It seems I'm in the minority, but maid outfits? That's no good.

Update 22: Birth of the Maid Cafe

: It's about that cafe not far from here...

*Conversation: Vin*
: How to make the cafe popular, eh?
: Offer free refills! That'd do it for me.
: Sounds good--thanks. (I'll write that down.)

*Conversation: Ben*
: Something to make people go to that cafe...hmm...
: A pretty waitress would probably attract a good-sized crowd.
: Sounds good--thanks. (I'll write that down.)

Idea Memo posted:

The general idea for this part is to gather ideas for the Idea Memo, and the description updates every time you do. If you don't get enough, you simply waste your time (and Time) and Derek still dies. Now that you've gotten their opinions, you can walk off. However, if you talk to Ben here, you can get...

*Conversation: Ben, reprise*
: In fact, it'd be especially nice if the waitress wore a maid's uniform.
: Er, um...okay. Thanks. (I...guess I'll write that down.)

It's really easy to miss this, as if you go anywhere else - even inside the classroom - Ben's gone by the time you get back. You can bug both of them again to get more tidbits, which I only noticed when I was going back over this section for Idea Memo images. All of these do nothing (probably).

*Conversation: Ben, reprise*
: I'd love to have a plate of crepes at a cafe that knows how to make 'em right.
: Sounds good--thanks. (I'll write that down.)

*Conversation: Vin, reprise*
: Imagine if we could drink as much as we wanted! I'd be down there in a heartbeat!
: Sounds good--thanks. (I'll write that down.)

*Conversation: Vin, reprise*
: A cafe's gotta have good ambience, too. But that's about the last idea I can come up with.
: Thanks. That's really helpful. (I'll write that down.)

: Uh, no...not really...
: (Actually, let me ask him about the cafe.)
: Mr. Twombly, what's the best way for a cafe to succeed?
: What's that? A cafe?
: That's right. A friend of mine owns a cafe that's not doing too well, you see...
: ...What is it with you Kairos boys and cafes? Your late uncle had a cafe for a while, didn't he?
: Y-yes, he did.
: (And that's the one I want to ask about...although I think it would take too long to explain.)
: Let's see...the ingredients for a successful cafe...
: I'd love to hear any ideas you might have.
: ...Hmmmm...
: ......
: Nnnnnrgh!
: Er, Mr. Twombly...?
: I'm afraid I can't help you with that!
: Oh, er...that's all right. Sorry to spring such a weird question on you like that. (I...don't think I'll bother writing that one down.)
: But feel free to come to me for advice on any other subject, eh?
: Yes, sir. Thank you very much.
: Later!

A stop by the library finds us Ben again.

: What's up with you? What are you doing here at the library?
: ......
: All right, fine. I'll tell you. This is just between us, okay?
: Sure.
: You see that girl working at the desk there?
: Sara? What about her?
: Hey! How do you know her name? Listen, pal, I saw her first!
: But, Ben...her name is right there on her desk.
: What!? Oh...well, that's all right, then.
: So she's the reason you borrow all those books, eh? (All really difficult ones, too.)
: Hey, they just happen to have a lot of good books here!
: (...Bingo.)
: Don't even think about homing in on this, Kairos! I've got a good thing going here!
: Ha ha ha--I wouldn't dream of it!
: You'd better not! All right, I'm heading home. Later.
: (...Wow...good for him. He did say he liked pretty girls, and Sara sure is qualified.)
: (Maybe I'd better emphasize that point in those cafe ideas of mine.)

: Oh, Ashley...
: Vin's not back yet. Probably hanging out somewhere or other.
: Gotcha.

: (I see Ashley hasn't changed.)
: Vin's become a world-class slacker. Tell him to cut it out! Tell him he'll get fat if he just sits around all day, every day!
: Um, sure...

You may recall this came up a few times already, mainly in his profile description.

