Just so you guys don't get left with too good of an impression about end of life care over here, the other day we had an 85 year old chap present to the ED following a VF arrest at home. He had no bystander CPR so a presumed downtime of nearly 5 minutes, but paramedics had shocked him back into an unstable sinus Brady of about 30 bpm. He was making poor respiratory effort and his lactate was 10 on ABG.

We intubated and fired up the transcutaeous pacer (which looks uncomfortable as gently caress by the way) which had trouble capturing but brought his rate up to 50 ish. Dude looked pretty bad. While we were working him an argument was going on between the medical registrar and the ITU registrar, since ITU had come down, taken one look at the guys blood gas and wanted to stop. He was totally convinced the guy was hosed and under no circumstances did he want to take him upstairs. And no, he didn't feel the need for any more information beyond 'unknown 85 year old male' to make that decision. The med reg on the other hand was insisting we wait for family to arrive (ETA 10 mins) for some past medical history and to involve them in the decision.

Well med reg won, but ITU reg bitched constantly for the whole 10 minutes that we were keeping the patient alive. He was genuinely pissed off. Family duly arrived and they had a talk with them, explained the prognosis and a decision was quickly reached to withdraw support. We extubated, I personally turned off the pacer and we stood back and awaited the inevitable while the patients daughter sobbed and hugged him one last time.

Next week he is being discharged, fully neurologically intact. FFS.

And hey, something that is driving me crazy my current game is the three male colonists constantly flirting with the single female colonist, getting a mood drop, then doing it again an hour later to get another mood drop which stacks. So I figured ok, I'll have her stay up at night and go to sleep in the day so the three men, 2 of which is almost 3 times as old as her and the other being 4 times, would stop trying to make moves on the nudist lesbian 19 year old. Except they still try making moves on her when she is asleep! Apparently I got loving goons as my colonists, I'm having to make her room on the other side of the base, move the workshops I had her using over to there and seperating the colony between the three elder goons and the single young woman so the men stop going on food binges (I guess they really are goons) and poo poo because they keep getting rebuffed every 2 minutes.

E: Oh and the food binge mood break can eat a bag of dicks. I now build a wall to secure my precious survivor meals cause these assholes always grab those without fail when they binge.

Perhaps he has seen such a depth of suffering in this place that human life has lost all meaning to him. My dear friend Silent_Killah remains steadfast as always, but I fear that issues with our supply lines are preventing him from properly dispensing his duties; He so seldom has any spare munitions to distribute to the squad.

I have not seen our scout for several days, having last caught a glimpse of him inexplicably scaling a distant outcrop on the morning of the 22nd while we strove to hold our current objective against Fritz. I fear him lost.
