TooMuchAbstraction posted:Tooting my own horn, but for those that can't be arsed to play it, I did LPs of Angband and ToME 2. The ToME 2 run is pretty twinkish and more focused on seeing the sights (including a visit to the Void, the bonus postgame dungeon), while the Angband LPs are just straight-up dungeon diving. doubletoot, especially the tome2 run because that game's stupid and fun to read about. i just wish i had more fun trying to actually play it.

They seem like maybe you're supposed to spec them into defense spellcasters who use things like poison / shields, but that archetype seems bad because there are just too many enemies you need to burst down quickly. Maybe this is just me being generally bad at spells talking, though - my only Wizard win was basically going pure electricity thindeck which seems like the most brainless way to use spells.

idiotmeat posted:I'm trying to get into ToME. What is a good class to start with? Try them all, it's not like any of them are going to live very long. I would avoid Summoners because they're an exercise in tedium, and generally speaking all of the classes that start out unlocked when you first play the game are "newbie" classes with very linear gameplay and few advanced options, which makes them kind of dull to play once you get a handle on it. This is less and less true as more of them get reworked, though. (Archers, for instance, are much improved from what they used to be.)

Zeerust posted:Oh, no, yeah, I meant TOME4. I've goofed around extremely briefly with Python and C# when I took a look at Unity a while back, but being able to see and get my hands into the meat of a game that actually exists instead of trying to build something from scratch feels like it might make more sense. Lua itself is a pretty friendly language; as a newbie it's not a bad choice, and an experienced programmer can read the entire language spec in an afternoon and come away with a good sense of how to use it. TOME4 itself, however, is pretty complicated. Definitely start out by changing small things rather than, say, trying to implement a new class from scratch. Benly posted:I remember Hengband being way better than animeband, although I don't know if it's still being maintained. It was a ZAngband-derived variant made by a Japanese dude and slightly shakily translated, with piles of anime and video game crap loaded in. It also had piles of new mechanics and absolutely awful game balance, but in the fun "everything is exploding" kind of way. So it's the SLASH'EM of Angband? Helical Nightmares posted:Even better Roguelike tutorial! This reminds me, I have shamefully entirely stopped work on ttymor. I got bogged down trying to port it to lanterna/squidlib, then burned out on non-work programming entirely for a while, and now I've gotten sidetracked writing a new language instead. I should get back into it next time I feel like merely playing roguelikes isn't masochistic enough.

As far as I know it's still the app, which is okay with me since I only have a Kindle Fire, which is technically incompatible with Play but can run Humble's app if installed directly.

Hah! I'm not really expecting this to be useful to anyone but me; I wanted to get feet-wet with Forth and I figured that getting it running on an arduino I had lying around would be a fun way to do so. Turns out that it's probably easier, and definitely more fun, to write one from scratch than to get an existing one to load and run on it. Although it's wandered a bit far from my original intent and now handles like a bastard hybrid of forth and postscript.

We Slay Monsters has finally made it to v1.0 after a rather lengthy Early Access jaunt http://weslaymonsters.com/ Shorter form, high replay fare---but I reckon the card wrangling mechanics just might carry it to good places as a twist on the usual. Axu also returns with a shiny v0.5.0 after the dev needed a bit of a recharge: https://cynapse077.itch.io/axu-rl

Thea's combat wasn't that hard to figure out when I played it. I don't remember it well enough to explain it but I don't remember being particularly flummoxed by it.

Thea's battles are fairly straight forward. What I always found inscrutable was the fact that different challenge types put the same characters in battle with different attributes that are determined by other attributes without much explanation of what contributes to what. It's a fun game nonetheless, get it if it's on sale (or even if it isn't, 20 bucks isn't overcharging for what you get).

deathstate is great and goon made. its a single stick shooter where you automatically fire on the closest enemy and can focus more on dodging around. and it's got itemization in the same vein as boi more or less. plus a couple different characters that play a little differently.

lordfrikk posted:So Cryptark just released. Any opinions regarding the current version? It is a pretty good action roguelight with some tactical choices - specifically in how you approach each Ark, in terms of targetting their components, such as disabling the turret system or factories to reduce the opposition. It can get pretty hectic, specially on missions with factories where taking your time will result in huge swarms of enemies. The current version feels somewhat easier than it was in Early Access, but the game is pretty challenging still. There's a good variety of gameplay between the different suits and the load-outs you can bring and it has two main modes: Campaign, where you have to manage the cost of your load-outs with the loot from the Arks through a series of missions, and Rogue, where there's no resource management and you pick equipment on the field. Rogue is actually easier as there are no cost-concerns and being capable of just equipping a weapon or item you found is a huge advantage most of the time, even if you only get one life. Additional challenges are provided in the form of special objectives (like doing a mission under a certain budget or ignoring a specific component) that unlock artefacts which you use to unlock other suits or paint-jobs. There's also a special mini-mode after you complete at least one run of both Rogue and Campaign, where you fight a different type of enemy than the aliens in the main game, your contractors, specifically. Two advices I'd give for someone picking up the game is to use your shield as often as you can and to note that the timer on the campaign is just a prize modifier, not a fail state.

I picked it up in early access and am kinda surprised it's only just now released, it was basically done ages ago. It's currently got one or two cosmetic bugs that weren't there 6 months ago, but seeing how it's gotten about 5 patches in the first day of release I'm sure they'll be gone very soon. Solid polish, game that plays out exactly as it says on the tin, decent replay value, easily worth the purchase price.