: Yeah...he quit the team, didn't he?
: It's because of that injury from when he was a kid.
: Huh...?
: Don't you remember? He fell off a ladder when a rung collapsed.
: He was trying so hard not to cry. It must have hurt like crazy!
: What ladder was this?
: Heck if I know. Didn't you guys build a secret hideout once upon a time? Must have been that ladder, then.
: ......
: (The ladder to our hideout...)

You'd think they'd have fixed it if they knew about it. It's not like it's hard to fix that.

: He fell and hurt his hip. And that was the end of basketball for him.
: Really...
: But listen, this is just between us, okay? Who knows what he'd do to me if he found out I told you his weakness?
: Sure thing. I won't tell a soul.
: I'll hold you to that. See ya!

She heads back inside.

{Soundtrack: Silence}

: (...The ladder to our secret hideout. Maybe I can shore it up with some string.)

We can't actually do anything about this yet thanks to the location being unavailable (Aeon being closed and all), but I think this is the only chance to find this out. I'm just going to assume you aren't assholes and are fine with me fixing this later. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

: ...Hmm...aren't there any nice cafes around here? A neighborhood place--preferably one that's hiring...
: (Looking for work, I see...)

: Hi! You working?
: More or less.
: (I should ask Morris if he has any ideas for helping Chronos.)
: Say, Morris, can I ask you something...?

Quick fade out and back in.

: How to improve business at a cafe, eh...?
: This friend of mine owns a cafe that's not doing too well, so...
: I don't know what kind of place it is, but what really matters is the atmosphere.
: Atmosphere, huh?
: Around here, the only place you can really sit and read a while is the library.
: I'd like someplace where we can have more casual study sessions.
: I see... Someplace good for casual studying...
: (I'll write that down. Morris sure likes to study...)
: All set?
: Yep--thanks a lot. Sorry to bug you while you're working.
: No problem. See you later.

The last one is really easy to mess up on if you're used to checking flashbacks immediately. Mainly because it's inside Chronos, and that's also the location where the Hole is to be opened. So if you don't expect it, you open the Hole, toss your memo in, and fail because you didn't check there.

I probably should have actually cleaned his portrait shots before, but Chronos is a pain to clean.

: Um...I couldn't help but notice that you come here a lot.
: What about it? Shouldn't I?
: No, no--I just have a little survey here, polling customer opinion.
: (Pretty nice excuse, if I do say so myself...)
: For example, what could a different owner do to help this cafe thrive?
: What?! There's going to be a different owner?
: Is something wrong?
: Er, no...nothing at all.
: All right, then. Enjoy yourself.
: Phew...
: I'm sorry--that was just an example, a what-if.
: Sheesh--don't scare me like that. She's the only reason I come here!
: ............
: ......Huh?
: I happen to love cafes with female staff members!
: You mean...?
: Well, you can't very well relax in a place that's nothing but middle-aged men, can you?
: Aha, I see...interesting... (I...guess I'll write that down.)

Congratulations, you get your maid cafe. I choose to believe the people of Kako decided "maid uniforms can't possibly be bad".

: (Olivia...?)

Forgive my inadequate stitching skill - and apparently the artist's as well, as you can see the colour shift where the two images were stitched together.

Derek: Wakey wakey! Shop's been closed for hours.
Sox: Mrowwr.
Ethan: Hey, Sox. Long time no see. (So Sox is working at Uncle Derek's cafe, too...)
Sox: Mrowr.
Derek: Here, drink this. You'll feel better.
Ethan: Thanks a lot. Sorry to do this to you when you're so busy.
Derek: Don't mention it. I'm done working for the day, anyway. You must have been exhausted. You slept for ages! Go on home, Livi.
Olivia: Okay!
Ethan: ...The place is doing great.
Derek: Good enough to keep you fed, I'd say.
Ethan: Ha ha ha...yeah, I guess so.
Derek: I remember he always used to tell me, "Any cafe you run is doomed to fail. You're going to wind up eking out a pitiful existence, up to your eyeballs in debt." You know who said that?
Ethan: No...who?
Derek: Your father--every time I saw him.
Ethan: Wow. He really said that? (He must have seen what was coming... Now that I think about it...)

