I admit, this isn't what I was expecting when I signed on with the project, and if we had unlimited time and resources and didn't have to worry about our sales, I'd have liked it if we could have done a few things differently. But it's a tough industry, and things change in development, and we had to make some compromises. That's just how it is. But it's been a valuable learning experience for all of us, and I think we'll be able to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Guys unfortunately I think we're going to have to shut the project down. Steam is telling me if we want to put our game up on their service we're going to need to censor a few of the more questionable scenes. I can't preserve my artistic integrity while giving in to censorship demands so I'm going to release what we've finished of the project for free and hopefully that will garner enough interest that when we try our next project people will be willing to back it through Kickstarter so we don't need to rely on Steam for our sales.

It was really good working with you guys.

anything decent on ios, aside from 999? something playable / readable on phones.

You could try Banshee's Last Cry, one of (if not the first) 'sound novel', an early form of VN that's mostly just text and music. Obviously it's pretty primitive, I thought it was okay though.

Banshee's Last Cry is a very good and interesting iOS VN! It starts off as a straightforward mystery but there are a lot of routes and it changes dramatically for quite a few of them.

It depends what you mean by "on the level of". There are loads that are as popular as 999/VLR or more so, but they're not all going to be accessible/engaging in the same way. There are decent arguments for any of the following, though:
  • The Dangan Ronpa series: Mystery/Horror. Somewhat oversaturated in their popularity, especially around these forums, but they do deserve a lot of the praise they get. Phoenix Wright-style gameplay, but with horror elements played up more.
  • The Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni series: Horror/Mystery. Much slower paced, dread-filled japanese style horror. No gameplay at all, not a lot of art. Absolutely a classic, but not all that accessible.
  • The Umineko no Naku Koro Ni series: Mystery/Horror. Higurashi, but with the pacing and craziness ratcheted up and the traditional horror ratcheted down. Still no gameplay, arguably even less art. Slightly more accessible.
  • Fate/Stay Night: Action/Horror. This is probably closest to 999's level of balance. Horror elements aren't all that frequent, but the writer takes full advantage of them when they come up. Minimal gameplay, good art, fairly accessible. Note that some versions contain pornographic scenes, because the Japanese PC game market is kind of messed up.
  • Tsukihime: Horror/Action. Probably the closest on this list to pure horror. Unfortunately if you want a non-pornographic version with good art you'll have to wait god knows how long for the remake.
I've still not played Steins;Gate, so while I know that it's very good I don't know how much horror there is in it. Maybe someone else can chime in?

The Zero Escape writer's other games are all strong as well, but they all have much less horror than the ZE games; they're generally more focussed on the mystery and science aspects.

By "on the level of," I mean of the (high) quality of 999/VLR. There are other horror visual novels like Banshee's Last Cry but they aren't nearly as good, scary, or as engaging as something like 999. They don't have vivid descriptions of a guy's blown out insides looking like spaghetti or a grotesque blooming flower in a sea of blood at the least. BLC started as an SNES game so that's probably why it seems primitive.

I actually prefer there not be a game element to it, really. I just really like the horror aspects of 999 with the sense of urgency of rushing to the next door before the timer runs out and you blow up and the looming sense of danger and urgency of being on a sinking ship with one of the people in your group possibly being a serial killer.

Thanks for the suggestions, though!

Why not release the censored version on Steam and link back to an uncensored Director's Cut on your website? Best of both worlds, really.

Accomplished directors with integrity have to do this all the time by releasing an "R version" in theaters for a wider audience while releasing an "NC-17 version" or Director's Cut on DVD/Blu-Ray later.

Sound of Drop might be worth looking at; the descriptions of violence in that game actually reminded me quite a lot of the way 999 handled it. It's got that same combination of graphic description but detached, almost clinical detail to it. Gameplay is pretty much straightforward CYOA-style read-and-make-a-choice, with most of the choices past the intro sequence either advancing the plot or leading to a quick and messy death: it's basically a gauntlet with a couple of branching paths. Be warned that it's quite short (you can get either of the two normal endings in a couple of hours if you're a fast reader, and then there are two NG+-only alternate routes that add a fair bit of extra content) and the premise may or may not land for you as effective horror (it's a haunted aquarium, there are some genuinely well-written and unsettling scenes in the game but they're still working against the fact that there's something inherently silly about the idea of deadly fish ghosts).

So a lot of you have probably heard about Flowers' translation being a bit of a disaster. The official word from JAST seems to be that they hosed up by releasing a demo before doing adequate QA on it and they're delaying the release until it isn't a disaster any more. Here's hoping they manage to fix it.

I'd personally classify 999 as a thriller rather than horror, since the overriding moods are suspense and paranoia rather than dread, but I can see how someone who likes horror VNs would like it.

How do you define horror then? I'll concede the point that 999 is mostly a thriller, but it's definitely got some horror/dread elements like seeing the blasted body of Snake in the shower with entrails and guts everywhere, plus the Sub ending where you find literally everyone else is dead and you just feel numb inside before getting shanked yourself.

I don't know how you couldn't see those as horror elements.

(P.S., I love your avatar. :3:)

Yeah, do all of Yuna's choices then watch all of the extra apple scenes and you get that, there's not a ton of choices but it's kind of a pain to go through them all again, especially if you can't remember which one you did last time. At least you only get them in the main (bear) storyline path.

I appreciate that they didn't try to jam everything they had in before the end credits. It was smart to defer as much as possible to the "postgame". It's a great strength of games that they let you do that. In any other medium, they'd have had to cut all that completely.

Dangan Ronpa 2 is coming out on April 18th. Man I hope Higurashi 3 comes out around the same time. That'd be an awesome way to spend the month. Tatarigoroshi (Higurashi 3) is probably my favorite chapter in the series because of how much it screws with your head about the story and makes you doubt everything you thought you had figured out.

Nate RFB
Jan 17, 2005

Clapping Larry
Tatarigoroshi for me is the first "real" Higurashi chapter, in that it starts to actually get to the meat and potatoes of the story and is better paced than the previous two. It's also a big hump to get over because it's long and chapter 4 is the shortest chapter by far so hopefully that won't take too much time, thus wrapping up all of the Question chapters. Then we get into the Answer chapters which completely own and hopefully won't take as much time to fix up because their original translations weren't too bad.
