Today I'm... amped up!

A big problem I have with the early game is that if one of your guys so much as takes a hit they become gravely wounded and whoops, they're out for the next month or so. I can't train rookies fast enough to replace the Grenadier and Specialist I've lost to wounds before the scripted Retaliation mission in the beginning, and I can't build the AWC fast enough to get them to heal faster.

And of course, I wind up activating three different pods and a Faceless all on the same turn. I've got a Sharpshooter, a Ranger, and three rookies.

I've mostly been staying in the dark on xcom 2 info for the last few months to stay unspoiled. Cracked open the game last night and having a blast with it.

After early 700 combined hours with EU, EW, and Long War, its nice to have to learn a new ruleset and have soldiers take hits occasionally, eg: way underestimating stun lancer move + attack range and being terrified by faceless.
Not that deep in, but I like the different feel of the strategy layer framing

Also, after Long War, I was so used to weapon tech upgrades being piddly little jumps, so mag weapons actually doing significantly more felt so good.

Soldier customization is great, weapon customization is great
Pretty sure I hit my first bug, with a grenadier who used demolition and missed now being stuck out of cover 1 tile away from where he started the action from which is an old EU bug that gave everyone the warm fuzzies, so I'm fully expecting to run into the full gamut of weird LOS quibbles, teleporting enemies etc from EU at some point.
Still going to play on ironman, though :downs:

They can't see behind cover, which I assume your guys typically are in, unless they are flanking you. That only applies for actually being in the cover and not one step behind it, though, it doesn't block vision all the way back.

That is why scouting with someone by bouncing cover to cover is good because you won't trigger them if they walk by you.

Getting the Advanced Warfare Center early rules because of the crazy bonuses you can get. Already have a concealment medic, a guardian sniper (who is levels up high enough that she also has killzone), and a cannon grenadier who has what I think is a high-level sniper ability? If he kills an enemy using the ability he gets his action points back. I'll have to look at it when I get home from work.

Just unlocked tracer rounds (straight on to my long-range sniper, +10% aim!), gas grenades, and I'm developing an experimental armor and I have no idea what that will end up being because I never saw beagle or jams do that research while streaming.

Goddamn this game rules.

I get the bug where the aliens dont start immediately, so I hope that gets fixed. I have no idea if the more intensive missions will be okay, but I have graphics as low as possible.

That said I am running the mac version that was ported by Feral and even in the original EU/EI i got far better performance playing on the windows side.

^^^^ AFAIK if they walk around to a flanking position then they will spot you, otherwise you'll be fine. The trick is that if you move at all you will lose your cover and get spotted.

The game needs a stop drop and roll option for when I accidentally path people through fire and they continue to not give a drat while burning to death

Change this:

AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainXFOV

AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainYFOV

And enjoy your ultrawide with intact soldier heads and legible menus :toot:

That's what I mean, they walked through a flanking position - two turns in a row, and nobody did anything on either side. I just gave up and attacked.

e: Reloaded to fiddle around, it's scripted that the truck explodes when the converter is disabled so you're guaranteed to have someone die. I guess to show off the sectoid's new abilities?

I intentionally went into this game blind as possible because I know the basics from lots of XCOM 1 playtime and wanted to be surprised. My first terror mission I dashed a low-health ranger to a civilian as the last action for my turn. The civilian was in an enclosed area with high cover so I thought it would be safe. This is how I learned about the Faceless.

How far away were they? If one of their red vision squares didn't cover the square your soldier was on, it won't break concealment even if it's a flank.

Mine didn't explode though, and the converter was far enough away from the cab that the soldier wouldn't have been caught in it anyway.

Biggest difference is that some basic enemies have a lot of health now so it is much more difficult to clear the field in this game vs EU. That generally translates into taking more shots and more damage.

Also, ran a cache verification before I left for work and just remoted in to check it. 2 files failed verification, and from checking file modified metadata it looks like it was two core dlls. A little suspicious that the unpacking process corrupted them. So to whomever was asking me if I was experiencing an RNG malfunction that nobody else was seeing? There's evidence to support that, actually, so bite me.

Regardless, this experience has made me think that shotguns for rookies might be a good mod for me to make. Should be easy to make, and even with the fuckery yesterday, shotguns hit 100% accuracy at close range so it presumably would have helped a lot. Also it's always struck me as weird that you need ginzu training to figure out a pump action.

I got up through the first terror mission last night before I got tired and went to sleep. I feel like the game's still got its kid gloves on, though, since I don't have a doomsday timer to work against yet and so far none of the missions have threatened me with consequences if I fail or ignore them. Or maybe I'm just doing really good? That doesn't seem likely, though.

I do have a question: twice now I've been in Concealment, ended my turn, and then the aliens moved on their turn so that soldiers who were safe before are now in alert tiles. Is there any way to avoid Concealment being blown at that point? I've just been going "okay, gently caress it then" and opening fire, but if I can wait it out by holding still that'd be nice to know.

If a soldier doesn't move they won't be seen but if they get flanked they're boned. It depends on the situation but I've found it better to break cover at that point rather than risk losing the bonus all together.

About ten tiles. They patrolled back and forth through it, and it was visible on either side.

That's strange then. I could only hack the converter from the right or the tile nearest the cab; I did so from further away and they died. I made sure everyone hunkered down and no enemy made a shot; it blew up anyway.

Patrols only spot you if they both have you in a conceal tile and are flanking you. So sure, you can bunker and hope they walk by. The timed missions seem pretty tight, though, so that might not be much of an option, depending.
