So I know some of us played the FPS game CCP made called DUST 514 way back.

They just announced that they're shutting it down on May 30th after 3 years of it being live, in favor of working on the PC version they showed off two years ago.

DUST 514 is being shut down on May 30th, and CCP confirmed they're still working on a PC version

https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=225484

quote:

Dear DUST 514 Community,

CCP’s development team in Shanghai has been working on a prototype for a first-person shooter for PC with the goal of building a great FPS set in our sci-fi universe of New Eden (the universe in which EVE Online, DUST 514, EVE: Valkyrie, and Gunjack are set). Their experience is being utilized to build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from DUST 514. This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game. This new project is still in an early phase of production, and we feel like we’re on the right track and plan to give an update at EVE Fanfest on April 21st as a part of the free livestream of the event. Since this new game will be different from DUST 514 (although keeping many of its great parts), we will provide tiered recognition rewards to our loyal DUST customers, details to be announced.

We are very proud of what we’ve learned and accomplished with DUST 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated community. We consider DUST 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that DUST 514 will be shutting down on May 30th, 2016. We therefore will not be releasing the 1.3 update as we had planned. Players will continue to be able to play for free on our servers until then, but all further PSN packs and purchases have been removed and disabled from the in-game marketplace and the PlayStation Store. Players with existing Aurum will be able to continue to purchase items from the in-game marketplace.

Thank you for being a part of DUST 514 on the PlayStation 3. We look forward to the next chapter, and hope you’ll be a part of it and continue the journey with us.

While lovely to have to do, it at least gives some explanation about why the game is being shut down on the PS3 and so forth and actually shares some insight into what the company is doing. CIG's community management team can probably learn from this, though I doubt they will.

Here's some gameplay from the PC demo they showed off in 2014.

I don't understand why these people don't simply repost the "threat assessment" as their own and then when DS threatens them with ill intent to maliciously harm they could have him arrested.

So what you're saying is that she'd have to be a pretty good actress to be able to pull off the two-faced bit, but since she's clearly not an actress of any great esteem clearly she must be genuine?

the gently caress physics is this game using?

Torque still occurs in space. If the sum of moments about the center of mass are not equal then the structure will rotate. That's why gyros work in space and are used on spacecraft even as we speak.

The problem is that accurately modeling physics in a space sim also requires you to correctly engineer the ships to accommodate those physics, and that goes against Chris's entire philosophy of dumb generic jets in space. The best "space fighter" design that I ever say was the Starfury from Babylon 5.

You see this Eve narrative over on Reddit all the time. You know it, you've seen it before - Goons ruined Eve. I don't get it. Can somebody explain it to me?

Like I get the gist. Goonswarm was a huge, cheap fleet that could lock down entire sectors and destroy important convoys. But I feel like without the adversity none of the really clever stories you hear about Eve even beyond this forum would have ever happened. I feel like it would have been a lot of spergs trying to push top tier ships for its own sake - presumably for Eve's absolutely riveting PvE?

Eve is a game that benefited from its scale and it's wild-west atmosphere. Without those things it would have been a mastubatory exercise and I'll never understand why people still curse goons for making a lackluster game relevant.

There are multiple phases to it. In the early days goons were wildly successful because teamwork was OP, and we had organised spergs that were drilling into the game to find out how it worked. At this point we were just frightfully effective, so CCP 'encouraged' an alliance to act as a counterbalance that contained some of the devs playing on their day off. They were the 'good guys' to our 'bad guys', an image that we encourage at every turn because it's hilarious.

After CCP got caught giving this alliance free stuff, they had to fire their 'rogue developer' and create a bunch of rules that effectively stopped them playing their own game, especially with mod powers.

There's also the various scams that people run, and the very, very real intelligence metagame that gets played that borders on the real life disturbing with some of the other alliances. Recruitment scams are the funniest, mainly because anyone can google Goons recruitment scam and probably get the big front page message that says 'we do not recruit'. That doesn't stop enterprising Goons from creating entire networks of 'officers' that will vouch for the fact that 'half a billion credits fees will get you in, and we can escort you and your stuff to 0.0' ~ YMMV, but it's basically the same.

We're a Darwinist force in a libertarian space game where a sucker joins every second and curiously, we're the good guys...

So, there's a couple of aspects to the butt-hurt; People scammed by Goons in Eve, Corporations that got their gate camp rolled by a slosh-op, People in alliances that aren't Goons. The wider picture is that some people can't take the idea that a bunch of 'meta-gaming whack jobs' that are simultaneously incompetent and yet a serious menace to any gaming community.

It's great.

This is the legend to the charts above and below.

After the fourth cable twist, begin decreases. On the chart for the decreases, I included the fourth cable twist to use as a reference point. The last cable twist, near the top of the chart, is the seventh cable twist.

When decrease chart is completed, break yarn and weave through remaining 8 sts.

Weave in loose ends; block. Fold brim up.

It's yet another day in the wasteland.

spacetoaster posted:

What happened?

EVE has a couple of different tiers of “capability” in ships. Tech 1 (stuff anyone can build), Tech 2 (advanced versions of T1 ships), Tech 3 (alien-tech gimmick ships), and Faction ships (special hard-hitting pirate and empire ships).

Back in the day, T3 didn't exist and T2 ships were the thing to have for advanced fleet setups. Ships are built from blueprints — either originals (BPOs) of infinite production capacity or copies (BPCs) with a limited number of builds on them. While anyone can buy a T1 BPO and start building, T2 BPOs had only been available through a convoluted and rather silly lottery system that had been phased out a year before the incident in favour of a process called “invention” that instead produced T2 BPCs of varying quality.

This had two effects: one was that T2 BPOs were rare and would only become more so as no new ones would ever be created; another was that they were always better than the invented BPCs. The BPOs could also be improved beyond their initial state, whereas the BPCs could not. Having a couple of T2 BPOs was a license to print money, and some industrialists had practically cornered the market on certain items by buying up all BPOs from other players. While they're not as important as they once were because the economy has outgrown them, the BPOs remain to this day and are still being traded at fantastical (to the point of irrational) sums because of how handy they are.

The so-called “T20 incident” was when the largest and 1337est alliance — BoB, the quintessential enemy of the goons —was discovered to have received BPOs from one of their members, who also happened to be a developer at CCP (the eponymous T20). The way it was discovered was some classic EVE-style meta-gaming and (game-)corporate espionage, which initially allowed the perpetrators to hind behind a narrative of “omg, they hacked our forums!” This, combined with the fact that a developer was involved, allowed the GMs and moderators to go hog-wild in their censorship: the guy who discovered the donation was banned and his name was added to the EVE forum word filter so it could never be uttered again. Any thread discussing the topic was closed, nuked, burned, and kicked in the groin.

Enter the goon posting machine. No amount of heavy-handed moderation could actually keep the scandal contained with that kind of :justpost: warband on the loose, and it didn't help that everyone else actually agreed with the goons on this — and only this — one thing. It soon became clear that this was plain old developer malfeasance and outright cheating, so CCP had to actually do something to fix it all. Among other things, they instituted a player-populated oversight body called the Council of Stellar Management (which is own unending source of drama and political slapfighting, but that's for another time) and to slap a few wrists to at least regain some customer trust. Rules were also enacted that restricted exactly how devs could play the game privately.

The entire episode had severely damaged CCP's reputation; the trust in “the system”; and made old jabs of “Band of Developers” have a very nasty new sting to them.
