Huh, for years I'd been under the impression that Gilgilgan was a Banpresto Original monster, but looking it up now it turns out I was very wrong.

Mecha Gilgilgan is indeed a Banpresto Original, created to be yet another high-HP unit in order to slow the player down. The series really likes throwing those kinds of things at you.

More specifically, it's the first Banpresto Original, being the final boss of SRW1. Masaki's just the first Original that isn't a modification of an existing unit.

Nah, Mecha Gilgilgan wasn't in 1, that was just regular Gil. The Mecha variant first showed up in 2.

Sadly, even though it did indeed pop up in Impact, we don't get to see it here, even though it looks rad as hell. There's an absolute ton of other stuff from the myriad of Mazinger movies in this game though.

As I recall, Impact used an adapted version of Alpha Gaiden's engine, and @G had Mechagilgilgan and a shitload of Ghosts X-9 in a gimmick level, so that might be why they could easily reuse it.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

And we’ve arrived in Chongqing, with the famous Professor Plato thanking Bright and Douglas for escorting the D Weapons over. He invites them to have some Chinese dumplings but Bright passes. A shame, as they’re quite tasty.
A bit farther away, Kaine wonders who the old guy is, though Tap has no idea. Light’s getting a “scientist” vibe from him but can’t place him. They’re interrupted when Douglas hits them with a verbal slap for their rudeness towards the professor. NOW Kaine figures out who it is.

The door opens, bringing in Dianne and she confirms to Kaine that he’s dealing with Linda’s father. Speaking of, the girl herself is also present (the blonde) – it’s been a long while since she’s last seen Kaine. As the guy freaks out that she was here, the tomboyish Rose also steps in.
Tap and Kaine are very surprised, having thought the three of them were still working at the refugee camp. Dianne will explain but, first, a formal introduction: this IS professor Langue Plato, creator of the Metal Armors and defector of the Giganos. Kaine’s having a bit of a hard time picturing this guy as Linda’s dad but he admits she took after her mother.
Douglas rather sternly tells Kaine to treat the good professor more respectfully – he is in fact the single greatest person the Federation has in the fight against the Giganos. Plato turns serious at this, saying that he's anything but; rather, he created that which caused the whole conflict in the first place.

It could well be said that it was his Metal Armors that enabled Guiltorre to wage his war and, thus, he seeks to atone for his sins by helping expedite the end of this conflict. That is why he brought the Dragonars to the Federation. Granted, many unforeseen events happened, which led to Kaine, Tap and Light being dragged into the whole mess. For that, Plato is truly sorry.
Kaine says it’s all under the bridge and, to top it off, Tap adds that they’re just about being dismissed from duty. So, that problem’s taken care of itself.

Bright raises the question of a few rumors he’d heard before, saying that the professor had died right after the war began, but Dianne says those were spread by the Giganos; all in the interest of maintaining morale and concealing his defection. In fact, she and her peers at the intelligence bureau were the ones who orchestrated his escape in the first place.
Tap’s shocked to find that that’s her job but she reminds him that she DID tell them back during their “going away party”, before the pilots were sent to the Aquapolis. Tap figured she was joking… but, regardless, Dianne’s mission since has been to stay with Linda and keep her safe. Light and co were never told that but Dianne points to the old “to fool the enemy, you must first fool your friends” standard.
Alright, Tap gets why Dianne and Linda are here but what about Rose? To answer that, she points to the glittering insignia on her collar. She’s been commissioned as a second lieutenant, you see, as she and Linda have been working as Plato’s assistants. And, for that matter, Linda’s a first lieutenant now. It slowly dawns on Kaine that their respective girls outrank them all, still basic airmen third class.

But Rose tells them not to stand on ceremony with them – just act as they did back when they were in the Idaho. Tap, however, is concerned about something else; namely, why in blazes did Rose join the military in the first place?! He tells her she should know very well how dangerous battle can be. Why wouldn't she choose the relative safety of the refugee camps over this base?
Rose says that she's here of her own volition: “I want to bring this war to an end as quickly as possible. If it doesn’t, there’s only be more and more people losing their families, as I did…”

Tap can only stay quiet after that but professor Plato is forced to cut the conversation short. Our situation is still critical, so they need to move fast: he wants to Dragonars brought to the factory, so they can get the combat data from Kaine and the others and start the Dragoon mass-production.
These mecha, incorporating the strong points of the three Dragonars, while also being both capable of unaided flight (unlike the MP MSs) and cheap to produce, should really help swing things in the Federation's favor on the front lines.

At the end of the day, Plato says, the situation is too complex to be reversed by a small bunch of special units like ours. Despite our strength, we cannot take part in all battlefields everywhere. Bright very much concurs with him.
On the other hand, however, the Dragoons cannot contend with the more unusual kinds of enemies like the Martial Successors and their Boson Jump-equipped units, the Tekkoryu mechs or the Dolems and Angels. That kind of stuff can only still be countered by us, so there’s still plenty of work on our plate.

Kaine and Tap are in deep thought after hearing all that but, regardless, professor Plato turns to them and says that, once the Dragonars’ data is in, their mission will be done. Which means their pilot registries will be cancelled – just as promised.
With that, he figures it’s best if we hurry: recently, an elite Giganos elite squadron has been attacking the Dragoon factories. Plato figures it’s Gon Jem – the “Disgrace of Giganos” – and his hated crew; once they hear of the Nahel Argama’s arrival, they’re expected to mount an all-out attack.
Kaine’s surprised that the base is doing so well despite facing these attacks and Plato says it’s all due to a rather skilled pilot. He should be arriving any second now…

And arrive, he does: Lt. Quattro Bajeena! He and Bright haven’t seen each other since the Gryps War’s Operation Maelstrom, and the captain is surprised to find him here.
It seems like he assisted in the professor’s escape and has been leading the Chongqing base’s defense team ever since. Still, Bright wouldn’t have expected Quattro to still be working with the Federation…
“It’s true that the Federation didn’t improve even after its battle with Haman… but I cannot sit by and watch as the Giganos Empire becomes a second Neo Zeon. Moreover, it seems this era still needs the strength of a man like me,” he says. Bright will not complain if he’s offering to help us again – Quattro’s more than welcome!

Later, Douglas reports how the Dragonars are already having their combat data taken in. That’s a load off Kaine’s shoulders, finally. After it’s all complete, it’ll be time for them to be discharged… granted, until the war’s actually over, they’ll have to stay under military supervision in an installation somewhere.
Kaine asks what gives but Light figures that’s to be expected: they HAVE been in contact with a military secret. In fact, they'd probably have already been put in front of a firing squad under ordinary circumstances. Kaine still isn’t happy but Dianne says this was the best that could be arranged, so he’ll have to make do with it.
Still, Tap asks, that means they won’t have to fight anymore, right? Right, they’ll be taken off the Nahel Argama team; Light also figures being cooped up in some base instead of out in the field will also greatly increase their survival chances.

