I'm really looking forward to closing on our new house because both the front and the back doors have mud rooms/enclosed porches which means it's less likely that someone is going to catch a whiff of something and piss all over the doorjamb.

have you tried a different litter? some cats are picky fuckers and only want to poop in a particular type. perhaps ask the shelter what they used? I have had trouble using precious cat ultra. the only quirk is that Winston digs a hole in the middle of the box, stands with his front feet in the hole while pooping, then seems confused about how hard it is to cover up the poop which is already on top of a huge pile of litter from digging the hole in the first place.
