughter, who presumably could get a load of dough from him if she wanted to.

It should be noted that this is canonically how Goku's family survives despite none of them ever attempting to have a job. And, by Super, Ox-King is absolutely broke thanks to it. "The greatest son-in-law a king could ever hope for" indeed...

Well it's because every time Goku wins the loving world martial arts tournament he gives away the money or the arena gets destroyed or something.

They finally fix it in Super when Mr. Satan gives Goku all the prize money from the most recent tournament because he saved the world. And he had to convince Goku to take it because he was like "uhhh I dunno about that..."

No wonder Chi Chi is pissed off all the time. But you can't really blame Goku, he barely understands what money is.

It really does oddly works as a (presumably) unintended sendoff to the 'Dragonball' half of the series in terms of style and tone. After two story arcs (or arguably one really long one) about the Demon King Piccolo and trying to save the world from him in what would ultimately become the hallmark of the series thereafter, you get a story that's more about Goku exploring Dragonball's Earth, and helping one of his friends through a more personal predicament. Its filler, sure, but its the kind of filler that ultimately works to the story's benefit, rather than just padding out airtime because oh god Toriyama hasn't written the next chapter yet.

Actually thinking about it, I think this is technically adult Goku's only traditional 'Dragonball' adventure, due to the skip to Z.

This was a pretty neat character examination. I might go a step further and say that thematically speaking she's also a vehicle for the readers/viewers in a sense. Like the reader, she cares about Goku and Gohan, and second-guesses their sometimes boneheaded ideas in the same way we might. Same with Bulma saying why not kill Dr. Gero instead of fighting the Androids, they're characters who can have more rational ideas that help to explain why the other characters act irrationally at times or why the plot goes against certain frames of logic.

Because how you dress doesn't reflect on how you ARE. Krillin and Roshi can't ride it because they're perverts, same as Bulma, but Chi-Chi never has thoughts like that, neither does Goku, the two of them are pure of mind and heart. Goku is a violent SoB who really only cares about fighting, but his reasons for fighting are pure (for the sake of fighting)

Though note, the reason Goku married Chi-Chi out of universe? Toriyama really didn't like drawing her but didn't want to just drop her so "If I marry her to Goku I have to draw her."

I know it sounds weird, but yes.

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/son-goku-densetsu-toriyama-x-nakatsuru/

Who do you prefer: Bulma or Chi-Chi?
Toriyama:
To be honest, I’m really not fond of Chi-Chi as a character. (laughs) In the middle of the comic, I started to think, “I don’t want to draw her anymore,” and, sort of as a way of spiting myself, I decided, “you’ll have to draw her if she gets married to Goku, so marry them off!” So, I drew her as a kind of punishment. (laughs)
Nakatsuru:
So that was your reason behind it! (laughs)

Toriyama:
The women I draw all have the same sort of personality. I can’t draw gentle girls; I only know how to draw ones who are strong-willed.

Probably not, but maybe. Vegeta did a lot of evil in the past, it's the same reason when he died he didn't get to keep his body, I think to be 'pure' you must never have been 'tainted'

Goten can also ride the Nimbus, so it's a characteristic of the Son family to just have that humble existence. Keep in mind that Upa, Launch in her 'good' personality, Uub and an unnamed mermaid and muscular woman could all ride the Nimbus.

Bulma couldn't, Trunks could (In the opening of a video game), Krillin couldn't, Master Roshi couldn't.

I think the main difference between Goku and Vegeta would be Pride.

EDIT: In the manga and japanese dub, Roshi intended to give Goku the Immortal Phoenix who bestows Immortality to Goku before being informed that, ironically, it had died due to eating tainted bird seed. So instead he gave him the Nimbus. This was for finding and bringing back his Turtle for the record.

I'm going to say "yes," because the requirements for becoming a Super Saiyan were "a calm, pure heart, awoken by anger." Goku had a calm, pure heart (because he's simple and pure and nice) awoken by the anger of seeing Krillin senselessly murdered. Vegeta had a calm, pure (evil) heart awoken by the anger of playing second fiddle to a cretin.