Dianne also tells them that the upper brass values what the pilots did, and that they're all eligible for special military pensions and a reward after their discharge. How much? A total of two million bucks a piece.
Tap’s ecstatic: with that kind of cash, he could get his whole family living the good life and even start his own business. Indeed, that’s ONE of the options being presented to them.

Douglas says that the other option is for them to remain in the military and keep on fighting as part of the Nahel Argama team. In that case, they’d even be awarded the Salem Medal which is pretty much reserved for war heroes… but they’d forfeit the cash.
Tap scoffs at that “choice” and outright refuses, but Kaine doesn’t seem as certain. What gives? They just gotta hang on inside some base for a bit and, boom, two million bucks. And they won’t even need to fight anymore!
Still, Kaine is doubtful. He asks Dianne how long it’ll take to get their registries deleted and, considering it’ll take the better part of today to get the Dragonar data, it’s expected to only happen tomorrow. In that case, Kaine asks them to let him think his answer until then – Light also makes the same request. As they leave, Tap runs in pursuit and not in the best of moods.

When Dianne asks, Douglas confesses that he doesn’t know what they’ll choose. Still, it’s only thanks to those three that they managed to deliver the units intact. Even though those three have been a major headache to him, Douglas admits that he’ll miss them if they leave.
Oh? Does that mean he’s rooting for them to stay? N-No, of course not! They’ll obviously keep on being a pain in his rear end if they don’t quit, so Douglas wants them gone pronto.
Hmhmm…

Back to our crew’s lounge, everyone’s watching as the Dragonar team returns; Kouji explains to Light that everyone was curious to see how things would go with them. Tap figures their choice is made and proclaims that they’ll be taking off.
Akira asks if he wouldn’t reconsider it but Tap sees no reason: it’s not like he started doing this because he gets a kick out of fighting. Akira doesn’t either but… Daisuke tells him to let it be. If this was their decision, then we haven’t the right to oppose it.
“Yeah. It’s best that cowards leave the ship ASAP,” Tetsuya sniffs. Light only sighs at his razor-sharp tongue but Kaine doesn’t appreciate it. Is he calling them cowards? Tetsuya doesn’t see how he could’ve made it any clearer but, again, it falls on Daisuke to try and calm things. If people don’t have to fight, then they shouldn’t.
“But those who have the means to fight are a different case. Throughout the world there are people who die without ever having a chance to protect what is dear to them; those who voluntarily walk away from that battle are nothing if not cowards,” Tetsuya protests and it seems to cut deep with Kaine.

Tap, however, argues that he never joined this war of his own free will – every bit of fighting he’s done thus far has been merely in order to survive. Tetsuya asks why he didn't simply flee all this time, then. Surely he had many chances to do so.
Tap can't answer that, and Kouji and Freed tell him to leave it be - if there is to be a parting of ways, at least let it be with a smile. Tetsuya puts in one last word: “if you leave the Dragonars now, you’ll regret it for the rest of your lives.”
Tap figures he’ll regret it if he doesn’t leave, so Tetsuya tells him to do whatever the hell he wants. Sounds good and Tap steps out the room. Light observes that this seems to be the very definition of walls talking to each other, and Tetsuya notes drily that he had figured the Dragonar pilots had more guts than this. Kaine seems twice as uncertain now.

Professor Plato peruses the Dragonar combat data and Kaine, Tap and Light exceeded all his expectations; Dianne sees that it wasn’t by chance that they survived this long. Indeed, they managed to make great use of the Dragonars’ proficiencies.
On that matter, Plato asks Linda about a certain other job that’s being done right now – the frames and parts have already been replaced, only the weapons are left. Quite faster than expected and Linda chalks it up to the production line the professor set up beforehand. They should be ready for some startup tests tomorrow… though this work might be for naught.

When Linda asks, Dianne relates how Kaine and Light needed time to think, despite Tap’s desire to bail out. Rose sighs at how the guy doesn’t get it at all but Linda doesn’t want to force any of them – even if it’ll mean wasting those three units.
Plato asks Dianne to call the pilots to him. Not to tell them about "that", but to get their feel on some Dragoons that had the Dragonar data ported into – what he has in mind is a small mock battle.

We cut elsewhere, finding prettyboy Jin reporting to uglyman Gon Jem that a certain duo has arrived. From what Gon’s been told, they want to use their time with his squad to put a certain prototype through its paces?
It’s the Medius crew and Albero confirms; when he introduces himself, Gon figures he heard the name somewhere. Min (pink hair) asks if they know each other but, no, it’s Gon’s first time meeting him. Still, the name is familiar, though he can’t place it… Jin quips that the years may be catching up to him.
Elde Mitte introduces herself at Min’s request and Jin’s quick to leer at the pretty lady. Would Albero care to “lend” her to him? He’ll make it worth his while.
Albero flatly refuses and Jin doesn’t like his attitude – he better watch his back on dark nights. It’s Min’s turn to take a jab at him, sniffing at how unsightly his jealousy is.

Goru, with his massive chin, is jealous of Albero and Ganan suggests he can always go and get together with Min. “Get real! Who’d ever want this fat gorilla?!” she snaps; Goru, who seems to be a bit touched in the head, freaks out and starts yelling that HE’S NO GORILLA!
The guy starts firing wildly with a machine gun and Ganan tells Goru to mind his manners, lest he worry their guests… like Elde is, right now. Min figures their squad’ll be a bit rough for a fine lady like her, though Elde tells her not to worry: her upbringing isn't as nice as it might look.

Min wonders aloud how long Elde's bravado will last, and Elde says it only has to last until her work here is done, at which point they'll leave. Jin sighs that spirited women like her are his type but, again, Ganan tells him to drop it. Her elderly knight is watching.Jin is more than willing to throw down but, inwardly, Albero is a bit surprised that this is an even more lawless bunch than he'd heard.

It’s then that Gon Jem remembers where he heard the name Albero Est – the commander of the Cry Wolves squad, special forces of the Federation filled with pretty skilled folks. But, with said commander here, Jin has to wonder whether he turned traitor or if his crew got wiped out.
Gon doesn't so much care about his past, but rather about what he intends to do now. Albero says that he simply wants to collect combat data from tangling with the Nahel Argama squad, and has no intention of stealing any of Gon's men's glory.

Albero offers to play decoy and lure the Nahel Argama while the rest of them lie in wait to attack. They don't even need to attack, but in that case, he'll withdraw. Finally, Albero even offers to pay Gon double for whatever he and Elde consume here.
Gon likes the cut of his jib and looks forward to seeing what the ex-Cry Wolf can do. He’ll, indeed, leave it up to Albero to draw the Argama team away; Gon tells him to make his own plan and execute whenever it looks good. Though they may or may not go along with it, depending on how they feel like. Albero harrumphs a confirmation.

