Agreed. My straight friends agree with me on feminist issues 9/10 times, but one of my precious few gay friends...ugh. We have to stay on Drag Race or work, because anything other than that turns into him :smug:ing about what a silly feminazi I am, and how equality is a myth and me trying to resist the urge to break something sturdy over his head.

This should go without saying but your one friend doesn't represent all gay men generally.

I wouldn't say that gay men tend to be misogynists, so much as misogyny tends to be a thing with men in general and gay men are often stereotyped as being friendlier to women than straight men are.

when I read that post about "gay men in general tend to be enormous misogynists" it looked like a thinly veiled troll post that nailed a perfectly inconvenient imaginary demographic. But now you're just going all out. It would be hilarious to see how people would react if some poll actually showed anything like that (gay men hate women more than straight men) being real but it's obviously not the case.

This ended up in my college newspaper.

quote:

Protests against debt, fees and tuition are taking place across the country. As a no-student-loan-debt alumnus of Purdue, I would like to offer some advice.

1. The Obama administration wiped out all competition in student loans. You can’t get one except from the government now. So, insist on the recreation of a wide range of competitive private student loan options.

When there’s a monopoly, the monopolist plays the tune and you dance. When there’s competition, you can leave if you don’t like the music.

2. Get a degree that gives you skills which your fellow man needs. Hyphenated-studies or political-grievance ranting is cute for 10 minutes in college. After that, no one cares.

Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computers, can be supplemented by topical courses you like to think about. Education is getting a bad name as useless because so many useless degrees in the non-tech subject areas gobble up 100 grand and leave you as a barista with some offended attitude.

3. Biblical values make you strong, independent, capable and allow you to overcome. Socialist values make a you weak, dependent crybaby who has to rant and rave to beg morsels from those who have jobs.

4. Garbage in, garbage out. If you take fluff for four years at Purdue, instead of STEMC, you’ll have a life of debt, protesting, begging, and being a barista.

If you decide that doing the hard degree now for a short four years is worthwhile, you’ll have a lifetime debt free, in charge, and setting the course for your own life rather than having the nanny-state set it for you.

Four years of partying or 60 years of wealth. It’s up to you.

Also they are objectively wrong, you can get private student loans from banks. Sometimes people either can't get enough from their federal loans, or they run over maximum hours, or they gently caress things up and can't get federal loans until their grades are back out of the toilet. As far as I know, every major bank offers private student loans.

This probably belongs more in the rwm thread but I legit find how we program kids with the pledge really loving bad and creepy. It's very minitru-like. It's one thing for an adult to voluntarily utter a pledge of allegiance but forcibly indoctrinating a child to repeat it every morning is super hosed up and an entirely different matter.

Do you remember looking around at other kids and seeing blank eyes and blank faces during the pledge? Do you remember how everyone said it exactly the same and put no thought or emotion behind it? We're not building robots for christ's sake. We're (supposed) to be teaching those little people to think critically.

I never had an issue saying it as a kid and surely wouldn't as an adult either if the opportunity presented itself but I've come to be really wary of straight up brainwashing and disapprove of doing it to kids.

Also it was originally accompanied by the Bellamy Salute, which we stopped because it looked a little too close to what became the Nazi salute.

At my school no one really took the Pledge of Allegiance seriously, and we barely even understood the words. I remember in elementary school thinking it went "...and to the republic for witchid stands..." We would recite it in a weird singsong voice, and we generally saw patriotism as tacky. (But this was in the late 80s and early 90s, so needless to say things have changed.) Regardless, having kids say a "Pledge of Allegiance" they don't even understand is really loving weird. There was definitely a substantial gap between when we started saying the pledge and when we had any idea what a "republic" is.

Forcing kids to recite a pledge that they are totally uninterested in to the point it becomes reflexive: not creepy or bad at all!

It's good to hear a lot of schools don't do this anymore. My public school in the 80s sure as hell had us stand and psuedo-nazi-rally every morning.
