Don't spend any money until you consider how much you actually want to invest into this game.

You'll probably run into a pretty big wall soon of deciding to get more variety or to squeeze more output from your KGC.
Buying 2 variants and then DHS/Endo while stripping the engine/weapons from your other one to hit Basic Masteries.
Then that unlocks Elite masteries which luckily you don't need to max all 3 in order to unlock the Module mastery unlock.
Mastery of weapons is going to take a ton of GXP as well as the general modules like Seismic Sensor, Zoom, Radar Deprivation, and the weapon ones.

However, if you go the alternate route of trying another chassis, make sure you pick one of the Mastery Bundles. You get 1 normal, 1 champion, 1 hero, 3 mech bays, 30 day premium at a huge huge discount.
Mastery Bundles are excellent use of MC due to the huge discounts.

I grinded this out with the Arctic Cheetah and maxed all the skills on 3 of them, unlocking the module on one. Can I just sell the other 2 now without losing any of the skill bonuses (I needs me that mech bay space) or will that kill them?

If by 'maxed' you mean, mastered then yeah you can sell them. You don't actually need to master them at all and only need to elite them if it's your first chassis of that weight class.

If anyone in WoL wants to do a few games of CW this evening (US) I could be down, we would need around 10 birds to help lessen the queue times, 12 is preferable because if there are baddies in the queue you will get near instant matches.

Anywho, 3-5 matches and even if you are blind you should be able to unlock the first two loyalty tiers and get a sweet and free 'mechbay.

e: Don't worry about dropdecks, a mix of the trials is ok especially if we have 12 because communication is KEY and teamwork is OP, plus we probably won't be fighting clans.

That's what I thought, it seemed like he was implying it was somehow different.

Also, there is a huge difference between an elited mech and one that only has the basic masteries. that 2x multiplier is huge.

It's far less than it used to be though since the baseline for basic was nerfed in the recent balance pass. Which was a good thing to stop fresh mech chassis being completely worthless against anything until post skill grind.

Mastery vs elite doesn't do a thing other than unlock that extra mech/weapon module slot. Which is nice to have.

Hey, recommend me some mechs to move into. I've elited most things I have from back when I played.

I have:
Loads of Atlas -df, 7k, rs and sl
Cataphracts: muromets, 3d, 4x
Stalker 5s
Treb:
Lights: Spider 5d, Jenner 7f, raven 3l

So far I like playing with mediums. I've had a lot of fun with moderately fast trebuches, escorting goons and hunting lights.
cataphracts are okay. Seem to die too easily even with max armor. Can't help but want a better option in that department.

So far:
I'm going to sell my cataphracts back once the muromets has the module slot.
Stalker may go away as well.(builds worth using post ghost-heat and stuff would be helpful)
I want to consolidate my lights into one model that's all around useful. ECM is a plus for group play. The ones I have really don't seem to be that good any more. I was looking at other models to buy to work on eliting them out, and the answer ended up being 'gently caress that, work on funner stuff, ditch them all.'

Firestarters and Arctic Cheetas have already been brought to my attention: Which first? Any particular model to look at?

Could use suggestions on fun mediums and heavies. Shadow Hawk/Cat(i forget which is the 'good' one constantly) and Thunderbolt?

Assaults: I kind of miss my awesomes. I'm willing to try a banshee. I like my atlases, a lighter assault to fall back on might be fun to experiment with. WOuld be willing to try a banshee. Are highlanders, victors and zeus's any good or junk?

Help me decide what mechs to buy next. I can afford to experiment and find something I like, 20m cbills to work with.

You don't, right? Because if you're in 3rd person you're doing it waaaaaay wrong.

The way I see it there are two good ways to spend MC:

1) buy mech bays.

2) if you're having fun and you want to cut the grind for your 3 chassis of a mech you like down a bunch, buy a month of premium. By the time you run that you you'll probably be a bit bored but you'll have at least 3 mechs of your chosen type in good builds and be well on your way to skilling them up. As a "bonus" you'll have extra MC after you buy your premium which means you can:

Is this a recent change? I've played off and on since closed beta and I don't remember ever needing to elite other variants to master any single one.

Re: Lights:

Arctic Cheetah is good and fun with 6x SPL. I'm by no means a great pilot and I've been cursed out in mumble for doing amazing things with the 6xSPL build.

Firestarter is best played similar to the Cheetah, 6xSPL. Firestarter can't tank nearly as well, but I would recommend playing that before the Cheetah because the lack of ECM and survivability force you to be more clever/cautious. Once you've mastered Firestarters, Cheetahs are easy mode because you're used to being without ECM. Overall, if you can get away with something in a Firestarter, you can get away with it in a Cheetah. That's personal preference though.

Ravens are decent, if you prefer sitting back and sniping the 3L is a great choice, although Ravens can do close range fighting as well. Huginn is fun missile vomit but it's a very different mechanic than the more common energy lights.

No, to unlock the ability to buy elite skills you need to basic out three variants of the same mech.

To unlock the ability to buy the master skill (which gives you an extra module slot only) you need to elite three mechs of the same weight class. They don't have to be variants of the same mech. i.e. if you want to master your Atlas and have previously mastered your Awesome you only need to basic out the two Atlas chassis that you don't want to keep, you don't have to elite them.