Mission 18 (Chongqing Route) – Burning Heart, Flying High

Time for the Dragoon test and Kaine really likes the mech. It’s supposed to be even stronger than the Dragonars, even, and Light figures the Giganos will be shaking in their boots with these on the Federation’s side.
On this subject, Kaine asks Plato what will become the Dragonars themselves after they’ve left the army. They’ll be scrapped as soon as data collection is complete since they WERE originally made solely for that purpose; and since the mechs systems and whatnot have been fine tuned for these three pilots, it’d be very difficult to find new guys.
Kaine is mad that the Dragonars are being fired but Tap just shrugs at it. Light looks at it like they’ve reached the end of their life spans but Kaine isn’t taking it: “How are you guys OK with that? Think of all the times the Dragonars saved our asses!”
Tap knows but says that’s the way it is and, at least, Light points out that the Dragonars’ data will live on in the Dragoons; so it’s not like they’ll vanish completely. Even so, Kaine’s not letting this go. When Tap wonders when he’s gotten so attached to the things, Kaine protests that he always cares for stuff that’s helped him.

Professor Plato cuts in, ready to start the test, and Kaine asks if it wouldn’t be possible to stash the Dragonars away in a museum like the Mazinger. Plato tells him that the Dragonars are weapons and hanging onto an unused weapon is nothing but a waste.
But what if they stay in the army? Will the mechs be spared then? Light is a bit taken aback by how quickly Kaine’s making his mind and Tap still refuses to stay, reminding Kaine that their reward and pension would go up in smoke.
“Well, good to see that I’m not as cold-hearted as you two! Those Dragonars helped us so many times and they’re about to get trashed – but so long as you have your cash, it’s all good, right?!” Kaine yells. “And what the hell are you doing, playing white knight to some mechs?!” Tap fires back.

Douglas interrupts, telling all three of them to shut it and get on with the test. This will consist of AI-controlled Metal Armors to destroy, which Kaine moodily acknowledges. As the targets pop out, Douglas wonders if Kaine and the others will be able to pull this off since this is their first time piloting Dragoons.
They should, as Plato designed them to be easy to handle – wouldn’t make for a good mass-production model otherwise. Of course, because of that, they've also got a few limitations...
Ben has faith in those three and asks them to give their last mission everything they have.

For MP units, the Dragoons have a lot of stuff going on. They pretty much blow every UC Gundam grunt bots out of the water. On top of having equal stats to the Dragonars (and higher armor), they’re packing both short and long range weapons from the D-1 and D-2. The D-3 bit has given them all strong EWACs and jammers so, yes, these are absolutely game-changers.

As always, share those EWAC auras around to conserve SP.

: (God drat it… Isn’t there anything we can do for the Dragonars?)

The Gebais’ shields still keep them from being oneshotted.

Tap, as always, likes to take things on the chin.

The distant mooks are new: Dein MAFFUs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vv2yuHupzYk
And here’s the Dragoons’ stronger weapon.

Enemy Phase!

Now, it’s cleanup time. All but one mook are weakened and that one just got oneshotted by a crit from Kaine.

And there they all go.

Linda confirms all targets down, though Rose reports that it took longer than the estimated time. But, how, Douglas asks? These units were tuned with their data, so there shouldn’t be any compatibility issues. Professor Plato sighs that the fault may lie with the Dragoons themselves.
Regardless, this served to identify a problem to be studied so Plato calls an end to the test. As Rose calls everyone to the hangar, Light figures the end of the line for them – and the Dragonars – is right around the corner now.
Tap sees the bummed look in Kaine’s face and tells him not to get any ideas – he’s still 100% leaving. But that’s a matter for another time: the alarm sounds, signaling an enemy raid. All the more reason for them to haul rear end to the hangar right the hell now, Tap figures.

On Bright’s command, Torres reports a force of about fifty Metal Armors some thirty kilometers east of the base and they’re headed right this way; looks like they really are coming to level the whole place. So, Quattro asks Bright to leave him to guard the base while the Nahel Argama team intercepts the enemy.
Bright agrees and is already leaving when Kaine asks them to wait – he’s coming with. The enemy’s coming right over, so how can the three of them, alone, be running off to take shelter? Duke and Sai, however, object that there’s no need for them to fight anymore, so they should let us handle it.

As the Nahel Argama takes off, Quattro deploys with a bevy of Dragoons and tells Kaine and co to head inside. If they stay here, they might be drawn into the battle proper. Tap doesn’t need to be told twice but they’re interrupted when another alarm sounds: it’s the enemy!
The Gon Jem squad pops out of the woodwork with a bunch of troops and, seeing the actual Gon Jem command units here, Quattro now realizes that the massive force due east was a feint.
Gon is very happy to see the shiny Dragoon prototypes here to welcome them, though Ganan takes them to be rather puny-looking compared to the rumors. Min agrees: those things are centuries away from being able to tangle with them.
Jin confirms that the Nahel Argama took Albero’s bait hook, line and sinker – grandpa's got skills to back his attitude, Ganan admits. With that, Gon has Jin jam the base’s comms to stop us from being called back.
Indeed, when Rose tries, she can’t establish a line with the ship.

Now that all hell has broken loose, Kaine only sees one option: they need to join in on the fight as well or Linda, Rose and everyone else will be in serious danger. Tap doesn’t like it but he concedes his point.
Th Gon Jem squad is moving in and Linda knows the situation is very much against the defenders, so professor Plato makes a request of her: “have those three units ready for launch immediately.”
Dianne asks if he’s going to have Kaine, Tap and Light use those for this and, indeed, he is. After all, those mechs were developed with that in mind. They haven’t been tested yet but Plato says they’ll just have bet on their capacity of overcoming hardships.
The professor gets in touch with Quattro to let him know what’s up, asking that he buy them time to get the machines ready. He’s surprised but sees that we’ve no other choice right now and confirms.

With all that in mind, Quattro asks Kaine’s group to keep at the rear; Kaine’s not having it, asking Quattro’s team to watch THEIR backs. Light agrees, saying that they’ve a lot more experienced handling Dragonar-style mechs than the faceless mooks that the lieutenant’s brought.
Quattro insists, telling that Plato will be sortieing some new prototypes that need guarding for now. “New prototypes? He had something other than the Dragoons here?” Kaine asks; “And who did they choose as the pilots? We didn’t hear of any new guys coming around!” Light adds.
“No, the pilots are already here,” Quattro huffs and Kaine doesn’t get the message. But, whatever, the priority now is keeping the base safe, so Quattro’s off to lead the charge.

We can’t lose any named guys but the Dragoon mooks are freebies. Which is good because while their units are fine, they will get trounced by any of the Gon Jem guys.

It’s still their turn but only Ganan and Jin’s mooks start coming in – still out of range.

But that actually helps speed things up because the plot kicks in precisely at the player turn following the Giganos’ arrival! :v:

Player Phase!

: They did not escape… rather, they’ll return and soon! And until then, you’ll have to contend with me!
: Works for me! Put up yer dukes!

