Dunno man ... seen them twice and all they do is gently caress with the sound booth.

(I kid of course ... the shows are god damned amazing, but they really enjoy long outro noise/pisstakes. One of them was a 45 minute NXNE or CMW set and they probably spent half an hour just loving with the sound guy haha.)

i like this, reminds me of The Voices

In other news, saw Swervedriver again the other night and they were excellent... "new" drummer and ex- Supergrass bass player maybe responsible for tweaking some of the older material so it sounds even better than before?

Not quite so sold on new Nothing album though... ACD is a great track but the rest lacks the bite and hooks that the brilliant first album had...

Tom Scharpling had Sunshine & the Rain on The Best Show this week and they performed a bunch of new material (which is nice since previously they only released two songs), I highly recommend listening. A track from this came up on Weekly Discover for me and I've been listening to this album non stop for days. Are there other bands like this, with a similar melodic but loud and uplifting with dreamy vocals?

Sort of context, and I imagine most everyone that bothers with this thread has already seen it. Pitchfork dropped a 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of all time article. I'm a sucker for these listicles, and at least pitchfork might make the attempt to put in work and mine some of the less seen records of the genre. The top ten is super predictable, and you absolutely know what the number one record is without even bothering to look. I was happy with a solid amount of the selection. The inclusion of both early Curve LPs makes 90's me a happy lad, I really enjoy their Bardo Pond record, and the Mercury Rev selection is easily my favorite from them.

However, in the opening rules they state their inclusions are set after the release of Psychocandy and then don't bother to include any JAMC. Honey's Dead could have made the cut. Also, they got Pete Kember to do the preface and then skip out on any Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, or EAR records.

Still, it's an easy scroll. I dug into some Pale Saints yesterday and remembered how much I like their sound, and Ulrich Schnauss is always nice.

e: repetition sounds repetitious

mbv always tops these lists.

i'm sorta confused as to why a band like lovesliescrushing is on the list at all mostly because i dont like them. i guess eschewing melody is avant-garde or innovative or something.

pretty solid stuff otherwise. the only new band for me that i liked was autolux, which i really enjoy.

some weirdo picks i think are the m83 dead cities album over before the dawn heals us, the new mbv album over anything else like spiritualized or jesus and mary chain.

i was just listening to the b-side compilation, the power of negative thinking, and enjoyed how strange and unpolished some of their earlier songs were. i think darklands could've replaced some of the stuff in the top 10. no doubt psychocandy too

hatelull
Oct 29, 2004

Ha. I just realized I had the first two M83 records swapped in my head and that the one with "*" did not make the list. Power of Negative Thinking is such a great collection. It's a great stroll through their entire career, and I don't find myself getting bored with the later material (unlike say the similar in purpose Cure box set). I wish it had the extended "Sidewalking" from Sound of Speed though.

e: I guess they were avoiding ep's, because man I would have included the "You Made Me Realise" ep (or either of the Loveless eps) over the last MBV record. Color me a non-purist, but while I appreciate that record for existing it's not something I pull out on a regular basis or want to hear as much as an album like Isn't Anything.

loveiscrushing is a perfect distillation of where shoegaze was going at the time and while i dont really listen to them much they are good. some dumb picks there though. like really mbv (the album) and m83? but it's pitchfork. but for all of that it's a pretty good list considering the source imo

i don't know man, i don't think ive ever wanted to listen to an album that ranges between a monastic chant to a droning ava maria however i can understand why people might like it. i can also understand why people listen to sunn o))), which to me sounds like a broken refrigerator. perhaps it's beyond my time or understanding, but if you like it then it doesn't really matter what i think, huh?

some modern jams i just listened to again are pretty great. one from a japanese band called kinoku teikoku and another from imperial colony of japan, korea called vidulgi ooyoo

i guess i lean more towards poppy melodic than aimless discord (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Some inexcusable omissions, I thought: Have A Nice Life, Planning for Burial, The Angelic Process, Coaltar of the Deepers. Granted, none of them are formulaic shoegaze, whch is precisely what makes them awesome... Also, Slowdive >>> MBV... Pygmalion >Souvlaki...

The last Nothing album which wasn't exactly mind blowing and was released all of what? 4 months ago, makes the Top albums of all time? Really?:colbert:

JAMC for me is weird because despite being a big fan I don't associate them with Shoegaze at all, though if listened to in isolation no doubt their first few albums would qualify. Maybe because they predate the whole genre?

There are a million reasons to ruin things.
Can I do a little self-promo? My most recent album is not strictly shoegaze or dream pop but there are 3 or 4 tracks on there that were definitely heavily influenced by MBV and several other shoegaze/ambient-adjacent artists. Maybe some of the other tunes will be up your alley as well (they lean more toward kinda mathy indie rock with some prog influences i guess?): https://commonminer.bandcamp.com/album/harbor

"Surface to Air" and "We Fall Like Snow" would probably most be to the tastes of people reading this thread. Hope you like it.