: (...That might have had something to do with Chronos, too.)
: Then one day he left this idea memo in the cafe for me.
: Huh?

Ethan: What did it say?
Derek: Ah, nothing important.
Ethan: ......
Derek: But the emotions behind it came through loud and clear. ...This memo is a real treasure. I wouldn't be here without it.
Ethan: ... (Thank goodness...)
Derek: When your parents come back, I'll give 'em a taste of the house special.
Ethan: Uncle Derek...
Derek: ...So anyway... How do you like the coffee?

Ethan: Hope I can drink it with Mom and Dad soon...

{Soundtrack: Silence}

: ...! (Has...has my room changed again?)

*Examine: Bed*
: What's this on my bed...?

Ethan: "It totally slipped my mind, but Vin and Ashley reminded me. It's not much, but I hope you like it. Happy 17th! -- Uncle Derek"
Ethan: So this is Uncle Derek's doing. Sheesh... (You know, he's not half bad.)

Ethan: Irving... Why would you do such a thing to Uncle Derek...!?
Irving: Never mind that. Come to the scene of the bus accident tomorrow morning at 6.
Ethan: Wait a second! Why should I listen to you?

Indeed, a pretty good question, though I'm sure we know the answer already.

Irving: Because you never know what...unpleasant changes could happen in your life if you don't.
Ethan: !!!

And with that, Irving hangs up.

: Hey!

True, but at least Ethan did ask "why should listen to you", which shows that he is aware that it's not the best idea. But the 6 AM arrival time means Irving didn't leave him much time to get allies who would be willing to go without explanation especially if it's a school day. And Irving threatened consequences if Ethan didn't show up, and we know he could certainly do that.

That would depend on whether the holders of Hollow Pens don't freeze when other Hollow Pen holders open up time holes. They probably do not. Unrelated, but Irving did NOT say "come alone" which does suggest that he's not intending to do harm to Ethan.

Update 23: Let's Do The Time Warp Again

: (Where's Irving?)

Sound of footsteps.

: There you are...Ethan Kairos.

Ethan: (What a grim expression... Is this the real Irving Onegin?)
: So tell me, Ethan...
: Why do you persist in killing my mother over and over again?
: It's not me!
: Even though my mother gets off the bus just fine beyond the Hole...
: she gets right back on that bus as soon as I close that Hole.
: Don't you find that...odd? Just what's going on here, Ethan?
: I'm wondering that myself.
: Isn't your father the one responsible for my mother's accident?
: !? My...my father?
: He's the one who sent for her. On her way to see him, she...well, you know the rest.
: And now you--you've followed in your father's footsteps and killed my mother all over again...
: No! I never killed her! And I never sent for her, either! Stop making wild accusations!
: ...So you have proof--is that what you're saying?
: Huh?

Evidence is everything in court, Ethan.

: She had the letter with her. I had it myself until yesterday.
: ...
: Your uncle brought me the letter that would back me up.
: But that letter is gone. The Derek of today isn't gathering info on that accident--he's not a writer. So the letter's gone.
: ...
: So why can't you save my mother from the bus accident that happened here, Ethan?
: Will I ever get a straight answer out of you?
: Just don't hurt my dear mother more than she already has been...!
: I don't know what you want me to say...
: (If it's true that someone sent for her...who could it have been?)
: I can't take this anymore. My body, my soul are at their limits...
: If you can't give me an answer, maybe I should erase you, too. I'd be erasing all of my worries in the bargain...

: Hey! What are you doing!?
: You're through meddling in my affairs!
: No! Wait!
???: You all right, Ethan?

: Why, you...
: Glad I followed ya, kid. I mean, how could I not? You were white as a sheet!
: You have a knack for sticking your nose where it doesn't belong, Derek...
: Hey, Irving! Long time no see.
: After all these years--is this your idea of a reunion?

Reminder that in this timeline, Derek wouldn't have headed over to Irving's to discuss the accident because he wasn't investigating it.

: This doesn't concern you.