While I could have Rom tangle with Gon Jem, it’s wiser to bring him back to cover Quattro’s team. This is also good to draw in the midbosses.
Speaking of Quattro:

Full Armor Hyaku Shiki Kai (Quattro Bajeena)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L4
  • Sword Cut L5
  • Shield Defense L5
  • E-Save
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (10)
  • Mercy (5)
  • Fury (30)
  • Valor (40)
Mech Features:
  • Anti-Beam Coating – Beam damage reduced by 700
Quattro’s Voice Actor: Shuichi Ikeda (other known works: Durandal in SEED Destiny, Marluxia in Kingdom Hearts, Seijuro Hiko in Rurouni Kenshin and many more)

Quattro, as you’d expect, is a great pilot. He and Amuro go back-and-forth between stat advantages but they’re pretty much tied – it’s only in the Melee stat that Quattro has a decent advantage (though Amuro’s eventually a lot dodgier due to his stronger Newtype skill).
You can absolutely field Quattro and that’s especially true here because he has an actually GOOD default unit. The FA Hyaku Shiki blows its original frame out of the water, being superior in all accounts – even mobility and that usually goes down in FA units.

The only problem, however, is its average attack power. First off, its best attack is the MAPW which isn’t too useful against bosses and, worse, it’s got no combined attacks. This puts it behind the Z, ZZ and even the Qubeleys in raw damage potential… but, in truth, the same also applies to the Nu (which is still stronger than the FA Hyaku Shiki).
Summarizing: this is a great mook-hunting MS which’ll lag a bit behind against bosses. Not a problem here since they’ll all die easily but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re playing MXP.

Let’s get to work. With the Dragoons’ EWACs, Quattro’s in a very safe position.

Almost but not quite.

Meanwhile, Rom moves on over and takes aim.

ROM STOLL, BANZAAAAAAAI!

Enemy Phase!

The generics will, of course, jump at the chance to steal our kills.

They can also outright oneshot Giganos Metal Armors if they get a lucky crit, so that’s three Dauzehns for them. Quattro manages to take one.

The Dollas play ball and go after Rom, though. I’ll try to refrain from making any “holla, holla” jokes.
Once Rom reaches 130 morale…

: Oh, heaven and earth… fire and water… Grant me power!
: PIIIIILE FOOOOOOORMATION!!

: VIIIIIKUNGFU!
: Did he…?!
: No idea, but that was so cool!
: Hmm… Maybe I should have thought of a flashier way to introduce the Dragoons…? (This line only appears if Plato is back at the command center, after the following event.)

You hosed up now, son.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzrIFXVcyk4
Two of my favorite MX things, in one video: Rom and that loud-as-hell Giganos mook.

Player Phase!

: Professor Plato! Our Dragonars are in here, right?! We need them ready to launch like yesterday!
: Patience. We’re raising the hangar right now.
: This is the last time, Kaine! Once this battle’s over—
: Shut it – I’ve already made my choice here!
: Even if I left the army, there’s no way I could live in peace with groups like the Giganos, Tekkoryu and Gulfer around! So I’d rather go and get rid of them myself!
: And what about all the risks? This’ll only make it more likely for you to get killed!
: That’s all up to fate. No one knows what tomorrow’ll bring…
: Besides… it really wouldn’t feel right to bail on this when even kids younger than us are working so hard.
: And the reward?! That’s two million dollars! Two million!
: To hell with that, is what I say!
: Sorry, Tap. You’re gonna have to turn businessman by your lonesome.
: Argh, you’re both idiots! How the hell can you throw away two million bucks?!
: Because we got something way more valuable than that.
: Oi… you’re gonna make a speech about friendship, camaraderie and all that, aren’t you?
: Ah? You know what I’m getting at, then?

*Ka-chunk!*

: There. The set-up is finished.
: Wh-what the! The D-1’s different!
: My D-2, too…!
: And the D-3… actually, it’s the same?
: What’s with all this, professor…?!
: When they made it here, the Dragonars fulfilled their duty as prototypes; afterwards, the idea was that they’d become fixtures of the Nahel Argama team. With that in mind, we decided that they needed an increase in firepower.
: Thus, we gave them upgrades.
: Then these are…!
: The Dragonars, reborn – the D-1 and D-2 Customs. In my eyes, these are their proper forms… and they are yours.
: Wooow! Creeps like that guy, Gon Jem, are gonna be no problem with this baby!
: Um… and what about my D-3?
: Though it looks the same on the outside, its internal armor and systems have all been enhanced.
: I guess that makes sense. This IS a mech that fights with what’s inside.
: Alright! Time for the reborn Dragonar Team to lift off!
: Hold on now. If you head out with the custom models, won’t it give the idea that you’ve given up on leaving the army? Are you alright with that?
: You can ask me two hundred times and I’ll always pass on it!
: We wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t made up our minds on that.
: Hrm.. but…
: … Tap.
: F-Fine, fine! I’m coming with you!
: Are you capable of this? I know it’s all rather sudden but…
: Heheh… Ain’t the first time this has happened, right?
: Hah, true. Then, please, get aboard ASAP.
: What the hell are Kaine and the others doing in there?!
: You’ll know soon enough. Very soon…
: “Very soon”?
: Yes. I have faith in them… That Kaine, Tap and Light will, of their own free will, help pave the way for our future!
: “The way for our future”…?
: … Are we clear? The remodeled Dragonars have all had their output and mobility increased, so be very careful not to lose control.
: Roger that!
: Very well, then. Open the hatch! Let the true dragoons take flight!

: Uh?! The hell?!
: Here we go, Dragonar!!

*All three Dragonars charge forward.*

: W-Whoa! This girl’s got a whole lot more power, alright!
: Hah, they’re not custom models for nothing!
: A-Are those… the Dragonars?!
: These are still the Dragonars, yeah, but we are the Dragonar commando unit reborn!
: They managed to get them up and running, huh…?
: N-New Dragonars…?! When did they make those?!
: Prof. Plato had devised the upgrade plans while he was developing the Dragoons. So all that was left was wait for the main ingredients to arrive.
: … Those morons. There’s no going back now that they’ve gotten on those things…!
: L-Lieutenant?
: But… that’s exactly what I’d expect of them. 2nd Lt. Patterson, coordinate with Airman Newman and contact the Nahel Argama.
: I’d rather not leave all this up to those three any more than we already have. Too risky.
: Y-Yes, sir!
: Lt…
: We went through hell to get these Dragonars all the way here… so we’ll do everything in our power to keep them flying!
: Yes, sir!
: Pfeheheh… so they changed a bit. That don’t mean anything!
: Come on, people! Rip them kids apart!
: Yeah, keep talking! We’re gonna be pulling the plug on your party right the hell now!
: Go forth; show me the strength of the new dragons!
: Right on! Let’s do this thing, Tap, Light!
: Aye, aye!

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Oh, yeah. Here’s our first upgrade of the game and it’s pretty sweet: the Custom Dragonars, as Plato said, take fine mechs and make them even better.
On top of an overall stat boost all Dragonars are now equipped with Photonic Bazookas (among other minor weapons) which are now their strongest solo weapons. They’re powerful but take a non-insignificant amount of EN to use so don’t go too crazy.
The addition of this new weapon gives Kaine and Light a big boost because it fixes their biggest issues: range and damage, respectively. And, of course, the bazookas also give them all a new combined attack.

