If martial application doesn't matter to me and I'm not interested in more grappling-oriented stuff, what could I do competitively? Karate's apparently going to be in the 2020 Olympics; would it be a good idea?

If you're going to compete, it really needs martial application. If boxing/muai thai don't appeal to you, maybe check out fencing?

Karate can be ok, and it contains good techniques, but stay away from anything that has any kind of woo and watch out for instructors that advertise high degrees of black belt (above 5), especially if they're pot bellied older white guys, as that's McDojo warning flag #1 (#2 is all financial stuff like a lack of free trial, long contract obligations, and testing fees.) When people ask my about Karate I warn them to avoid anything that's not JKA Shotokan, Kyokushin, or maybe Issin Ryu, too, at least without any kind of solid research into the specific dojo. Karate weapon training also has the side effect of making you look like a weeaboo goober.

Most of what I say about Karate applies to TKD, too. Look for WTF dojos if that's what you want to try.

For any traditional martial art, also watch out for any kind of insecurity towards MMA training - "better than that MMA stuff, grappling is no good because we'd just knock him out on the way in blah blah." Avoid anyone who is like that.

If you want to compete regularly, boxing is kind of tough because of what's involved in setting up fights even as an amateur. I'd say karate (kyokushin or shotokan) is probably a better bet, since competitions are divided by belt rank.

That reminds me, I have a Capoeira horror story.

So my wife's little brother is in his early 20s, and he's been doing Capoeira since he was about 5 years old. He thought Eddie Gordo was really cool in Tekken 3 so he hassled his parents until they signed him up. Maybe two years ago, his parents (my inlaws) signed up. They had four kids, starting really young, and now that they're all grown up, they have nothing else to do. I don't think they've ever had a proper hobby before, and they're both about 50. The mother is okay, because she just enjoys doing some fun exercise and hanging out with her kid.

The dad, though. He's a fun guy to be around most of the time, but he's one of those people where you put him in a competitive sport and sudden realise that he's got issues. Very competitive, can't manage his anger, and he's always been bad at both teaching and learning. He tried to teach all four of his kids to drive and scared them all away from driving for life because A: he drives like a maniac and B: he gets angry at the learner for not knowing things that he hasn't taught. He's the kind of guy who got to where he is in life by staying up all night working, except that if he managed his time better and was a bit more thoughtful with his approach to things, he wouldn't need to pull those all-nighters. You know that Abraham Lincoln quote "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe"? He doesn't heed that, and he really should.

So the parents are both pretty hopeless at capoeira, but the mum doesn't care. They start to get deeply involved in the local community on an organisational level, they help set up events, they cook for visiting Brazilian coaches, they drive gear around, that kind of thing. They seem to keep getting belts or ropes or whatever for community engagement rather than skill. Because they've never had a real hobby before, they're way too into it. They're both learning Portuguese so they can visit Brazil, which they're convinced is some kind of shiny promised land where everybody is happy. Their eyes glaze over and they say things like "Brazilians are such happy people! They're all just so lovely!". My wife says "Mum, the reason they're smiling is because they got to leave Brazil." and they just laugh it off. For about a year now it's been impossible to have a conversation with them that doesn't somehow turn to capoeira, and then they start going on huge tangents about it, and nobody cares! It's frustrating trying to constantly steer conversations away from it.

So the dad, who also isn't very good at it, is simultaneously having some kind of weird mid-life crisis because they've just become grandparents, and is on a fitness binge, which is cool. But he kind of ignores his instructors when they try to correct his movements, and he just kind of channels his rage into trying to 'do the move right', and he makes himself angry when it doesn't work. But he especially can't stand to receive any kind of instruction from his son, who is probably the best capoerista in the country at his age (my brother-in-law). He's been groomed to be a teacher for a long time. It got so bad that he shouted at his son to 'gently caress off' because he didn't like the 'tone' he took when he was giving tips to his mother at training. So the son (who is pretty cool about capoeira, he has a life and he never talks about it unless you express an interest in it) now doesn't want to go to training anymore because his parents have infiltrated it and turned it into a weird and hostile environment for him. They say things like "he hasn't been at training lately. It's like his heart's not in it. He's disrespecting our group!". The head instructor of the group seems like a pretty chill guy, and not culty. But the parents have started to create a culty atmosphere all by themselves. It's so weird.

So about a month ago he moved to another city for work where he's immediately found a new gym, become best friends with everyone, taken over teaching all the beginner classes, and is apparently loving training again. And he hates talking about capoeira just as much of the rest of us, now. He said he was considering taking up BJJ on the side just because it would annoy his parents.

Drill drill drill. Leg pummelling, flow drills, and the ashi killer toe hold.

This may have been posted here already, but this is a good overview of all of the major leg positions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWrEk9MbvUc

When we do leg day we do flow drills such as ashi -> outside -> Russian cowboy (saddle) -> honey hole -> reaper (game over) -> outside -> ashi. When our instructor is feeling cheeky, he'll tell us to take the ashi killer if our opponent gives it to us, and that goes a long way to improving our positional technique. This drill is good both for improving your offensive technique and your escapes, because it gives you a sense of the rhythm of the positions.

That was the nastiest break I've witnessed live at an MMA event. What a warrior that dude is to be smiling on the way out of the cage. Hats off to him.

coach that wasn't there: Let me guess he was pretty laid-back about it
coach that was there: Totally fine

I see one post saying it was one of the worst breaks he's seen then another one saying Darlok was smiling on the way out. That sounds about right.