: ...
: I'm calling the cops.

And he starts dialing.

: You Kairos boys are all the same. You exist solely to torture me...
: Hey, look at Ethan and tell me--who's torturing who here?
: I'm trying to fight against the violence you've both committed!
: You people never learn, do you... I guess doing away with your parents wasn't enough, huh?

Most people have probably figured this out by now, given how his shadow's plainly visible at the beginning, but it's nice to get a confirmation.

: ...?
: Hey! Y-you have my...
: Ha ha ha ha ha ha... You just noticed? Unbelievable!
: How do you expect to put up much of a fight if you're that slow? You've killed my mother--you and your father both. It's only fair.
: Your family has terrorized everyone dear to me...
: Look who's talking...

There's the sound of something glowing.

: !!

Irving: I'm going to save my mother... It's all I can do now.

: Kori!?
: No! Don't go in there!!
: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

Kori: Aaah!
Ethan: We've got to catch up with him, and pronto!

And then the Hole closes, and the world begins to shift.

: !!! (No! It's...it's too late...)

Ethan: :: pant pant ::
: (Irving was headed for the scene of that bus accident, 35 years ago... What could he have changed--and by how much...?)

Ethan's phone goes off.

Kori: Ethan...where are you?
Ethan: I'm...at home, it looks like.
Kori: Can you come see me? I'm where Aeon used to be.
Ethan: Yeah...sure. (Has something happened to her? Her voice sounds so weak... Wait a minute...where Aeon USED to be...?) I'll be there as soon as I can. Wait for me.

: (He's okay...!)
: What's going on? You're up early. Sorry, but I've gotta split. Help yourself to breakfast.
: Oh, uh, sure...
: Listen, Uncle Derek, can we go out for coffee again today?
: What? If it's coffee you want, just find yourself any old cafe and stop in.
: Huh?
: I have to do research all day. I don't have time to sit around sipping coffee with you.

And he's gone. This is the opportunity to note that I messed up and missed the flashback of Derek in the maid cafe from last update, but as you can see, it doesn't matter so much.

: (He's back to his "old self"--a freelance writer...)

That's, uh...new.

: You came...thank you...
: What's wrong? (She looks exhausted.)

: I... Irving...he tricked me.
: Tricked you? How?
: I can't stand myself right now... Save me, Ethan...

Kori: Ethan...save me...!

: ...Yes. I owe you an explanation. I'm sorry I'm so out of it. ...
: I was pulled through a Hole when I was sixteen years old. The one who pulled me through...was your father, Ethan.
: My father?
: Someone had pushed me off a roof... But when I came to, I was in a classroom, unscathed. Your father had pulled me through. He had opened a Hole from three days in the future. He said "When I find a way to keep you from dying, I'll put things back the way they were."
: My father said that?
: Uh-huh. So here I am, forever sixteen...and waiting.

My guess is that's been going on for maybe 30 years.

: I graduated high school and kept out of sight...this whole time. Always waiting...even as I keep getting involved in worlds changed by the Hollow Pen.
: ......
: But your father disappeared... ...without fulfilling his promise.
: Was that...12 years ago?
: That's right.
: That's when Irving came up to me and said he'd make things right.
: Irving did?
: He said the Kairos family didn't have it in them to save me...
: .........
: ...What could I do? I helped him out.
: But... In the end, all he did was use me.
: Used me to spy on the next bearer of the Hollow Pen...that's you. He wasn't thinking of me at all...
: Kori... (How long must she have been suffering like this?)
: (I wish I could help her... I really do...)
: ...So what happened to Irving?
: I doubt he went into the past just for the heck of it.
: Yeah...But he didn't change the past where your dad pulled me through.
: I mean...I'm still here, aren't I?
: So that past is safe, at least.
: Huh?
: What is it?
: Ethan...did you burn your hand?

Ethan: (What IS this?)

