Again, don't think "pipe bomb" like in Boston, think of a big wheeled suitcase full of HE and fragments going off in a packed security line on one of the busiest travel days of the year; the curtain's gonna come down on that security theater really damned fast. You don't need as much explosive to bring down a 747, if it's in the right place, but the security line's a place where the only limit on how big a bomb you can set off is that you need to carry it with you.

I got to run around on a brand new AA 777 on a commercial shoot for their new livery. The crew rest area was two beds and two giant comfortable captains chairs. Besides the low ceilings it would probably be the best seats in the plane.

No, but the 777 upper deck crew rest is the best seats in the house, barring the lack of windows.

Dude the weather is f'ed up right now, it got up to nearly 50°F yesterday, and was ~40°F today raining, and the snow is just.... gone. It looks like it normally does near the beginning of April right now.

A chinook is being used as a firefighting aircraft for the first time in Australia. The fire near Lorne is out of control in very rough terrain so they've been throwing dozens of aircraft at it, multiple erikson skycranes and many lighter aircraft too. A C130 is involved and they even flew one tanker down from Sydney (1000km) to do one drop of water last week.

When it arrives to a fire area a buggy towing the bucket drives out the back

Helicopter lands, down goes rear door, out drives this buggy towing a trailer, which has the largest Bambi bucket i have ever seen, then they lay out the cable, which would have to be at least 30 to 40 meters long. Impressive

Is there a commonly flown great circle route for the southern hemisphere over the south polar region? I know there are literally hundreds of flights over the north polar region every day, but I can only assume there isn't as many down south just simply due to population. From Australia to South Africa maybe?

Only good part of C-130 travel is exotic stopovers and occasionally you have few enough people/small enough cargo that the litters get deployed and you have 6-8 sleep bunks.

Some paints (especially metallics) are designed to go over a dark primer. It really makes the colors much more vibrant than going over a white or neutral gray primer.

Not really.

You're right about the demand; it just isn't there in the southern hemisphere. And beyond that, none of the major city pairings would take a flight much further than 70 degrees south, pairings like Sydney-Santiago or Johannesburg. Also the lack of diversion airports meant that for a long time this flight was the domain of three or four-engine airliners; only recently have certain twins (777, 787 and A350) been certified to fly up to 330 minutes from a suitable airport.

Flying eastbound over the pond today my heart sank when the cabin crew stowed their poo poo and strapped in, then I got a lot of attitude from my fellow passenger because I refused to get out my seat and made her step over to go pee (she got yelled back down). Thankfully it only lasted about half an hour.

I'm a pretty white-knuckle flyer at the best of times and this is pretty much my worst nightmare even though I know it's a scenario with a perfectly safe outcome. I feel like I'm overdue this to happen, the number of miles I've flown.

How much weight does all that paint add to the airframe? Seems like with so many coats, it'd be pretty heavy (though insignificant compared to the overall weight). Specifically talking about those custom paint jobs, mind you.

That's a little high; the number I've heard for a 737 is typically 250-300 pounds. The weight of paint varys (obviously) based on the colours and the number of layers needed to complete the scheme. Interestingly, a plain white scheme is about the heaviest option, as white paint typically needs a lot more pigment per volume to look right as opposed to coloured paint, as well as more coats of paint when applied.
