Playing it safe went out the window when we took a party of exactly the wrong size on a multi-month expedition past the edge of the known world. On my view, we either should not have bothered (continue with magistrating and researching and whatnot), or taken a tiny scouting party, possibly just ourselves and Snarls (as Snarls proposed). Alternately, if we'd taken every member of the Balls, we would've stood a generally better chance in most of our encounters with the dangerous wilderness, though we'd've left Zepath, Kavodel, and that other one rather undefended.

(We had a possible reprieve with the bugs, where we likely could have founded a surface-level city, after a while, and begun a new civilization. In retrospect, I wish I had campaigned or at least voted for the idea.)

Typically, people have used Google Docs spreadsheets to store the count itself, and kept that updated. As need be, they'd post when it had been updated, and offer a link and a summary. That way, you don't have a page long list posted every time the count is updated.