: Our secret hideout--it's burning! (I remember now...I got this burn escaping from the blaze.)
: A fire...? That's not right. No, no, the tree that was here--it was struck by lightning and toppled over. There was no fire...
: (Is this Irving's doing?)
: Say, where are the others? Were they in the hideout?
: !! (Yeah--what happened to the rest of the gang?)
: C'mon, Kori--let's get to school! If we go now, we just might make it before the bell!
: But I...
: ?
: I'm not a student there. Not the me I am now. I can't just show up in class there anymore.
: Huh...?
: Irving made it so I could get into Kako and keep an eye on you.
: ......
: It looks like Aeon's changed a lot, along with the way I'm being treated.
: Kori...
: ...I'll see if anything else has been changed.
: We'll meet up later. That's the most efficient course of action.
: ...All right. Be careful. I'll get in touch with you later.
: Bye.
: (...Guess I'll head to school all by myself, then...)
: (How are Vin and the rest of the gang...!?)

: (Vin, Ben, Morris--they're all gone!)

A door slides open in the background.

: !
: I-Irving!

: Irving! Why, you...
: Sure are noisy first thing in the morning, eh, Ethan?
: And the name's Jack. Jack Twombly.

There's the sound of laughter.

: !!!!! T-Twombly!?

: Why so uptight? Did you forget your breakfast today?
: (Irving...what have you done this time?)

Jack: Hey!

Something is strange here. Kori said that she was pulled through a hole three days after she fell from the roof by Ethan's father. I guess the rules are different for people than objects moved through holes so instead of just going missing for three days, she became unstuck in time... however, even after Ethan's parents disappeared, there was still one day when Kori had never been in Ethan's class. Her suddenly becoming part of his class was what led to Ashley dropping the money for Ethan's present.

Irving genuinely thinks that we're interfering with saving his mother, but Ethan did try, and Ethan's mother did seem willing to be saved and not die, so what's causing her to still die? Is it that she has a Hollow Pen and her fate can't be changed? Hmmm.

Things are getting more and more nuts and I love it.

They're not going to re-address it since they've technically already done so, so I'll give the reason.

That was Irving writing Kori into Kako High. He approached her after Ethan's parents disappeared and got her to be his spy, and the first action that required was getting Kori into Ethan's school. This triggered the events of the first chapter.

Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up. Still though, I get the feeling that there's a third player out there. Someone arranged an accident for the waitress, and I can't think of any reason why Irving would do that, he seems more interested in saving his mother and punishing Ethan's family. Killing a random waitress doesn't seem to fit.

Update 24: Only you can prevent vacant lot fires

Ethan: (Their names are missing. They're not even students here.)

All these new portraits only appear in this scene as far as I remember. The effort is nice, but it's a pain to clean.

*Conversation: Ashley*
: Ashley!
: Wh-what do you want? We're in the middle of class here.
: Sorry about that. Listen, where's Vin?
: ...!
: He passed away. Now stop asking me such awful questions. Goodbye!

And away she goes.

*Conversation: Emily*
: Hey, Emily.
: ...

She runs off too.

Gym Teacher: Hey, you there! Yeah, you! Get back to class, now!
: Yes, sir...
: (She can't mean...is Vin really DEAD dead...?)

Nah, she was speaking metaphorically about his basketball career. No? No.

: (And Ben...and Morris, too? Did they all die in that fire...?)

I wonder where our destination is.
Random note: Aaron's hanging around in the park looking for dropped change. I have no idea why.

Pretend to look surprised for me.

: Of course. In the newspaper archives, right?

I think after all the times we've been here in the past few days, Sara's come to expect us here. Of course, that's not true in this timeline, but still.

: What would you like me to look up for you?

*By event*
: (It would have been before the lightning strike...)
: It would be ten or so years ago now. There was a fire at a secret hideout--no...
: A fire in a vacant lot. Are there any articles about that?
: One moment, please...
: There's one match. I'll copy it for you.

Article: Vacant Lot Arson posted:

: (So it was arson after all... And Irving was probably behind it, too.)

Let's clear up our flashbacks.

Flashback: Vacant Lot Arson posted:

And now to fix our problem.