But we’ll get there when we get there. First off, there’s this Dolla that had the sense to avoid Rom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=049G-CdvtUc
Behold, the mother of all piledrivers.

We’ll go after Min’s crew to draw in the more distant Gon Jem guys. Light weakens a Dein and off goes Kaine to show off his new laser swords.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mod9l6R-S4
Nice.

Always with the shields…

Enemy Phase!

Oh, you poor idiot.

It takes a named character to face a named character.

But mooks can still kill-steal…

Oh? Gon Jem’s coming after Light.

: This here’s the D-3? Take it out and the other Dragonars are gonna be pretty much blind!
: Huh… You’re sharper than I’d expect someone with that face to be!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHwU6m8BvdM
Each Dragonar has a different colored bazooka, too: Light’s gold, Kaine’s red and Tap’s blue.
Light also gets harassed by some other mooks but just slaps them away.

The Dragoons are actually holding Jin and Ganan at bay.

Ah… I didn’t remember Min having a MAPW!

: Tough luck, fellas… Your mechs might’ve just gotten modded but my chainsaw really wants to tear them to ribbons, see!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIytOlUCnCI
And all that serves is deprive me of more money. Were I not keeping the other path, I’d be very annoyed now.

Player Phase!

: That mech… Albero?!
: …
: Tch, if you're here, then they—!

: All troops, deploy!

: Kaine! You alright?!
: Yup! Both my Dragonar and I are A-OK!
: And… it’s changed form since we last saw it?
: Well, we're about at the midseason point, so an upgrade is a-given.
: But… the D-3 looks the same…
: Oh, don’t be like that. Upgrades aren’t just in looks, alright?
: Never mind that – we need you guys to back us up! We’re still getting used to these!
: Hmm, what’s this? Someone’s gotten really cheery while we were away.
: (Heh, I knew it… they aren’t the types to just run away from this.)
: ... We played our part as decoys to the letter, I think.
: Yes. Now we can focus on our original mission.
: Hugo…!
: I got it…! They’re not getting away this time!
: And the target you spoke of… it’s that one?

*Looks at Rom.*

: Yes. I’d like to capture it if possible.
: “Capture” it? What for?
: …
: Isn’t a perfect TE Engine the power source the Medius actually needs?
: (From the intel I’ve seen, that unit seems to synchronized with and drawing upon energy from nature itself…)
: (If we can claim that functionality, my AI1 can grow even more…)
: So? I’m waiting for an answer, Elde Mitte.
: Those are orders from Prof. Zapato; he wants us to capture that unit’s power source. And it’s one way with which to surpass that monstrosity.
: What did you say…?!
: Captain!

*Hugo moves after Albero.

: Here you are, Hugo. Can you actually attack me, though?
: “Don’t hesitate when fighting an enemy.” You taught me that.
: Yes… that’s good.
: But I want some answers. For what reason did you come back to the battlefield?!
: You want to know, eh, Hugo?
: I do. Back then, I thought you’d quit the army since you felt responsible for losing all your subordinates but me…!
: …
: Didn’t you leave the battlefield behind to mourn your son?!
: …
: (His son…?!)
: Despite all that, here you are again… Why?!
: Heh… It’s a pretty boring reason, really.
: What?!
: What’s the most natural emotion for someone who had something precious taken away? I want revenge… against that demon.
: !
: (Natural emotion… revenge…)
: You know that that thing’s been brought back to life, don’t you? The monster that wiped out the Cry Wolves has shown its ugly face again.
: (So “that demon” is the Devil Gundam…?!)
: Then this is all to destroy it…?
: Wrong. It’s to surpass it.
: Wh…What?! What do you mean by that, Captain?!
: … That’s enough talk. The lot of you’ll serve as fodder to the Medius.
: Urk!
: Garmraid data collection initiated.
: I’m going all the way this time.
: If it’ll help his and AI1’s development, then I see no problem.
: That’s the plan, obviously. And don’t let AI1 show any rejection.
: Of course.
: (AI1… there’s nothing to be afraid of. The more pain you endure, the stronger you’ll grow… so do not reject it. Rather, accept the pain.)
: (Even if that results in the machine’s destruction… I’ll make sure you escape safely.)
: We’re going!

Mission Objective: All enemies destroyed
Mission Failure: Rom or the Nahel Argama destroyed.

No problems here, though this’ll be easier if you left a couple units around for your later arrivals to build morale. Gon Jem will always go after Kaine, while Albero seems to prioritize Hugo, so just make sure they’re prepared for that kind of attention.
Deal with Min and Goru first and when Jin and Ganan arrive, take them out. If you’ve the time, get rid of Albero – the Medius is starting to fall behind our power curve.

Quickly now, let’s take a look at Jem and the Holograms:

Geizam (Gon Jem)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Attack L3
Gon Jem’s Voice Actor: Osamu Kato (other known works: Gorgon and Nuke in Great Mazinger, Robert Gomez in V Gundam and several other secondary characters)

Big, bad, boss man – you know the drill. Gon Jem’s meant to get in your face and tear it off with that sword of his; unlike the common real robot bosses, however, he’s all about being tanky. His stats are, predictably, good all around so always keep your squishier guys with at least Focus around him; especially Kaine. And do your best to keep the area around him clear of enemies because you don’t need him getting those support attacks in.
His main weakness is that his range ain’t too hot: the best he’s got is 1-4. This group is more melee-oriented but we’ve got people that can still exploit that.

Stark Dein (Min)
Pilot Skills:
  • Shield Defense L4
  • Support Attack L2
  • Support Defense L1
Min’s Voice Actress: Saeko Shimazu (other known works: Yuri in Dirty Pair, Four in Z Gundam, Glycine in Sakura Taisen and many more)

Wasn’t there some poo poo storm between this VA and Yukana when she took over Four’s role in “A New Translation”?

Average stats for the pilot of a middling bot – I’d mark her as the weakest of the Gon Jem crew. Her mech’s got decent enough attack and accuracy but her three shield charges are the only thing stopping her Stark Dein from melting like cheese in the sun.
Once they’re gone, so is she.

Stark Gebai (Goru)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Shield Defense L1
  • Support Attack L2
Goru’s Voice Actor: the late Daisuke Gouri (other known works: Heihachi in Tekken, Hercule/Mr. Satan in DBZ, Dozle and Bask in Gundams and a lot more.)

This guy… I take him as the second strongest of the Gon Jem guys, despite how he seems to be the punchline character. Unlike his peers, Goru’s followed Gon Jem’s philosophy in that being dodge-focused when going against guys with Strike is stupid.
He can tank a hit rather well with his good-ish defense stat plus the Stark Gebai’s above average bulkiness and then he triggers that Prevail L3 to dish out some respectable damage. Don’t underestimate him or you may be surprised.

