In my very limited experience, all the releases with x265/HEVC are at best same quality as x264 with smaller file size. I'm excluding these releases because I don't care so much about the file size, but one of my Kodi machines chokes on HEVC.

So, my question is...am I missing out on any releases or groups doing releases that are actually better quality?

I did a scene comparison between two 720p videos, one x264 (800MB I think, possibly 1GB) and one x265/HEVC (300MB or so). The HEVC was noticeably worse as the actor's skin lost all pores, but this was on a still frame. I'm not sure I'd notice the difference in motion but I've not bothered getting HEVC since. My connection is fast enough and I get enough quota per month to not care about the smaller size if the quality is worse.

Cool, I didnt know about Radarr. does it work better than couch potato (as in, if I tell it to grab a HD copy of something that isnt yet released, it wont just grab a TS/screener the second I add it to the wanted list?)

Works so much better for me. You can also set when you want it to look, and the qualities have been spot on for me. (things like web never worked right on couch potato)

Chiming in to agree with everyone else. Sonarr/Radarr are both excellent.

Also if you use NZBHydra you can group all of your Usenet indexers in one place and reference it from both programs.

I only have two indexers setup in Radarr and Sonarr. NZBHydra(for NZBs), Jackett(for torrents).

Anyone still use sickbeard??

I finally shitcanned Sickbeard just this morning and moved to Sonarr. It's way, way easier to set up than the last time I tried it, which was a really long time ago. The only thing I wasn't impressed by is the fact that there doesn't seem to be a bulk import option for existing series, but the fourth reply on this page has a command you can paste into the browser's developer console and it automagically clicks all the "add" buttons. Worked like a champ. It's also entirely possible that I didn't see the bulk add command if it exists, so maybe someone else can chime in on that.

What I like so far is that it's already finding backlogged stuff that Sickbeard seems to have been ignoring forever. You also don't need to set up a post-processing script if you use SABnzbd - it literally "just works" after you plug in your SAB api info. I'm pretty pleased with how easy it was to get going and how well it seems to be working already.

"Series -> Add Series -> Import Existing Series On Disk" should be what you are looking for

You have to start creating one series manually first just to create the root directory I think, but after that's set you can cancel out and then import them. I might be mistaken.

Acid Reflux
Oct 18, 2004

It didn't have any trouble finding all of my existing stuff when I pointed it at my shows directory, but I was left with a list of 80+ series that all had individual "Add" buttons next to them. Didn't seem to be a way to just "select all" from there, which is where that little developer command came in. In any case, it's all perfect now, so even if I went around it the long way it did the trick. :)

I also just watched it handle a failed download and I think I'm in love.

I will be setting up Sonarr in the next day or two as I fixed my MacOS issue (somehow nuked my bash terminal commands and couldnt enable hidden files) so I can now go and erase my old Sonarr DB and create a new one.

the issue I had with Sonarr years ago was it would add the nzbs to SAB+ fine but wouldnt post process them at all, whereas Sickbeard did that without any tweaking.

I mean I guess I dont have a choice really. looking further into sickrage it seems impossible to have it use my existing collection and storage location on the NAS Because its essentially sandboxed on my NAS if installed as an app. oh well.

Is that with Docker or some other container solution? I've been running sickrage in a container for the last couple of years, continuing off from my old sickbeard database. It's probably just a matter of figuring out the settings.

Although if you have Docker on the NAS you would be able to easily install Sonarr and whatever else you'd want as long as the system has enough RAM.

Laserface
Dec 24, 2004

It was because sick rage sees the root of the NAS volume and not just the shares like my Mac does so I didn't think the totally obvious DATA directory was where they all lived :downs:

I have sickrage running on my NAS now :)

Just need to trim the fat from the db and tweak the download settings and configure growl/prowl and I'm done.

Next question

Nzbget: better than sab?

If I can move to that rather painlessly, my entire media operation is then NAS based.

For me, NZBGet was always a 'maybe not worth pulling your system apart to install it and configure it with everything else, but I'm glad I used it on a fresh install'. I haven't used SAB in a good few years now, and don't believe I'm missing anything (and there's quite a nice client for Get on the iPhone now too).

I've been using usenet.farm for a little over 2 years, I've got 2TB of downloads on a block account and over the course of the 2 years, I've spent roughly $90. That works out to about $3/month, plus the 2TB I have left will last me 5 months. So it's a bit more like $2.50/month. I basically only buy blocks during their sales, so even the block costs are reduced. I would honestly never go back to a monthly subscription at this point.

Chrome recently introduced a security measure related to including username/password in URLS and I think that messed up stuff up for nzbget.

When I launch from the chrome extension I get that broken page. I then press ctrl-r to refresh and get the unbroken nzbget page...

If you take out the username and password in the extension's settings you should be good. You'll need to add your IP to Authorized IP under Security settings if it's not already there.

Is there a simple "click this button" to have SABNZDB rename files to match the folder name? I often see obfuscated filenames, but the parent folder is fine so I just manually rename them to match. If SAB did this itself I'd be pretty happy, though. If it's possible, I'm hoping it isn't something that requires me to set some flag on every NZB in the queue that I download.

Sickbeard is dead. The project lead hosed off. Sonarr is the common accepted replacement. Sickrage is just a fork of Sickbeard. Radarr is the movie variant of Sonarr and is under heavy development though is totally functional at this point. Sonarr apparently is modular enough that you can plug in various types of data into it. Radarr just being the most notable example. I've seen test builds for books, music and one guy made one for porn somehow.

I tried making the switch to Sonarr a year or so ago but had difficulties in configuraing the post processing with SABnzbd. Is it easier to switch over now?