On another note, I may have been wrong about how the Pen's limit decreases. It may actually just have a static maximum decrease every chapter, and I was just horrible at noticing it between chapters 1 and 2. I'll probably go back and correct myself once this is all over. One thing first, though.

Remember how Vin fell off that ladder way back when? We're fixing that now, too.

*Examine*
: (This ladder must be where Vin hurt himself.)

That's all he says as he reties the string. In an awkward moment, this is the first time I realize you're only able to make one change per Hole. I can reach the fire from here, but I can't interact with it. Glad I didn't fix the fire first! So I close the Hole, and reopen another one at the fire.

*Examine*
: (If I could only undo this fire somehow...!)

And with that, the fire's out. So we close our Hole.

===

===

: (What happened to Vin and the rest of the gang?)
???: Well, hello.

Jack: Good job. You've "undone" the fire at the vacant lot!
: You're the one who started it!
: That wasn't me.
: Don't be ridiculous! If not you, who was it?
: Irving.
: What are you talking about?
: My name is Jack. I'm not Irving.

With the sound of footsteps, our third player enters the game.

: Well, if it isn't Kori!
: Kori, wait! It's not him! It's not Irving!
: THAT Irving has already vanished, you mean?
: Bingo!
: Huh...?
: You look utterly perplexed. Allow me to eludicate.
: Let's say...I know. Imagine I have a million dollars here.

Ethan: ?? (What's he going on about?) If you send a million dollars five seconds into the past... But that money is there five seconds ago, too.

Let's be a disappointment to Jack Irving.

*Answer: You'd have two million dollars*
: Hmph. You're dumber than you look.
: Say that again!
: Try it, then, if you think it'll work! You'd be a multi-millionaire in the blink of an eye.

Still being a disappointment.

*Answer: Who knows?*
: Now, now. You're not even trying.

Okay, fine.

*Answer: You'd still have one million dollars*

Jack: See? All you have to do is use your noggin once in a while.
: Permit me to explain.
: Why does it remain one million dollars? In short... What you place in the past vanishes when it reaches the moment at which you put it there.
: It's true that there'll be two million dollars for those five seconds in the past...
: But once that "moment of placing" is reached, it ceases to exist. That's what's happened to me and Irving.
: So that means... He...no longer exists?
: At the moment he escaped through the Hole, the man called Irving ceased to exist...
: (So...is all this over?)
: And now... ...it's my turn. Jack's turn.
: !?
: !
: The man who's been ordering me around is gone--at last!
: I couldn't stand having such a close resemblance to him...
: And now you've become Mr. Twombly--is that it?
: Heh heh...I suppose that wasn't very nice of me... But what choice did I have? I didn't want to be Irving anymore.
: Why, you...!
: One's enough of anyone. Who needs two of the same person? I've surpassed him in many ways.
: And now that I have my freedom, I intend to prove to you how far I've come!
: So I'm terribly sorry, Kori, but I'm not Irving anymore.
: ...Same difference.
: You're cute when you act all tough! But listen, Ethan...
: ...What?
: Don't think I'm done avenging my mother's murder.
: Huh...?
: Where's Irving? I thought he went off to save her.
: Yeah, that didn't work out.
: How so?
: He saved me and his mother from that bus accident, all right.
: But it wasn't long after that that his mother died in an accident.
: !! You're kidding...! (Just like Mom and Dad...!)
: I was a fool to believe his empty promises.
: ......
: And so the curtain falls on the pitiful tale that was Irving's life...
: Now it's time for Revenge Part Deux--Revenge: The Return! Wait until you see what I have cooked up for you...
: Wh-what!?
: Heh heh...heh heh heh... Wah ha ha ha ha ha! Farewell!

And after chewing the scenery more than just a bit, he's gone.

{Soundtrack: Silence}

: Hey!
: Jack...

: What do we do now, Ethan...?
: I think we should see if anything else has changed. I've got to check in on Vin and the gang, too.
: I'll do some looking around myself--see if things are how I remember them.
: Okay. Let's be in touch if either one of us finds anything.
: Sounds good. Bye.