Stark Dauzehn (Jin)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Attack L2
Mech Features:
  • Double Image
  • EWAC (Strong)
  • Jammer
Jin’s Voice Actor: Bin Shimada

Third most dangerous guy, mostly because he’s rather accurate and will be boosted by Prevail (his damage output is on the low side but he’s got range). Dauzehns are lacking in defenses, though, so once you get past his myriad electronic warfare bits, he’ll go down easy. Just come packing Strike.

Stark Dolla (Ganan)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
Ganan’s Voice Actor: Ryuzaburo Otomo (other known works: Daimon in Gaiking LoDM, Euzeth in SRW Alpha, Fezarl in Gundam AGE, Magneto in X-men animated series and many more)

Further down the ladder, this guy. His Dolla has decent-ish stopping power but no shields, meaning his Prevail is all he’s got. 17k HP and 1100 armor are too little to be compensated by that.
Plus, while his range is good, his only post-movement attack is 1-3, meaning he’s easy to bait in… and his best attack also has a three-tile-long blind spot. Not good.

So, let’s get rid of Min to take away the slight threat of her bombs debuffing someone. Following a TFO attack, Bright will remove her last two shield charges.

There it goes.

And with Shinji and Ryouma on the job, there she goes.

That’s all her machine can take, so it’s time to eject.

Next on my kill list is Goru and Akira might as well take some morale from nearby mooks.

He learns Spirit.

: Dragonars! I’m gunna wreck you and the Colonel’ll be so impressed wit me!

That’s all his shields.

See, when I warned you against Goru, I was speaking from experience. 3k damage on one of my bulkiest Supers is nothing to sneeze at from a lower-tier midboss but I still didn’t get the message at the point.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQxhqioCeUQ
Which is what helped Goru claim the title of first unit in the LP to break an A.T. Field. Now I need to have some units heal Asuka pronto because I REALLY don’t wanna fork over an EVA’s repair cost.

Ayato takes the last Gebai and Hugo finishes the Dein crew.

I’m officially done with you, guy.

If I was in range, I would totally have busted out a Valored God Hand Smash.

Die, please.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI4oLbZQ6CUvvvv
One good thing is how much he freaks out when shot down.

Having clearly stolen Karl and Dan’s script, he cries out to his boss as he ejects.

Enemy Phase!

The Dragoons try taking on Albero. It goes about as well as you’d expect, though one barely hangs on.

Good to see you again, Mr. Jem.

: Think ya can take me on, sonny? That’s gonna be the last mistake of yer life!
: This baby’s a whole lot different from that Dragoon! Here, lemme show you!

Just something to pass time.

Albero goes after Hugo but I expected that and left him protected.

: What did you mean by surpassing that thing, Captain?! Answer me!
: I’ve no reason to tell you anything!
: Even if you pulled it off, your son-… Foglia won’t come back!
: I’m well aware of that! And now I’m going to send you over to where he and my other subordinates are waiting!

Whoa… I just now realized that the two Dragoon mooks’ attacks took out half of his HP already. I don’t know if this says good things about Plato’s creation or bad things about Mitall’s.

Player Phase!

Let’s wrap things up with Albero since he’s so close.

: Weren’t you Hugo’s old boss? Didn’t think you’d be buddying up with the Giganos!
: We’re not choosy with our methods. It’s all about the mission…!
: And that’s why you don’t give a crap even when it means fighting Hugo?!

: Initiating sample data collection.
: One without a righteous heart could never fathom the power I wield!

: This man… Char Aznable, Zeon’s Red Comet…!
: (Hm…? What is this sinister feeling I’m getting from this man and his machine…?!)
: Data from this one’ll also be very valuable to the Medius!
: I may not know what you’re up to, but I do not care for how you see others as a means to meet your goals…!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE2hMddfGag

Amazingly, Alert is Quattro’s second-to-last spirit. Maybe it’s a jab at his average Newtype powers?

: Heheheh… Good. Very good.
: Captain?!
: Do you see how it’s going to be, Hugo? I’ll keep on coming after you group, again and again… And, every time, we’ll engrave newer scars into each other’s bodies.
: What?!
: …Lasmunanium, engaged.

: Always with that, huh? But you’re not running off today!
: Repairs to the first layer of armor, complete. However, there is still extensive damage in the frame.
: Further combat is impossible… I recommend you allow AI1 to handle escape procedures.
: Fine, do it!
: Roger. Calculating random pattern. Releasing dummies; quasi-explosion, execute.

: ?!
: Enemy reinforcements?!
: No, they’re—!
: H-How did those machines come out the Medius?!

: !!
: They self-destructed?!
: What happened there, Aqua?!
: That… that explosion was…!
: What is it?!
: (It was… Ms. Mitte’s…?!)
: Hey! Aqua!
: Ah…! S-Sorry…!
: What happened to the Medius Locus?!
: I-It escaped… The drones really did explode but the Medius’ was a quasi-explosion…
: “Quasi-explosion”?!
: A type of optical illusion… so good that even sensors mistake it for an actual explosion.
: And how do you know that?
: Because it has a very unique signature… which I know of…
: …
: (Is Ms. Mitte… also aboard the Medius…? No, that’s not possible – her theory was…)

Now it’s just a matter of waiting a little bit for Jin and Ganan to walk over. Following that, we’ll deal with Gon Jem (he’ll retreat under 30% HP)

: A whole lot of folks in the Giganos have a major beef with you, Dragonars.
: Which means taking y’all down has gotta be worth a pretty penny!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwysryrzuPY

He’ll get us for this! :argh:

Waaaaaaaaah!

I didn’t have a Dragonar left to attack Jin but he had words for them:

: If these are custom models, then they’re the same as our Metal Armors.
: So I’ll just have to show you idiots how big the skill gap between us is!

: I’m two million percent pissed off now! Take a look!
: What the crap are ya ranting about?!

: I really don’t like that godly feel yer mech’s got!
: He’s so strong…! This Metal Armor’s been tuned to eleven!

: Hrm. He fights purely on instinct… Like a wild beast!
: Right-o! The Gon Jem squad ain’t nothing like those moon-grown wimps!
: Bring it on, then! Just hearing your voice makes me want to fight! (Oh, Gorgon…)

: Heh… And here I was, thinking the Giganos were all like the Blue Hawk and his boy band. But, nope, they also have these bandit types!
: Thanks for the compliment! As payback, yer gonna get a taste of my Seiryuu Blade!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QTNI-S0xlo
I never actually showed this attack before.

: Look at you, with them gaudy gold colors! Pah!
: So this is Gon Jem, the Disgrace of Giganos…!
: Heehahaha! I reckon I’ll chop off that armor and build a house out of it or something!

: Yow! An angel’s decided to come down to the battlefield? Ain’t that something!
: “Angel”… The RahXephon…?
: But too bad for ya, I’m not a religious fella! No mercy, even for angels!

: This wild aura around this man… he’s dangerous!
: Come on, metal head! Once you’re outta that clam, I’ll be turning ya into chowder!

