Full cover takes 2 grenades. The pillars dont do it right to show you, but for a tree. The first grenade blows it in half and the second one will uproot it.

Your friend is a whiny little baby. The mission timers are loose enough that you're not likely to be hitting them constantly.

Yeah, I think that's a dumb thing in the tutorial, it kind of sets a wrong expectation.

The sword is cool and good and I wish I would get a second ranger already because Kelly's been out since mission 2. I'll have to do the retaliation Monday though, hopping on a train. :( By the way there is a timer for the retaliation but it's less than 20 hours. So don't wait.

No way to get special weapons out of wounded soldier's hands, LOS issues, and overwatch issues kind of drag things down a bit but the game is super good.

It's all text, so git might be helpful, actually. I can try experimenting with that this weekend, until then peas is doing great.

I'm also being a big dork and editing all the bio birth dates to actually make sense; do we know if there's a file that can be edited to just change the range so I don't end up with Donovan Lake, Scotland's youngest convict, who was imprisoned when the invasion came at the sprightly age of 7?

Loving the new mechanics and that there's more variety to the build order. Or any variety at all I guess? The performance issues are pretty serious though! Some jank and visual bugs I can deal with but having to turn off a whole bunch of graphics stuff to keep the game from turning into a slideshow at times when other games - way better looking and technically performance craving ones - run perfectly fine is kind of a poor show. Game needs patching, simply put.

What are you supposed to do when the enemies in a raid mission decides to completely ignore your dudes and go straight for civilians every round?
I even tried sprinting to put two of my guys (out of ammo) right next to a shielder, but he decided to run off and shoot the nearest civilian instead.

And before you ask, there were way too many enemies for me to wipe them out first.

Jane Kelly has become a sectoid murder machine. She hardly needs to use her shotgun.

No I'm not because the core gameplay in Super Mario Bros doesn't reward small timid movements without it. There are however several excellent levels in Mario games which make use of a timer to encourage you to take risks and do things you wouldn't normally. The timer wouldn't improve ever level but it improves those levels. Meanwhile without forward encouragement in X-COM you're pushed towards boring timid slow gameplay, and no amount of "but you don't have to" will change the fact that a lot of people adopted that playstyle without outside encouragement. That was the entire reason they added Meld to EW.

Yeah, sword is great. Especially if you pick up the ability that lets you run through overwatches, since rangers can attack after sprinting.

Very good for tactical pickoffs.

I don't mind the timed missions, but 8 rounds seems way too tight early on. I have had a couple of missions that I'm not sure how I was supposed to do within the time limit without savescumming and learning the layout and enemy placement of each map.
If they just bumped the timer for the early missions up to, say, 10, I wouldn't have any issues. Now that I'm a bit into the game, I'm getting missions with 12 turn timers, and finishing them with 3-4 left, so it seems to have been mostly an issue with unlucky map layouts starting out.

What, seriously? I played along with all its dumbshit instructions because I was sure it had fixed results, and it sure seemed to -- characters made shots they shouldn't have and got missed when they should've been pasted, and then there was pre-recorded dialogue about it.

You are supposed to cry, hate yourself and the aliens, curse a lot, and then figure out a way so next time you can wipe them all out first.

It's intentional behavior; the aliens' objective in raid missions is "kill civilians" so they'll turn from you to go kill civvies almost every time, because wiping out your guys isn't their win condition at the moment. They pulled the same poo poo last game in Terror missions.