And off she goes.

: (What's up with the gang--and with Ashley?)

If your maximum pen uses decrease each chapter, that would make the warning that the pen uses the owner's own time mean something for the gameplay. It might end up boxing the player in and forcing them to make a choice when they need to change two things, but only have one charge left.

Honestly a huge novelty alarm clock is probably a much more sensible present for Ethan, (who Emily hardly knew) than that expensive antique clock.

I don't know if we can save Mr. Twombly, Irving could have replaced him at anytime... But hold on... Irving appears the same age as he was in the present. But he went back 35 years into the past. Shouldn't he look another 35 years older than what he does? ... And more importantly... why did Irving call Twombly "the man who's been ordering me around"? Ethan and Kori didn't seem to notice that, but I did. I don't think it was just because Twombly might have been Irving's teacher for 4 years.

Irving seems like the sort of dipshit who would take everything personally. How he managed to replace Twombly is still unknown though.

This bit's a little tricky to figure out.

What we can decipher is that the "Jack" we see is the Irving Onegin of this timeline, who I'll call Irving B. The one who we've seen up till now is Irving A. Irving A went back to the time of the accident of timeline B 35 years ago, to begin doing his stuff. At that point, there's two Irvings in existence, the infant Irving B, and the adult Irving A. We know from Kori that going through a Hole stops your Time, which specifically also stops you from aging. My guess is that Irving A replaced Mr. Twombly sometime between the time of the accident and when Irving B started high school.

Irving B continues to use his Pen just as Irving A once had, aging as a result, likely directed by Irving A. In the meantime, Irving A also torches the secret hideout, but doesn't bother to have Irving B start up Aeon for whatever reason.

When time finally comes around to the events of this morning, Irving A pops out of existence, and Irving B takes his place as "Jack Twombly".

This is my best guess for the events of this timeline.

Update 25: Dammit, Not Again

: Yeah, you look really worn out. What gives?
: The state basketball finals are coming up.
: You want us to come be your cheering section or what?
: Bah! Who needs your support?
: (So Vin's on the basketball team...)
: So now I've got a full course of training to get through every day.
: That's why I'm so beat!
: Well, what can you do? It's only 'til the playoffs are over.

: Good luck in the finals.
: Huh...? Oh, uh...thanks...
: I'll see what I can do...y'know.

: !! What are you talking about, man?
: Oh, s-sorry...

: Huh!? B-Ben! You're okay!
: Wha-a-at?
: Ethan's pretty beat, Ben.
: S-sorry, guys... (What the heck happened? Jack did something--I know he did. What could he have changed...?)
: Yeah...everyone's exhausted.
: Of course...with what happened to Morris and all...
: (Huh?) Wh-what happened?
: C'mon, Ethan! Snap out of it!
: You've gotta face the facts eventually... Morris...Morris is gone!

: !!
: They killed him--right there in the classroom!
: His neck...they snapped it like a twig...aw, Morris...
: ...Why? Why...!?
: Morrisssss...
: (Morris...was murdered? I need to find out more--and fast.)
: (Maybe Vin and Ben can tell me something.)

They say that, but the actual thing you have to do is confirm some flashbacks. Most of the ones are the same, but the relevant one is...

Flashback: Empty Classroom posted:

Once you've seen that, talking to them opens up the conversation.

*Question: Who did it?*
: If we only knew...
: We have no idea. Which of course means no one's above suspicion.

*Question: When did it happen?*
: Ten days ago now--no, even longer, I think.
: Yeah...school was out for a while there.
: I see...
: (Could that have been...Jack, in that school flashback...? I'm almost certain Morris was in that flashback at first.)

*Question: Where was he?*
: I think he was at his own desk when...when it happened.

The nametag says Ethan here, but it's pretty clearly Ben speaking.

: You sure? I heard they found him on the floor.
: With his neck snapped.
: ...Something like that...
: But why would someone do that to Morris...?