: I’ve no idea who ya are but yer soon gonna be just some rust on my sword!
: Swordsmanship guided by malice will avail you not against the brilliance of the Wolf Blade!

VIKUNGFU BOMBER!

: Urk, his sword moves likes it’s got a mind of its own… Or, maybe, his style is that unhinged…! Either way, I can’t get a read on him!
: This here’s the famous Getter? Well, I’m gonna chop all these three mechs down together!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7vvnmwXIiM
And here’s the D-Team’s new combined attack.

Kaine learns Valor and Sword Cut L3

Gon Jem sniffs that today was just a test. The Dragonars are in luck – they get to keep their lives until their next encounter.
All foes are dealt with and Duke is quick to get in touch with Rom, seeking to confirm his identity and why a Cronosian like him would have come to Earth. Rom only says that it was all the guidance of the Wolf Blade and runs off, to see us again another day. ( :qq: )
Kaine figures we should just be happy that all enemies are taken care of, though Shinji figures this now means the Dragonar team will be leaving. About that…

Light confirms to Bright that they’re sure about staying with the army, though Tap is still feeling for the evaporating cash reward. Kaine says that they needn’t tag along if him if they don’t actually want to, though.
“Come now, Kaine. We all know that you’d be dead real quick without us around,” Light quips. “Right, right. Only reason you’ve survived all this way is because of us. I couldn’t get a good night’s sleep knowing that you were out there, alone,” Tap adds. Kaine only huffs that they’re just as dependent of him as he is of them. That’s what being a team’s about, which is why they’ll all stay – and with the Dragonars saved from destruction, that’s a happy ending for everyone.

Professor Plato is glad to see the men rose to his expectations and Kaine laughs at how everything seemingly went according to the old guy’s plan. No, Plato argues that it's Kaine and the others who actually made the decision - that said, Linda is quite delighted.
Douglas is glad, too, more so because he turned out wrong about them – he’s now expecting great things from Kaine and the others. He’ll remain here in Chongqing, entrusting the D-Team to the Nahel Argama. Light doesn’t know whether to be happy or sad about this.

Dianne already has the paperwork handy and, with it signed, all the bureaucracy is taken care of. They’re now officially assigned to the Nahel Argama and, better yet, it comes with a promotion to the rank of Warrant Officers.
Bright says he vouched for them, and that he expects even greater things from them from now on. As Kaine confirms, Tap is very happy with the promotion since it also means they get officer salaries – that’s SIX ranks they just plowed through (all three classes of airmen, Cpl, Sgt and MSgt). Which means… they now outrank Ben!
The guy groans a confirmation, prompting Kaine to go I CAN’T HEAR YOU. “Speak clearly when addressing your superior officers!” Tap adds. As Ben begs their forgiveness, Kaine really likes the dynamic shift (Ben can only seethe).

Plato is glad to see that they understand the importance of ranks, so he’d expect them to act just as respectful with Linda and Rose as they still outrank them. So much for Kaine and Tap’s mirth.
Still, Plato tells them not to forget who they themselves are: the Dragonars have a rough edge that the "model student" Dragoons lack – meaning the three of them, equally atypical, are the best equipped to leverage those capabilities.
Kaine promises they’ll bring home the goods with their new bots and, with that, they take off.

When Dianne asks, Plato won’t say whether this outcome is for the best or not – he hasn’t the right to opine when it was his actions that dragged them into this mess in the first place.
Bright knows how that is, remembering all the youngsters he’s seen follow this path; but all of them, amid the pain and hardship, ended up finding their own reasons to fight. He’s sure that Kaine and the others also have something like that pushing them onwards – Ben agrees with him.
Plato, meanwhile, rededicates himself to doing everything he can to help bring this war to a speedy conclusion. First off, he ought to finish the Dragonars’ official transfer to our ship; Douglas will help, asking Bright to take care of those three and wishing godspeed.

Linda and Rose will transfer to the Argama but Dianne, much to Ben’s disappointment, will remain in Chongqing. Still, she wishes him well and looks forward to their reunion. Playing wingman, Plato requests that Ben carry the two girls’ luggage onto the ship – Dianne can help.
Ben is all over it, confident in his strength, and Plato quietly laughs at what a transparent man he is.

: … The Medius has definitely powered up since the last time we saw it.
: …
: Now, I imagine the Lasmunanium’s responsible for that but I can’t see Albero Est being the one managing it.
: You figure there’s someone else aboard the mech?
: I’m not sure… At least, from what I saw of the Medius’ specs, it was designed as a single seater.
: … Why were you so familiar with how the Medius escaped?
: Someone told me about it during my time at the military academy.
: And that someone’s now helping pilot the Medius, then?
: Can’t be. That’s not the kind of thing she’d do.
: …
: (Still, I know for a fact that there’s some link between her and Prof. Zapato…)
: (But if she was involved with the Medius’ development, then the machine would’ve been made as a combat AI-equipped drone. That was what she was after…)
: …
: Hey, Hugo, can you tell me just one thing?
: …
: The “revenge” Albero was talking about… is it…
: … Yes, it is. The squadron I belonged to, the Cry Wolves, was annihilated in a battle with the Devil Gundam.
: …
: The only survivors were the Albero and myself… He took the blame for what happened and quit the army to mourn my deceased teammates, including his son Foglia.
: But now he’s back in the battlefield, all in order to take revenge on the Devil Gundam…
: But I don’t think that’s the end of it.
: Huh?
: The Devil Gundam’s revival was confirmed a long while after the Medius had been stolen. Meaning there’s a very good chance that Albero found out about it only after he’d already started piloting the machine.
: Prof. Mitall did know about the Cry Wolves, so maybe he was simply scouted by him? He could have been looking for a chance to get revenge all that time.
: If that was the case, then, like me, there’d have been no need for him to quit the army.
: …
: (He must have something else in mind besides taking revenge on the Devil Gundam…)
: (What is it, Captain—… rather, Albero Est?)

: … Somehow, I need you’d be staying in the military.
: How come?
: I can’t quite put it into words but… I just felt like you’ve been looking for something throughout all this fighting. That’s how.
: Hmhmm… There’s something else I wanted to ask: why did you decide to help the army?
: Back when we were all together, you hated fighting so much…
: I hated fighting because I hated my father…
: Huh…? You hated that guy…?
: Hm. It was the Metal Armors he developed that sparked the war… and his defection to the Federation only escalated things…
: But that was…
: But I now understand that that was the answer he found at the end of a very agonizing road…
: So I decided that I also could not let my ideals end up as nothing more than that. I figured I had to see what lied at the other side – in battle – and, by doing so, find something myself.
: Yeah, that’s it, Linda! Nothing’s gonna change if you only stay inside your head!
: But… that doesn’t mean I’ve forgiven my father yet. It’s his fault that our family’s been torn apart…
: … Linda… I met with the Giganos’ Blue Hawk in Kyoto.
: !
: Um… Is he—
: I’m sorry, Kaine. But don’t ask me anything right now… I’ll tell you everything, eventually. So please be patient…
: Yeah, alright…
: They’ve decided to have Rose and I accompany your team as operators.
: So we’ll always be together from here on out, right?
: Yes…
: Linda…

*Several folks run over.*

: Ah, Kaine! So this is where you were!
: Ggcht…! Light, Tap! And the others, too!
: Oho… are we interrupting something?
: If you realize that then get going right now, dumbass!

