quote:Salmann Rushdi I’m sure would have a big disagreement with you and he defined Islam so many years ago with his book, The Satanic Verses. Not that I expect keen literary analysis from Freep, but this is right up there with assuming Heart of Darkness is about how Africans are terrible uncivilized people or Moby Dick is a hunting travelogue (there are probably better parallel title-based assumptions, point them out for me). I'm not any expert, but my simplistic take is that the original "Satanic verses" is a folk/apocryphal belief that at one point when Mohammed was receiving the Quran, the Devil tricked him into inserting some shout-outs to three women pagan gods. It's a pretty controversial belief since it implies that even the Devil could pull a trick to mess with God's work, though my vague impression is that some historians believe the tale developed as an excuse to Mohammed mistakenly trying to mention some pagan gods as a concession and then backtracking when he recognized that it undermined his message, but that's a debate for scholars. The actual Rushdie book The Satanic Verses is some postmodern Gabriel Garcia Marquez-esque stuff where two guys on a plane in the 1980s that gets blown up by terrorists and as they're falling out of the sky they become legendary Quranic characters and then have to go through police processes and romances and putting their lives back together while simultaneously being epic creatures and having weird surreal dreams and whatnot. And arguably some of it is "unreliable narrator" stuff where it's either a dying hallucination or schizophrenia or whatnot. The book was considered offensive to Islam not because it condemns it, but more along how the lines of Last Temptation of Christ has Jesus fantasizing about sex with the disciple Mary Magdalene and all that, using epic Biblical characters to examine human foibles, edgy reboot stuff and all. Someone more literary let me know if I'm off here, but the point is that Freeper knows zero beyond the title. Fwiw, Rushdie is a Muslim turned atheist, and isn't like some rabidly anti-Islam convert, he just thinks/thought it's all nonsense regardless of which faith. Rushdie is big on cultural relativism, humanism, and basically diametrically opposed to Freep's narrative on most everything. I think it's only one or two freepers who give serious thought to Antisemitism because they scream about Soros being a Jew in addition to a Nazi Satanist. The rest seem pretty ambivalent on the subject, and like Israel because they're fighting Muslims really close to the front lines.

Take it from me, I ran restaurants for 10+ years 99% of retail and 100% of restaurants will never, ever, ever be fully automated, or even appreciably more automated than they are at the moment. No machine could ever handle interacting with someone as crafty and underhanded as your average fast food customer. The best part of all is that people on Freep are the ones least likely to embrace interacting 100% with a machine for food and call and bitch about how there's no people