*Question: Who did it?, reprise*
: We don't know...
: They say it may have been someone from the school...

*Question: When did it happen?, reprise*
: They found him...the morning of May 2nd, was it?
: (So he was killed on May 1, I take it? ...Maybe that's when that flashback was from.)

*Question: Where was he?, reprise*
: Probably his desk.
: I bet he was staying late and studying, like he always does...er, did.

And that's all.

: (I'm starting to get a pretty good picture here.) ...So you guys haven't been at Chronos lately, huh.
: Chronos? No...not for a while.
: We might never go back. Frankly, I would feel funny not having someone to talk to... And I don't know if my appetite for crepes will ever be the same.
: Yeah, you're right... (So that's why Ben's okay... He never met Aaron at Chronos in the first place.)
: How about you, Ethan? You sleeping okay after all this craziness?
: Don't worry about him. He's got that alarm clock, remember?
: Oh yeah--from Ashley and Emily. You using it?
: Huh? Oh, er... Yeah, well, you know...
: So anyway...I'd better get home.
: Yeah, me too.
: (The guys are taking this really hard. I'd better help Morris ASAP.)

: This is far from over, Ethan...

: ...Mrowrrr...
: My bedroom... (What's Jack done this time?)

Ethan's phone goes off. I spent the full time listening to it, and it's an 8-bit version of the opening's chorus.

: ...Hello?
Ben: It's me...
: Oh, hey, Ben. What's up?
: (Thank goodness--Ben's all right.)
Ben: Listen, you want to go over to Vin's place?
: Vin's?
Ben: I just kinda wanted to see him, and since we don't have school today... This whole Ashley thing must be really rough on him.
: !!!
: Wh-what Ashley and Emily thing...? (The past--it keeps changing and changing! Rats!)

This is not a transcription error. I'd bet Emily was mentioned in Ben's sentence as well, but that got cut for some reason that shouldn't be space. There are longer lines.

: Did--did something happen to those two?
Ben: What do you mean? C'mon, Ethan--stop playing dumb.
: Oh...er, I'm sorry.
: (Could Ashley have been...)
: ...Killed? Ashley and Emily both, murdered...?
Ben: ...Yeah, probably. I'd say that was no accident. I mean, they were beaten black and blue, right?
: (...I knew it!)
Ben: When will it end? Our neighborhood must be cursed... Everyone's saying it's the same killer who did in Morris... Hope they find him soon--I'm terrified...
: Ben...
Ben: So are you up for a visit to Vin's house? I'd rather not go alone, but I'd gladly go with you.
: Sure--I'll meet you there.
Ben: Thanks. See you at Vin's house.
: (...Jack...! He killed them in that Chronos flashback, I'm sure of it!)

Apparently we do have to go meet them, but it's not exactly a long or interesting meeting. I'm not even bothering to get a shot of the scene.

: Hey, Vin...let me and Ethan know if there's anything we can do.
: ...Ashley... Why...why her?

That's it, but apparently it's necessary to proceed. I tried going on without it and wasn't able to investigate.

Let's see if we can save Morris first--

: Did something happen here?
: What's it to you?
: I live nearby, and I'm worried that something's going on...
: Live nearby, eh? Have you seen anyone suspicious?
: N-no... So, er, what happened?
: We got a tip pointing us to some clues about that serial killer...
: Huh?
: Uh-oh--I've said too much. Come on, now, move along.
: Y-yes, sir.
: (Looks like I won't be able to go inside for a while.)

Well, that was weird. Back to Ashley and Emily, I guess. We've already done something similar before, so it's pretty clear how to resolve this.

This is new, though.

: Ashley's in my class...I can't believe what happened to her.

: It was after school... the day she was killed. Something like 4:30. She was here, looking at something.
: (Really...?)

I actually don't like this part of the game. It feels like Irving is able to do changes far too quickly after the last set. Considering Ethan keeps getting warped to fairly random locations, Irving should be getting warped around too. Yet Ethan barely gets to blink before Irving does the next change.
