Brian Gerwitz on a recent Talk is Jericho talks extensively about his experience as a defendant in Wrestler's Court; it's worth a listen.

I like that not only did JBL lose quickly, but also that his hair stayed immaculate during the match too.

Still seems a bit weird to me that JBL, who by all accounts had a huge locker room presence and therefore must've had some say in his booking, would let his retirement match be a comedy squash at a Mania. It's an awful idea (especially given Kofi's feelings on the whole thing) but it's exactly the kind of thing I can see someone trying to make happen. I wouldn't be shocked if they put Kofi and Xavier on one show and gave Big E a singles push on the other. I also wouldn't be surprised if both Kofi and Xavier walked. Or add a 4th member and split them up so there's a New Day tag team on both shows and they talk to each other through video promos on the Titantron about how much they miss each other.

NameHurtBrain posted:It was an extension of a storyline. Not exactly a huge one, but it was built up to. Just a minor correction, neither was in the Rumble. JBL was going up against Cena at the show and made sure Michaels wasn't in the Rumble match itself so he could be focused in his corner. It was a great dick move. I was a huge fan of that whole angle. I especially liked how it was bookended well. It all started because of a segment where Charlie Haas -- who was doing impressions at the time -- showed up dressed as JBL to make fun of him to his face. Instead of angrily clotheslining him into oblivion, JBL just went in a weird daze and left the ring, as if saying, "I used to be a champion and now I'm a joke. What the hell happened?" Then after months of using everything he had to be relevant when he needed it the most, he lost to Rey in seconds on the biggest stage and ended up standing there in the exact same daze.

Yeah, I could see them keeping the group together and having ND members from one brand be on the other show in a promo capacity but not a wrestling capacity, and then paint the whole thing as "we found a loophole". Also ghere is legitimately zero reason why you couldn't give Big E a singles run while still part of the New Day. It reeks of Cena-itis to assume that all singles wrestlers must be friendless sad sacks.

It lined up perfectly with the story they had told; Bryan had spent almost 6 months avoiding a fair fight and he got more and more full of himself and then when he finally got into a fair fight, his arrogance got him squashed. It was a good storyline with a solid payoff. People just reacted badly to it because they were convinced Bryan was going to get squashed after that. Maybe Meltzer said he was or something, I don't know.

Maybe Meltzer said he was or something, I don't know. That may all be true, but the important question is why Daniel Bryan (or anyone that you would see a future in) was booked to be the 10,000th cowardly heel champ who can't ever look good in a row in modern WWE or get a real match at the biggest show of the year. I mean, I would not doubt for a minute that Team Hell No's original purpose was to relegate Bryan to bit player/Goldust status. Comedy gimmicks are not meant to help guys climb the ladder, if Vince wants you to do that he will just book you to win a million matches in a row.

It wasn't even the concept of him losing, it was how he lost. A lot of people expected Bryan to lose at Mania given the storyline at the time, but they assumed he would lose a really good 10 or so minute match. The fact that it was the exact opposite was what pissed people off.

For me, I was wanting to see what the hype about this Daniel Bryan guy was all about, because I stopped watching from 2010 - 2012 but would still buy the Rumble and Mania. So you're pretty much right on that I was expecting at least like a 10 minute match, so was pissed at what they gave us. Also opening the show in that fashion left a real bad taste in my mouth and then the rest of the show was bad too.
