How do these challenges work exactly? Like, if it says assassinate 4 targets with an axe what defines a person as a target? Can it be anyone on the map? Or do I have to do contracts/escalations to have proper Targets?

They have to be actual assassination targets, which in many cases means you have to create a custom contract to make it possible. In Hokkaido, they have one new spin on it that I hadn't seen before, or at least hadn't bothered to check on: more targets than is actually possible to have in a single contract (8, the maximum being 5) so you have to split the completion up between two different contracts.

Now that I have this dating robot I can take it easy.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get Yuki to go back to the steam room after she does her initial stop there? I got the challenge to kill her with it, but it was by bee-lining right there as soon as the mission started. If that's the only way to do it, that'd be interesting considering that the bandages guy will also go off on his own fairly early on. None of the other maps have had hard time limits on opportunities like that.

edit: Huh I finally went back and read some other spoiler posts and I guess it's already been discussed. Though I've never seen her go back there after the first visit, maybe my session was just weird.

Speaking of the ninja, I like the complication of having to use knocked out people as keys to get around, if you, like me, have no idea where the scrambler is. 47 takes his cosplay very seriously, no fancy modern gadgets for this Silent Ninja.

I had wondered if this works, but just used the scrambler and the master key for my ninja run.

One thing I love that I don't think anyone has mentioned is how intuitive the door system is. The door access pads show exactly which costumes are allowed through, and the symbols on the costumes get more complex to reflect higher level access. Genius!

Yeppp it's pretty unreasonable. I had to restart that ET a few times because the area around the target became hostile.

However, actually completing the ET was pretty easy. I put an explosive duck on the couch and detonated it when the ex-dictator and his wife approached it. The ex-dictator sat down, and the wife picked it up.

That's pretty much been the pattern all along. The only ET I can think of that was kind of tricky to complete was The Twin, since you couldn't use anything imprecise and messy, and you had to be very sure you got the right guy. At the same time, the way it was set up, being precise would expose you an awful lot unless you spent a ton of time prepping half the town.

Hey, Hitman newcomer here.

Sorry if this question gets asked all the time but I was considering picking up the first season thing they've been working on once the physical release comes out in January, but apparently the digital version requires a constant online connection which just doesn't sit well with me. Any word on them stripping it out or removing it for the physical release?

Unlikely, in large part because so much of the content has an online component.

What variant of “doesn't sit well” are we talking about? Shaky or intermittent connection, cost, or privacy concerns?

Yeah if you're internet is in the process of making GBS threads itself it's a real pain in the dick but otherwise you don't notice it. It uses up minuscule amounts of bandwidth if that's a concern.

Always online seems to be a big sticking point though. Superbunnyhop recently reviewed Season 1 and said it was one of the best stealth games he ever played but if you're crazy enough to look at the comments, everyone says they will never buy it because it's always online. I wonder how many additional sales they'd get if IO told the Square-Enix suits to gently caress off with the always online mandate.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a vanishingly small number.

If I'm allowed to be presumptuous dick for a moment, I get the distinct feeling that they wouldn't buy it anyway if it had everything offline — they'd pirate it since it would be much easier to do so. I also think that's part of the reason why it's there, although the micro-updates and the leaderboards and all that give IOI/SE a decent enough justification.

Beyond that, if I can't be online, then I'm not going to play Hitman anyway — I'm going to be on my phone, making my ISP techs hate me for asking unreasonable questions about uptime. Maybe I'm just weird when I don't play it on my laptop on the subway or something…

I haven't had the connection fail since around the time of Marrakesh, but it was pretty irritating. I'm not bothered by the online stuff, but I'm sympathetic to the people who are, since I used to worry a lot more about things like that. What if season 2 bombs and Square cuts the servers, or just decides to cut them n-years from now for whatever reason? I just like knowing all my games are still going to work in the future, but care less about that now that I have no free time anyway. It would be nice to have campaign(already offline)/unlocks/escalations all be offline, with the online only needed for the leader board/ETs/contracts.

That said, I think it's pretty ridiculous that people are tanking the Steam score with reviews like "best Hitman ever! But online bad! (50 hours played, not recommended)".

Not a fan of always-online DRM, partially out of principle but also cause I've been burned by it badly in the past (thanks Ubisoft). I also used to travel quite a bit, and probably will again in the near future, and have lived places without good or even any wireless access, so that's a concern. I understand certain aspects of the game are tied to the Internet (contracts, elusive targets), and that I'd need to connect to download newly created content or upload my score or what have you, and that's all fine, but I dislike the requirement of a constant connection for what's essentially a singleplayer game, depriving you of unlockable content that's already part of the package, interupting your session if there's a problem with someone else's servers, etc. I prefer the peace of mindin knowing a game I bought will work as long as the hardware for it does, even if the company folds or the servers get taken down.

I appreciate that Hitman's model is far more beneign and less intrustive than most, but it's still something I'm hesitant to support.

SBH himself really didn't like the always online thing and felt that certain elements of the design, primarily the Elusive targets, mostly existed to penalize players who hadn't bought it as soon as possible. Its a real shame that there's so much dodgy stuff going on around the game when fundamentally its so drat good.

The always online is not helping the consumer at all, there isn't a real multiplayer component to the game. Its clunky DRM and ought to be called out as such.

I appreciate it in the sense that I've had conversations like this before, though not about this particular title, where defenders of the game were quick to justify how it "Wasn't as bad as how those other guys do it." The justification that SE would probably use is that since it's updated with elusive targets and other online content they feel that it's necessary to be online 24/7 to get the full experience or something. That and they probably log your profile on their servers so you can't disgrace the sanctity of online leaderboards. It's really loving stupid though considering that it's a 100% offline game apart from the plentiful amount of updates/content.

I still can't get over how the loving menu is streamed from their servers to you every time you boot the game up though, mind boggling.

Fair Enough.

Anyway, they seem to have basically confirmed season 2 at this point. I have good faith in IO, but I was a bit worried reading some of the stuff they're saying that they don't end up recycling the old maps. Well the thing is, this game also has Denuvo DRM as well which is pretty tough to crack and only a select handful of games with this DRM have been cracked and it usually takes months; so adding always online on top of that seems especially unnecessary. Plus what will happen if Square-Enix decide to shut off the servers because the game didn't reach their completely unrealistic expectations?

They don't really bother me because their transient nature is what makes them fun in the first place, and the game has plenty of content without them. I think this is really a statement on how 47 views people, and his fascination with Japan. He's a prodigy beyond compare, having mastered all the languages he comes into contact with to the point where he doesn't even process the differences consciously; he just hears them all in the same English accent, and responds in the proper dialect without a second thought. Except sometimes, he does notice the difference. That is the case with these attendants, where the Japanophile 47 rejects their Japanese, because they and their surroundings do not live up to his expecations of what Japan is. Thus he judges them as nothing more than a crude imitation of the ideal. KAI on the other hand, an artificial mirror of his own perfection*, manages to live up to his unreasonable expectations in a way no ordinary person could. In conclusion; 47 wants to marry KAI.

*Where 47 infiltrates, KAI guards, where 47 kills, KAI resuscitates