Kouji tells him to be nice because we all came here to re-welcome them into the fold. Kaine figures they’re making a mountain out of a molehill but Misato says it’s no problem at all – this is for good luck.
She’s in a pretty good mood and Asuka tells why: there was a poll about the D-Team and she won. Still, Shinji’s also pretty happy that they decided to stay. Asuka’s surprised to hear say stuff like that but they DID go through all those things together.
Even Asuka has to concede the point: “things would be too slow without them around. At least like this, I’ll still have some entertainment.”
Shinji, Daisuke and Tetsuya all give them a proper welcome, saying they’ll all be expecting them to work just as hard as they have thus far. Kaine is feeling the love and Linda can see that this is where he belongs.
Rose lets us know that the moon team will be arriving real soon with the Nadesico – from what we’ve heard, things were tough up there but they also came back with some new buddies. Time to consolidate the celebration of the D-Team’s stay with a welcome party for these new arrivals, Kaine figures.

From here on out we’ll be going over the events on the other side, so we can skip that. When I go wrap up the moon route, I’ll see what new info we get and point it out then.

You've got a few instances of "Gorud" where it should say "gold" regarding Quattro's ride and the D3's bazooka.

I've always liked the Gon Jem squad as far as miniboss teams go, they're some of the toughest enemies in Advance/Advance Portable, and they tend to show up during route splits to make things even harder.

Maybe it's because I'm going through money troubles right now, but that whole sequence with Tetsuya calling Tap a coward for wanting the pension was really intolerable. I know he's supposed to be the rear end in a top hat of the group but Jesus.

Really like that Char is all but self-aware there: "Good thing I am not the one whose character development turned into insane rear end in a top hat here" is a valid interpretation of his lines.

Nah, I felt that it was kinda a dick move too. I was thinking you're supposed to dislike Tetsuya during that part, but no one really called him on it? :psyduck:

Of course nobody called him on it. This is mecha anime. If you aren't willing to throw away your entire life and dedicate yourself 1000000% to warfare until you either die or develop crippling PTSD, then you are a coward, a weakling, and less than a man. In fact, you're nothing at all. Tetsuya may be more blunt about it than most, but you see that poo poo all the time.

Tetsuya alongside Jun were adopted and then raised as soldiers by Kouji's father to fight the Mycene... literally he is a weapon.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

The cash reward isn't even a factor here. Tetsuya's a (hotheaded, no-nonsense) soldier through and through and he's pissed because they're about to shirk their duty as some of the few people around who're capable of defending others against these huge threats.

In his mind, it is that clear cut.

Sure but the game implicitly takes his side by not really having him get called out on it. At best there's a milquetoast reaction of "Well I guess we can't force them to fight" and even the Dragonar plot in the mission sort of has that same implicit message of "Taking the money is the obviously wrong decision" that doesn't really fly with me.

On top of that, it's kind of a nonsense setup meant to create a moral dilemma, but it's so obviously artificial that it becomes absurd. It's a ludicrous amount of money for anyone to even think of giving up on, much less for Kaine's flimsy reasons (They're gonna dismantle my obsolete mech? THIS WILL NOT STAND!!!)

And on top of that, it feels even dumber for this whole argument between Tetsuya and the Dragonar pilots goes on with absolutely nobody even mentioning Asuka, Rei, Shinji, Ayato, Hokuto, or Ginga. Like, if you really wanted to lay a guilt trip on them, why not bring up how they're leaving these kids who've been drafted (mostly) against their will with less backup?

I confess I was expecting someone to bring up those kids.

As for Kaine, his "reason" is flimsy because he had already made his choice even before he made it to Chongqing. He only needed something - anything - to make him acknowledge that he wanted to stay.

The threat of losing his partner-bot is just a small push for that.

Tap's dilemma loses a lot of its punch when your team already has a whole bunch of super robots and the MP Dragoons are one of the strongest allied grunt units in any SRW game. It sucks that the game implicitly sides with Tetsuya on this, but SRW runs on super robot logic and doesn't want you to think about it.

It is especially disappointing because MX has some of the best crossover moments in the series and they could have tried to add something else to this scenario to spice it up instead of just going "they will not win this battle without the D2 Custom, totes" until Tap got back in the robot.

Everything else rules though. I particularly like how Rom is in Earth and space at the same time.

Kaine was outright showing unease with the prospect of their duty ending at mission 17, though he waved it off when Tap asked. That's pretty much the most blatant clue they give us.

As for Tetsuya, SRW tends to minimize how hostile he actually is in the series proper. Z, for instance, had him come in with a smoother personality since he chalked Musashi's death to his attitude.

Alpha Gaiden is where you go if you want to see series Tetsuya Tsurugi in overdrive.

Hard to make a situation threatening when you've Quattro and Rom holding the line. :v:

But they did try, if only in passing: it's kinda implied that the three of them need to get in the loving robots or the Gon Jem squad will overwhelm the defenders (yeah, right).

Until Rose and Light called the Argama back, they were the only ones available to defend against a superior enemy force.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."

To be fair, Char probably didn't see it as betrayal given that killing the Zabi family was always a goal of his, he just, uh, "forgot" to tell them that.

Also one of my favorite things about older SRW games is how often they dove into the various art books and minor side stories/novels (like F90 or Beltochika's Children) to grab mobile suits that never made it into the main series. I don't know what happened, maybe it was a licensing thing, but they stopped doing it around the time UC gave way to SEED. It's too bad the F91 Twin VSBR Type never got included as a hidden upgrade akin to the Nu Gundam HWS or Full Armor ZZ. Then again, despite being one of the original SRW Gundams, F91 doesn't see remotely as much play as Original/CCA, Zeta, and ZZ. Hell, I think 0083 and frickin' 0080 have shown up more.

It's Z Gundam MSV, or Mobile Suit Variation. The MSV line is reserved for official (canon) designs which aren't officially featured in a particular show (but can appear as model kits, cameos in games, or as units in later shows). The FA actually made it into a Z Gundam sidestory manga, piloted by one Cliff Fleming, and it survived nearly a decade longer than its grandfather, the original Hyaku Shiki. The FA Hyaku Shiki Kai is actually a variant of the Hyaku Shiki Kai, which is a variant of the Hyaku Shiki. All Universal Century offshoots of the suit line would be based off the Kai, and it's not sure how many HSK's were produced.

Keep in mind, the Hyaku Shiki was originally developed as part of a contest within the design studio to come up with what would become the Zeta Gundam. (Another design from the contest that made it into the show was the Psyco Gundam.) It's not unreasonable that its possible upgrade paths were developed by the animation team.
