Genre labels can be a bit dodgy, but there seems to be a void we could fill with this thread. With hard rock! Since not much hard rockin' gets posted in the indie rock/pop/folk/electronic thread, and if it's not certified steel it doesn't get posted much in the metal thread. There is that bit of heavy metal / hard rock overlap, especially glam metal, and there's even some with alt rock. Who knows, but the magic could be this thread doesn't have the strictest of requirements. If it's rock 'n' fuckin' roll as Lemmy often said, put it in here. If it's more headbang worthy than your standard rock fare, maybe just a bit crunchy, lets hear about it! One of the greats is Electric Six. They're often danceable, but the crowd does become a mosh whenever that hard surf guitar hits in Gay Bar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HSwfS_dk2Y Here's the latest single from Turbonegro, originally full on punk, now with more of a hard glam rock style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_GQK_eCNf8 Symphonic metal (aka radio friendly heavy metal with female vocalists) is not seen much in the metal thread, could have a haven in here. Within Temptation for example. Or maybe something like Rage Against The Machine, something retro like Aldo Nova, whatever rocks! I didn't notice a J-rock thread in here, so here's some Gackt! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXp0v93ZRTs If you have hard rock to post and it needs a home, here's a place to put it. Or there could be a... skyfall?

Good stuff! Rock and even some metal could be posted about in here, since yeah hard rock is a somewhat broad/undefined area. On wikipedia, a lot of bands will have several genres listed, hard rock is often one of the middle ones. Motley Crue is listed as heavy metal / hard rock / glam metal. Electric Six is listed as alt rock / dance rock / new wave / hard rock on there, etc. There is a lot of rock music that is not hard or heavy for the most part, I guess a lot of the bands in the indie thread for example. The bands that sound more pondering or sad or something like that. But yeah I think just "rock 'n' roll" would often be classified as hard rock these days, by sounding energetic and well, rockin'. Since we don't have a rock 'n' roll thread here either, that stuff could go here too. Just an overall common ground of hard rockin'. To encourage posting of bands that don't seem to fit in with the other threads. Heavy Metal fucked around with this message at 18:54 on May 18, 2017 |

I'm glad someone finally made this thread. Most of what I listen to is pretty much mainstream hard rock that you'd find on SiriusXM Octane and gets poo poo on by most people on the forum so I'm curious to see what you guys can open my ears to.

On the classification thing, while it's interesting, you can post whatever you think fits. There isn't a general rock topic to post in, so even if something is considered by some not hard rock enough, it's all good, if you think it fits post away. And on the other end, hard rock that may be metal, that's okay too. We have several metal topics (stoner, black, etc), metal that is hard rock-ish isn't posted about much in the general metal topic as is. Except for some 80s classics. This thread is between a rock and a hard place. It's a hard rock place, fill it with your rocks or metallic-ish deposits that are maybe too glossy for a metal thread, and a rock that is perhaps too rough for say the indie thread, anyways it's all just descendants of rock'n'roll. This song seems appropriate, What is Rock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSfo0Jr0O_s Heavy Metal fucked around with this message at 00:31 on May 20, 2017 |

I don't really understand what the confusion is. Rock music is almost everything featuring a guitar from the 1950s onwards, whereas hard rock is a specific style of rock. like your led zeppelins or your acdcs or whatever.

So is this a thread for modern hard rock or what? Because "hard rock" encompasses a good 50 year swath of music and I don't think E6 and Gackt are exactly representative of that.

Shark Sandwich posted:So is this a thread for modern hard rock or what? Because "hard rock" encompasses a good 50 year swath of music and I don't think E6 and Gackt are exactly representative of that. The thing is, seems very few bands identify as hard rock as the main thing, there are countless subgenres made for every kind of band. But a lot of them will have hard rock listed among several subgenres on their wiki page, or you might just determine that yep this band rocks hard. You can be a hard rock band while also being dance rock and alt rock, like Electric Six. The J-rock scene, especially visual kei (another name for glam metal kinda) is often hard rock, so Gackt fits too. There are bands that could be called just hard rock, like Guns N Roses or Aerosmith, but this thread isn't intended to be limited to just those bands. Since by now there are many many ways you could categorize bands, but these different sounding bands may all have some hard rock in their formula as well. Could post some older bands if you'd like, overall the idea is if somebody wants to bring a band to people's attention, in case somebody hasn't heard it, post it in here. If you consider it to be rock that is hard, to your standards, post away. So for this hard rock thread, it's up to the poster to just post what they think fits. Since this area is a little less easily defined than say what to post in the New Retro Wave thread. And the idea is this could be a place that fills a few gaps in what gets posted in this subforum overall, with sort of a common thing to it. I could call it the Hard Rock / Harder than average modern Alt Rock / J-Rock / Rage Against The Machine style funk metal / Glam metal / Poppy hair metal / Groovin rock thread also. Or home for rock without a home that is possibly hard. I don't have a short answer for this question it would seem. Short version, post bands you think could be considered hard rock, even if that band is hard rock mixed with other subgenres. Heavy Metal fucked around with this message at 02:19 on May 21, 2017 |

for a band to qualify as hard rock they need to meet the minimum butt threshold of 17% anything over 65% butt is butt rock, which obviously is a subset of hard rock, but at or above 17% butt it is quantifiable as hard rock as per ISO-9001 regs

He himself chose not to label his band with a subgenre, even though some albums are full on metal, etc. It's rock 'n' roll to Lemmy, even though it's much heavier than just about any other rock band. The other band you mention, seems they're on the not so heavy side of alt rock (being your point), post what your heart tells you. I think, frankly, that we all probably already know enough about Hard Rock, thank you, and that you should use this thread to educate us all about your Lemmy Is Still Alive conspiracy theory because really, we could use some better or at least more interesting news. to contribute, I have a friend in LA who named her dog after Lemmy, and its a good dog and the name could have created an opportunity for some soul transfer, but I don't think Lemmy (the spirit) was interested, dog is still the same old doggo.
