Overall, I would probably say that Inbox is a better /mobile/ experience than I get with standad GMail, but it has a lot fewer features on the desktop side. I generally have to make a new filter every time one of the people who think they own my GMail address signs up for a new service, or gets someone new sending them contracts or resumes or bank statements, and Inbox doesn't cut the mustard for that.

Same, it's pretty funny how much personal info I've found out about this dumb jackass who thinks my email is his. I know where he lives, his hobbies, when he buys something and emails a receipt, when he got into university, bought a house, etc

Aye, when I frequented the Gmail help forums, it was the cause of one the most common questions there, though typically phrased in the form of "Why did Google give my address to another person?"

Most free services will demand that the user confirms that he owns the email address on the account. Most services the user pays for will assume that any address he gives them is one he owns, unless legally required.

The most misdirected email I got: About two years ago, I wound up with an email from some major Hong Kong restaurant that was having a two-night-only visit from a world-famous French chef, and required a phone call to confirm the dining reservation that had been made. I didn't keep the email, but If I recall correctly, the pricing was near $1000 per seat.

The restaurant sent an email cancelling the reservation about a week later.

Finally after years of looking I've found a nice alarm clock app to replace Gentle Alarm and Timely. AMdroid has everything anyone could want with Material Design. My only complaint is with the name but apart from that it's pretty much perfect in every way.

As for Inbox v. Gmail, Inbox just looks nicer on the web so that's what I use. I don't really like it much and there are things about it I strongly dislike but it's pretty.

I fought inbox for a long time and gave in. Love it. The snooze feature is awesome. I set stuff to re-appear when I arrive at home, for example (while traveling for work). I know 3rd party apps can snooze but if I recall they add tags and poo poo to the email. Inbox just does it natively.

It has Off Days :swoon::swoon::swoon:

I wish I could make the snooze button even bigger than the large size it offers. Timely's snooze button takes up half the screen. Other than that, this looks perfect.

If you want to try Inbox just use it. It's just a different view of your Gmail account really, with some hooks into other Google stuff like reminders. You can use the Gmail app at the same time if you want. And when one gets dropped you'll already have a backup plan!

All my issues with wrong emails were just annoying or funny until someone tried to sign up for an AshleyMadison account with mine. I didn't think anything of it until a few months later they got hacked and my email ended up in a database of known-users. I got to have a nice awkward conversation with my wife after that.

It's got shake, proximity, and volume key settings. The dev is super responsive, I'm certain they'd implement it if you suggested it (which you can do from within the app). Hell, they reply to EVERY Play Store review.

Edit: After a shower I realized I'm an idiot. Yes, they have flip to snooze/dismiss, that's what the proximity sensor is for.

Yep, found it in the settings.

After playing around with it a bit I think I'm sticking with Timely though. I like material design and all but I have no use for like, half the features. I've been noticing my app preferences shifting in this direction for a while now, I used to love apps with tons of customization but I noticed that most of the time I barely use any of them. If I were still using the stock clock app I'd probably be all over this though. It's a hell of an app, just not for me I guess.

Also creating a new alarm or timer in Timely feels slick and I like it better than material design.

Have you figured out where the supposed ads are in AMDroid? I didn't notice any when I was setting up my recurring alarm. Is it going to start blaring Game of War ads at me every time I snooze my alarm?

I made a quick 10 second countdown alarm to see what the interface looked like in practice and after I dismissed it there was a full screen ad.

I just set up netguard after seeing it recommended in this thread so it appeared as a blank screen with an x in the top left, but yeah. I'd go ahead and pay to remove them if I were going to use it.

My dad got sent the risk assessment, travel and security plans for an upcoming CBS News trip to Yemen as part of a mailing to the reporting team and various CBS bigwigs. His email address is one letter different to that of the freelance cameraman on the trip. He replied to the original sender and got a lovely - and somewhat relieved - reply back thanking him. The documents were a fascinating read...

Yeah I hadn't seen any either but like Wrist Watch said I was just going to pay anyway. The reviews mention full screen on dismiss so again WW seems to be correct.

Also I tend to agree in principle that apps should have as few options as possible (I wrote in the Something app). My only problem with Timely is that Holo has really poorly in my eyes. That and I really like things which work with Wear. Oh yeah and one thing I really missed from Gentle Alarm was the ability to skip the next instance of a recurring alarm. Okay, I guess I had a few problems with Timely...

If you use the github version of Netguard you can adblock at the DNS level. There's also DNS66 which does the same thing in a smaller, simpler package. I tried out DNS66 for a little bit a while back and while it worked as intended, there was one Android bug that couldn't be worked around (downloads fail to initialize) and it all just felt too much like rooting for me to continue with.

At least the github NetGuard app does contain its own updater so it probably feels a bit more ready-to-use from that perspective. I didn't bother to try it though because I was scared off by the number of "Battery killer!" reports I read.

I've found no battery hit from netguard. Also no problems with downloads.

But then again I always have over 50% left on my 6P at the end of the day, so I wouldn't really notice a hit.

He explained in the issue in detail someplace I cannot find now (of course) but the gist of it was that it was specific to the way DNS66 did things as opposed to Opera and NetGuard's implementation. I was already getting annoyed with it at that point and will admit to probably not devoting the amount of attention I should have.

My reason for including it in the post was to mention my distaste for DNS66 in my use, not to knock NetGuard which seems okay.
