I had never heard Mastodon until tonight - thought it was A Perfect Circle at first. Way more melodic that I thought they would be based on the name. The song was "Oblivion" - any recommendations on other stuff from them or similar stuff that combines melody plus heaviness? Deftones I'm already well familiar with

Could try Between The Buried & Me if you're not turned off by fits of death vox, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM0y65VZK84 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oipeeZs65EI They're the only real heavier band that I can roll with these days.

Also Mastodon didn't really sound like that until their fourth album, so just a heads up if you try to explore them further.

Recently I've been playing GTA V online and enjoying the in game radio, particularly Channel X (almost a 10 year span from mid 1970s to mid 80s punk) and Vinewood Boulevard Radio (defined as post punk or Alternative Rock, all the tracks are under 10 years old, most about 5) and I'm looking for more since they're not really genres I've paid much attention to before, I do like Punk but it tends to be more The Offspring era stuff. http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Channel_X Particular favourites: Agent Orange - Bored of You Black Flag - My War (Got the album already but I know Black Flag has a complicated history) Adolescents - Amoeba Descendents - Pervert Suicidal Tendencies - Subliminal MDC - John Wayne Was a Nazi The Zeros - Don't Push Me Around X - Los Angeles D.R.I. - I Don't Need Society http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Vinewood_Boulevard_Radio Wavves - Nine Is God FIDLAR - Cocaine Bass Drum of Death - Crawling After You Shark? - California Girls The Black Angels - Black Grease Bleached - Next Stop Mind Spiders - Fall in LIne The Soft Pack - Answer to Yourself

Are there any artists similar to Florence in that she has a heavy, kinda-rock style approach that juxtaposes the gospel-style singing? I guess what I'm trying to say is Florence but no X-Factor-style artists but more along the lines of Lorde, Courtney Barnett, etc.

I'd like to second a recommendation for artists similar to Courtney Barnett. I can't stop listening to her album.

Cate le Bon and Hinds are close, Mac Demarco too; Strange Boys, Sonny & The Sunsets, The Modern Lovers... Her lo-fi garage rock sound isn't hard to find, but it's her stream-of-conscious lyrics and singing/talking style that are harder to find. Lyrically, The Mountain Goats are similar.

I've had these three songs stuck in my head for the past couple weeks, anybody got any more stuff that sounds like them? Nate Good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYKwNZOWtM8 Chadwick Stokes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0W0sTenCig The Submarines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYvt0boSRXQ I've found all of Chadwick and Submarine's stuff on Spotify, really wondering more about similar style to Nate Good. He only has like 4 songs.

I'm volunteering at a hostel and looking for something chill that I can play in the background of the combined reception/common area. I've been hitting the afrobeat pretty hard today but I'd be keen to mix it up. I tend towards funky or jazzy stuff but I'm not tied to that. Lyrics don't matter, just nothing too loud or distracting I guess. Hopefully that's enough information

Hopefully that's enough information The Hotel Costes in Paris put out a huge number of lounge/downtempo compilation albums over the years mixed by their resident DJ, because apparently that's a thing hotels have. They'd probably work as something to easy to set up and leave in the background, especially since their label seems to have put them all up in full on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NopyfccW-gE

Can anybody recommend me any resources for keeping track of new releases? See, one CD reissue line I love is the Japanese Atlantic Soul/R&B range, and when I was in the local record shop today I saw some new releases, and realised I haven't a clue how to keep track (since there doesn't seem to be a website for them).
|
# ? Aug 20, 2016 12:28 |

generally speaking: social media, mailing lists/rss feeds for record stores, magazines, blogs, and labels, and spotify which just recently implemented a tool which filters new releases to you based on your listening habits. this seems to be their website? http://wmg.jp/randb1000/ it has an rss view. i can't read japanese and my browser doesn't autotranslate so i dunno if there are sort functions or if there's a page specifically for new releases but this is a good starting point. discogs is also a powerful tool with lots of information and sorting options.

Right. I'm not really on social media but I'll have a look. Discogs is a pretty useful resource - I mainly use it for songwriter info or to get hold of CDs that are harder to find.

The Dead Boys (their second album overall is better, not as mindlessly "I wanna get drunk, fight, scare old ladies, and punch my girlfriend" as the first album, but their first album has the punk classic Sonic Reducer so you have to hear it anyway), The Damned (earlier stuff for punk, and later stuff if you like some goth rock too), The Dickies You should definitely check out more of Agent Orange and Descendents, don't let those two songs be your only exposure. Agent Orange's first album Living In Darkness is loving excellent from front to back. Most people would probably say start with Milo Goes to College with the Descendents, but honestly I think a good starting point is their comp album Somery, even if it is missing the song Kabuki Girl.
