I'm not 100 percent clear on what pbta is but I much prefer the skeleton dnd to it. There's no game mechanics really, just some half assed make-um-ups with pretty irrelevant dice throws. Just make it a long form improv exercise at this point. Is the full version focused even more on rewarding character work? Because that would suck. The more they force this sincere background stuff the less jokes are in it. The shows starting to feel like a chore. I mean I guess they should keep doing this way because it's wildly popular and people keep saying they're tearing up at points. I just don't care about the emotional journey of Barry loving Bluejeans as much as a bunch of other people I guess

You wouldn't know if you preferred it because this isn't really a proper PbtA. This is even more a skeleton of a PbtA system than the skeleton of D&D they were using. Full systems actually have proper moves to make, so there's a lot more structure to it. And like I said earlier, it rewards the characters interacting with each other, which is what Tres Horny Boys do best.

Reprint the TAZ graphic novel, but replace all instances of Taako/Merle/Magnus with three copies of Todd Coolbody

It's almost like a bunch of Internet sads found a media creator that was just woke enough that they could be easily guilted into changing their goofy joke show into SERIOUS REPRESENTATIONAL FIC and then complained when three white dudes didn't do a queer latinx character exactly like they wanted. This whole thing is extremely dumb. Twitter is a cancer.

I think it's pretty loving gross that an incredibly vocal minority of the TAZ fandom went "They ruined my boner for the magic gay fake wizard, so now the correct response is to, clearly, try to deprive an actual living breathing gay person of her livelihood."

The audience rushes the stage at the next TAZ live show, throwing stones at the McElroys for daring to cast Clint McElroy, noted white man, in the role of PoC character Merle Highchurch. They're only spared from death when someone notices that if you squint at one of the rocks it kind of looks like a face with a big nose and the crowd instead destroys all stonework for being inherently antisemitic. Taako becomes half latino and half blue, the fandom destroys itself deciding which half is which.

Let's get moving North!! *Checks another room, finds a gun, switches out inventory, applies mods to gun, loads ammo, switches back to other gun* Oh man we're not going to make it! *Takes pot shots at enemy a kilometer away* *Dies outside the play zone* Truly awful squad.

Drunkboxer posted:Because I like jokes Normal pbta, and it would be dungeon world for this kind of game probably, isn't really so different in terms of what it'll take you through than a dnd game. What it brings to the table is player flexibility and speed - what it sacrifices is mechanical detail and endless spell lists. Pbta has no turns. No player order. You truck through and when it seems appropriate for someone to be the focus, they say what they are doing. Just like what the boys do now outside of combat, except it applies to fights as well. What this means is fights are fun. Badguys dont roll dice. You don't get the massive slowdown of rolling initiative, and going round the 10 goblins rolling to see what they do. The players say what they do and then if it seems necessary you see which of the set moves seems appropriate. Failure doesn't mean your whole turn amounts to nothing. You'll get a weird twist, or punched. You don't get any dead rolls. Fights always drag on forever in TAZ normally, listen to friends at the table or some other pbta podcast and see how the fights remain quick and freeform. It'll suit the boys to a tee.

I watch battlegrounds streams to see the awful people achieve victory by sheer luck and then spend the rest of their time playing trying to replicate all the variables to reenact that same scenario. Worst Battlegrounds stream is the the people who are good at the game because they will invariably start talking poo poo AT the game for being a buggy mess or getting mad at enemy players for doing unpredictable poo poo like a poker player gets mad at people not doing pot valuation betting or some poo poo.

Ultimately its why I think "there are no canon representations of these characters!" is a bad move to hold onto when you start producing merchandise of them yourselves because you just told everyone their interpretation actually just isn't as valid as the actual material you're printing and charging real american dollars regardless of your actual words People are going to be introduced to TAZ with those designs. It may not be "canon" but its what everyone is going to think of and I think it would be slightly better if they just ripped the band-aid off, or at least actually described appearances from the start for their characters in every game from now on. Not that I'm blaming the McElroys or implying this situation is their fault or in any way deserved, especially since the "no canon" measure was enacted to stop artists from being bullied for drawing the characters "wrong" (more hot fandom bullshit there) but its clear its doing more harm to them and Carey at this point than good.

I can empathise with people who want representation, but TAZ just can't really be the platform for that. Taako can't be Latinx or Mexican because it exists in a world without Latin America or Mexico. It'd be like mentioning that Obi Wan Kenobi was from France. It just doesn't make sense. My headcanon: Magnus is Jimmy Smitts, Merle is Jimmy Buffett. well why not fucked around with this message at 14:29 on Jun 5, 2017 |
